Album of the Week:
2muchachos : Formanta
The album title, ‘Formanta’, comes from the Latin formatio (formation) & is also the name of a 70s soviet vintage synthesizer. The record has elements of electronica, folktronica, shoegaze & ambient & each track washes you gently with lush deep, warm beautiful sounds that recall the likes of Ulrich Schnauss & Isan. As the instrumental explorations progress, the Russian trio find themselves carefully crafting an ambience that brings their sound closer to the realm of Sigur Ros’ slow-core – although this is far more subdued & delicate – & their mastery of pastoral bliss has more in common with those other Icelanders, Mum. Apparently, Radiohead’s ‘Kid A’ & Portishead’s ‘Third’ albums have also been a major inspiration for this album & that is certainly apparent here too. There are lots of ambient hissing noises, crackles, unidentifiable percussion, droning organs, hushed echoing vocals & some really awesome glitchy idm that make up this rather wonderful release. Highly recommended. Parallax
Single of the Week :
Deerhunter : Revival / Primitive 3D
(Very limited 7”, available in selected shops only) ‘Revival’, the 1st track to be taken from the forthcoming ‘Halcyon Digest’ album, is every bit as incredible as you’d hope from the incomparable Atlanta quartet, proving that there is simply no end to Bradford Cox & co.’s awesomeness! Our only gripe is that it’s just too damn short. Oh well, can always play it again or flip over to the driving garage rhythm of the B-side that ends on bird coos & music box twinkles. Whoah! “On ‘Revival’, the band finds another well of influence to draw from : themselves” – Pitchfork, “A woozy, swaying will-o’-the-wisp of a track with a sweet breeders-ish menace, a ghostly banjo & eerie death rattles” – NME. 4ad
Hi!
A fair few pretty fine looking new releases to light up your life with this week. Apart from the album of the week from 2muchachos, we also have releases from… Antony & The Johnsons, who give us a teaser of their forthcoming album with the ‘Thank You for Your Love’ EP… Everything Everything, whose eagerly awaited debut of furiously paced electro-pop definitely doesn’t disappoint… Magic Kids bring pure sunshine pop on ‘Memphis’, a marvellous sun-kissed update of 50s doo-wop and 60s sunshine pop… Neon Indian’s ‘Psychic Chasms’ finally gets a UK release, and we have it a few weeks upfront to boot! Fans of Toro Y Moi & Washed Out should definitely check this one out… ‘Kompakt Total 11‘ is the latest instalment of the annual series, and as always it demonstrates just how ahead of everyone else this label constantly is… S Carey has finally gotten fed up of being in the shadow of a certain Mr. Vernon as part of Bon Iver’s backing band and has struck out on his own with the wonderfully understated ‘All We Grow’… Shed follows up 2008’s very highly rated ‘Shedding The Past’ with ‘The Traveller’, an album of shifting melodies and moods which constantly keeps you on your toes… Light in the Attic reissue ‘Like a Ship Without A Sail’ by Pastor T.L. Barrett & The Youth for Christ Choir, which is a bona fide lost classic of gospel soul… Philip Selway (yes, him who bangs the drums for Radiohead) brings us his fragile, haunting & heartfelt solo debut… Ex-Pipette Rose Elinor Dougall gives us a solo debut of smart, sophisticated indie-pop… Crippled Black Phoenix return with another sinister amble through post-rock, folk, prog, ambient and doom-metal… the legendary Richard Thompson returns with a magnificent collection of 13 new songs… Dungen bring us another album of gorgeous dreamlike melodies, psychedelic stonkers & graceful, jazz-filled polyrhythms… All of this and great new albums from the likes of Chilly Gonzales, C.W. Stoneking, Kano, Pale Sketcher, David Dondero, Fan Death, Surgeon (Fabric 53), Burn The Negative, Madlib (Medicine Show #8), Cheikh Lo and many more! Singleswise, in addition to the return of Deerhunter and their single of the week ‘Revival’, we have fantastic releases from No Age, Oneohtrix Point Never (featuring Antony & Fennesz), Dan Michaelson (limited to 100 and hand numbered!), Ducktails and The Cribs to name but a few. As always, click the link below for a full list of this week’s new releases.

Album of the Week :
Women : Public Strain (Jagjaguwar)
The 1st handful of copies come with an extremely limited (100 only), indies only 7″ featuring 2 exclusive tracks so don’t hang about! Women follow up their stunning debut with an album that could prove to be a contender in the 2010 end of year lists. These are 11 dense tracks of reverb drenched sonics & layers, with a melodic sensibility that creep up & grab you like virtually nothing else youll hear this year. The balance of delicate & dense is a pervasive thread throughout the album & the record is by turns claustrophobic & euphoric. Sure to be one for fans of Atlas Sound, Real Estate & Beach Fossils.
Single of the Week :
The Strange Death of Liberal England : Rising Sea (The Strange Death of Liberal England)
(incredibly packaged white label 7″, individually signed & numbered, tied inside a The Strange Death of Liberal England flag with a button badge!) ‘Rising Sea’ is one of the standout tracks from their incredible forthcoming album that incorporates the massed presence of the Richard P Horn Youth Orchestra alongside the band, creating a new take on orchestral pop. They’re now sounding even bigger than Arcade Fire themselves & the single more than lives up to the package it arrives in!

Hello Everyone!
We’ve finally finished our shop move around which has made space for our lovely new expanded vinyl racking (a customer told us this morning that he’s no longer afraid of the vinyl section as it is now possible to browse without getting stressed out – so spread the word!). The “Change From A Fiver” section is now at the other end of the run at the back of the shop, DVDs are on the wall above the counter & Mags/Fanzines/Books are on the counter. I’ve still got a bit of painting to do but we’re nearly there……..
We’ve got a splendid set of releases instore for you this week to liven up these miserable, wet “summer” days. (Chk Chk Chk) are back with their distinct brand of dance-funk-punk – a texturally rich record filled with deep, galvanising grooves……..the worthily-hyped Tame Impala record finally gets an official UK release – fuzzy Flaming Lips / Beatles / Love -like swirling psych………the mega-prolific Eels deliver the last record of their trilogy – 3 records in 14 months but not even the slightest sign of a drop in quality – what a treat! Album of the Week :
High Wolf : Shangri L.A. (moamoo / art union)
High Wolf is a mysterious Amazonian-French loop enthusiast who conjures mystic tropical clouds of repetition that, while complex, are never hard to listen to. This is a potent form of psychedelic music that dwells in the cosmos of kosmiche & drone alongside peers James Ferraro, Spencer Clarke & Oneohtrix Point Never. The wolfs narcotically affecting tracks utilize table loops & field recordings collected on a month long trip to india to create swelling, chiming & subtly fluctuating primal drone-scapes that suck you in & refuse to let go until the very final fading seconds. If the likes of Lucky Dragons, Growing, OPN, Gang Gang Dance or Sun Araw excite, then you simply wont go wrong with these 44 minutes of outer-limit transcendence.
Single of the Week :
Forest Swords : Rattling Cage (No Pain In Pop)
(limited 7″) Liverpool’s Forest Swords return with their debut release on the ace No Pain In Pop label. Managing to mix Burial’s sample strewn claustrophobia with twisted r’n'b swing & organic swamp grooves, this is 2 tracks of perfectly executed skeletal pop. for fans of James Ferraro, Pocahaunted & Rangers.
Forthcoming Instore :
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. – Monday 13th September @ 7pm (ticket holders only)
To launch his 3rd album (released on the day of the instore), Sam Duckworth has asked to come back to Resident to play his only Brighton show as he’s loved playing so much here in the past. He’s always been a real treat to see in this intimate environment & he’ll charm the pants off you, so ask instore to find out how to get your hands on a pair of free tickets to the show.
Hello & welcome!
Well the weather might have turned on us somewhat but on a positive note just look at it as the perfect excuse to pick up one of the many great records out this week & spend a cosy afternoon indoors with some good new music to watch the rain with. Before I press on we’d just like to thank those of you who came down to our new Resident-cy night at the Fitzherberts – drinks were drunk, a multitude of different discs were spun & we all had a great time! We’ll be sure to let you know when the next one is, as they say, ‘watch this space’.
Vying for your attention this week we have the heavy tropical lysergic trip of a record from the mysterious High Wolf, our album of the week (more about that above). Also this week the unlikely partnership of Isobell Campbell & Mark Lanegan return with what is undoubtedly their most accomplished effort yet; an expansive record that covers blues, country, gospel, dream-pop & a fair spoonful of southern soul…. Animal Collective fry minds everywhere with their new ‘Oddsac’ dvd – hailed as a visual album it represents a new synthesis of music & film & features an original score with new songs from the band & complex digital manipulation by director Danny Perez…. Alasdair Roberts brings us his idiosyncratic take on traditional folk ballads on his amazing new record…. Matthew Dear follows up his brilliant ‘Asa Breed’ album with ‘Black City’ – his darkest & most engrossing hour yet….those who are partial to a bit of drone & dark ambient will be pleased to hear the 3 seminal albums by Thomas Koner have been issued in a 3cd collection – these records are rightly considered as classics of the genre….modern-classical composer Goldmund has made another album of beautiful piano pieces that echo Erik Satie & Harold Budd….if you like the wide-open ambience of Eno, Fennesz or early Sigur Ros you really must check out the new record from Moshimoss…. in another unlikely pairing this week Boris teams up with Ian Astbury for a collaboration known as BXI…. Neu! fans rejoice! Neu! ‘86 finally gets a proper CD & vinyl release….the Drum Eyes album is out & it’s a thrilling ride that takes in Krautrock, ambience, alien metal & more…. former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows steps out from behind the kit to bring us his acclaimed new album as I Am Arrows…. Nadja make a brilliant contribution to the Latitudes series….more super-charged drum & bass/rock cross-pollinating on the new Qemists record, as well as
super-tight drum & bass on the new DJ Fresh album….other new releases this week come from Iron Maiden, David Gray, Casiokids, The Domino State & Beautiful South member David Rotheray plus reissues

Album of the Week :
The Books : The Way Out (Temporary Residence ltd.) (cd / 2lp) A 4th record by The Books is way overdue as it has been 5 long years since their absolute classic record ‘Lost & Safe’ (The Wire’s album of the year, no less) but thankfully, it is well worth the wait. Nick Zammuto & Paul de Jong have clearly not been resting on their laurels as this is perhaps their boldest work yet that travels to both extremes of the spectrum they work in – from glitchy sample-delic idm to hushed folk – with calm authority. Whichever end of the spectrum they work at, the results are as bewitching as ever. Highly recommended.
Hello Everyone, Well, it’s been a crazy busy week here but we’ve got just enough energy left to tell you what we’ve been up to & what you can look forward to this week.
First thing to tell you is that at long last, we have found a way to expand & improve our vinyl selection. We know our previous racking was far from ideal but we think you’ll like the new, far more browsable & extended racking. Also, the vinyl is now all together, so you’ll find 12″s, 10″s & 7″s at the end of the albums after the compilations (which are no longer – for the time being at least – in a box on the floor!), down the front of the shop. Just got a bit of painting left to do but we hope you like the improvements.
We may have been busy sorting out our vinyl but we’ve also made time to expand our Change From A Fiver section again to bring you more amazing albums at just £4.99. So, you can now find recent albums from the likes of Hot Chip, Gorillaz, Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Corrine Bailey Rae, Jonsi (of Sigur Ros), Peter Gabriel, 30 Seconds to Mars & more for little more than the price of a pint of beer & a packet of crisps!
Still on the subject of shop improvements, you’ll be glad to know that this week we have welcomed back ex-staffer Ms.Ami Phipps to the Resident fold. It’s great to have the crazy lady back after nearly 1 1/2 years - we’re sure you’ll agree.
So, onto the new releases. As you can see from the top, our pick of the week comes from the sampledelic The Books but there are also cracking albums released this week from the likes of the exhilarating artrockers Menomena who deliver a highly imaginative 4th album……dubstepper Skream looks set to take his sound to a much wider audience with his joyful, energetic sophomore – the limited version comes with an 8 track exclusive Skreamism bonus disc…….PVT (formerly Pivot) prove they have lost none of their pizzazz, inventiveness or driving rhythms, despite losing their vowels……..Leeds trio Sky Larkin are back with album number 2, echoing the likes of The Breeders, Violent Femmes & Yeah Yeah Yeahs……..country songstress Eilen Jewell pays tribute to Loretta Lynn……Analog Africa have out done themselves with their essential new compilation Afro Beat Airways…….the much-lauded & critically acclaimed Caitlin Rose delivers on the promise of her ep with her stunning debut album proper……all this & new releases from Lee Perry & The Upsetters, Norfolk & Western, Silvery, Lost In Trees, D_RRadio, Los Lobos, Rhythms Del Mundo & loads more. Album of the Week :
Shapes & Sizes : Candle To Your Eyes (Asthmatic Kitty)
The 3rd album from Montreals Shapes & Sizes is a flirtation with modern soul, darkness & reverberant space. The 1st album, which initially caught the attention of Asthmatic Kittys Sufjan Stevens, was really just a collection of crafted pop songs. The 2nd was a glorious mess of jagged guitars matched with gentle banjo, as obnoxious as it was sensitive&.& the 3rd? Well, it took long enough to drag out of them but the lengthy incubation period seems to suit the record : the songs are measured, paced. They are neither shouting in your face nor wallowing in their own mood. Theyve delivered a sonically engaging take on modern rock, overspilling with nuanced reverbs & delays that add that little bit more texture than many releases in the field might. A fascinating & thrilling listen that comes highly recommended.
Single of the Week :
Flats : Flats EP (Loog)
(strictly limited 7″) a 5 track ep from the furious, surreal & uncompromising East Londoners. Harnessing unexpected influences – Crass, Ikons, Chronic Gen – to singer Dan Devine’s psychotic anger, Flats are thrilling, unnerving & vital. Their demos have been circulating among such rock royalty names as Kevin Shields, Bobby Gillespie & Jamie Reynolds & one of their early, unmissable live shows was at The Horrors’ Cave Club. Fearless, attention grabbing stuff. Sublimely awkward nme, The return of unpretentious punk Loud & Quiet.
Gig of the Week :
The Hundred In The Hands – Thurs 5th August @ New Hero (note venue change)
The Warp signings were formed from the embers of Boggs. With carefully composed polyrhythms, jagged guitar lines & layered, breathy vocals, the duo keep the raw energy of post-punk illuminating their minds & Studio One boogie-down beats churning in their guts.
Welcome one & all to this week’s update……..
As always, some cracking new releases for you this week. Aside from the awesome aforementioned 3rd album from Shapes & Sizes, there’s the frankly massive new album from Arcade Fire which one reviewer is claiming to be even more impressive than Radiohead’s ‘Ok Computer’! We’re not hearing that in it yet but it’s most definitely not a 3rd album wimp-out. Those of you who pre-ordered the album will have your exclusive, collectible, white label 7″ waiting for you here & we have a very small handful left if you get in early on Monday…………the much hyped Best Coast live up to expectation on their long-awaited debut which bizarrely contains none of the 7″s which caused them to become so talked about in the 1st place but with one winner after another on the album, you won’t even notice – our limited edition version with a bonus track also comes with an exclusive bonus disc & badge if you get in quick……..it might have taken them 6 years to deliver but the 2nd album from Autolux proves to be worth the wait & was only just pipped at the post for album of the week – those fed up with waiting for a new Blonde Redhead album should do themselves a favour & check this out……….Wavves‘ new album of joyous wide-eyed Beach Boys meets Phil Spector -esque pop is another fizzing summer soundtrack………Jayhawk Mark Olson delivers an album of neo-folk that encompasses classic folk & 60’s British folk as well as the “desert country” he’s been associated with………Karine Polwart, King Creosote, Emma Pollock & a bunch of other folkies hook up to make an album of indie-pop & carnival rock together as The Burns Unit……..Toro Y Moi meets Flying Lotus anyone? If it sounds like one for you, check out the fab debut from LA’s Baths…………Madlib’s Medicine Show #7 takes us on a high jazz excursion with his Yesterday’s New Quintet side project……. Detroit’s Jimmy Edgar has made a brilliant album of intergalactic funk for today’s pop tarts……….Chris Coco’s Big Chill debut is an eclectic collection which blends balearic chill, acoustic, classical, beats & electronica to stunning effect……..all this & brand new albums from the likes of Emily Jane White, Nathaniel Rateliff, Christopher Willits, Thieves & Villains & loads more. On the counter, you will also find the new Bill Callahan (Smog) book & edition 9 of our fave journal/mag/cd, Yeti, along with some bargain priced books. To check out the complete listing of new releases this week, click on the link below.
Also worth checking out this week is our ever-improving Change From A Fiver section which now includes the latest albums from Caribou (still comes with an exclusive bonus disc too!!), Jesca Hoop, Memory Tapes (also comes with an exclusive free bonus disc), Delphic, Wild Beasts, Dizzee Rascal, Alice Russell & loads more, all at a frankly ridiculous £4.99.
If you’re fancying a night out this week, then this Thursday, 5th August @ 8pm sees the relaunch & relocation of The Resident-cy. It’s now at Fitzherberts (next to the Mash Tun). The Residents are stepping out of the shop, armed with our favourite selection of vinyl, for the very first night of our new monthly residency, taking place on the 1st Thursday of every month. Expect a wide-ranging eclectic mix that should satisfy the tastes of many a discerning listener, including our picks of the best soul, funk, riot grrrl, post-punk, no-wave, rockabilly, afrobeat, electronica, shoegaze, dancehall, garage & much, much more! We’ll also be saying seeyaaa to ex-Resident Liv, who is moving on to pastures new. Come on down & keep us company. Full details can be found when you sign onto Facebook at :
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=105487306172130&ref=ts.
If you’re looking for something new to treat your ears, then check out our new list of staff recommendations on the link at the top.
That’s plenty from us for another week me thinks. Have a splendid week & hope to see lots of you at Fitzherberts on Thursday.

Album of the Week :
Tom Jones : Praise & Blame (Island)
Thomas “the voice” Woodward returns with a flippin’ awesome collection of songs! A landmark album, which incredibly comes in the legendary singer’s 70th year, it’s a glowing achievement in his 45-year career. The songs are taken from repertoire that includes American traditional, gospel & country, seeing Tom going back to his roots & creating a truly evocative musical work, aided & abetted by producer/musician Ethan Johns (in much the same way as Johnny Cash worked with Rick Rubin on his ‘American’ series). From the opening track, a stunning version of Dylan’s ‘What Good Am I’, moving through a disconcerted ‘Did Trouble Me’, a gut-howling version of John Lee Hooker’s ‘Burning Hell’ & on to the exhortations of ‘Run on’, these tracks appear to – with the help of Ethan & the band – be ready made for Tom Jones. if you are a fan of William Elliott Whitmore, Johnny Cash, The Black Keys or T-bone Burnett, don’t dismiss this – seriously!
Greetings one n’ all!
Tom Jones? Album of the week? It’s not unusual! Nope, the sun hasn’t sent us completely round the twist quite yet, indeed Mr Jones’ new one really is an awesome listen, more about that above. Plenty of other releases this week worthy of mention…. the 3rd collaboration between Steven Hess & Sylvain Chauveau under the ‘On’ moniker, continues their excavation of abstracted experimental sounds & has been completely re-worked, re-arranged & re-composed by Fennesz into intense, slow-building dronescapes….Brazilian TV & VCR repairman & musical freedom fighter Tony Da Gatorra & Super Furries man Gruff Rhys team up for a bizarre rock record of unmediated spontaneity….Chris Abrahams of The Necks brings us a mesmerising collection of granular electro-acoustic pieces….Mahjongg thrill us with more genre-baiting, serving up a dancefloor bomb of booty-bumping dance music, or as the band prefers, “Chicagotronics”….The Intelligence serve up 10 songs that could be either ecclesiastic alien probes, Hank Williams going electro-slash, or John Lennon making friends with a video game….dreamy retro-pop is the order of the day on the new record from The Magic Numbers….Gemma Ray, the pop-noir songstress from deepest Essex, delivers a charismatic, stripped-down covers album…former Galaxie 500 frontman Dean Wareham & his wife/former Luna bandmate Britta Wareham deliver a collection of tunes initially commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh under the moniker of Dean & Britta….it’s a solid release week for hip hop, with new albums from UK hero Klashnekoff, an ace mix from Cut Chemist, a return of New York veteran Mf Grimm, a record of conscious hip hop from Dilated Peoples member Rakaa plus a collection of early instrumentals from the Grime Godfather Wiley….some solid reggae too with a couple of great new Trojan compilations as well as reissues of legendary albums from The Upsetters & Max Romeo….other tit-bits this week include records from Jaill, K-X-P, Light Pollution, Nadja, Dead Raven Choir, & Incognito. As ever, click on the link below for the full rundown of what’s out this week.

Album of the Week : Mount Kimbie : Crooks & Lovers (Hotflush)
(cd / lp) Dubstep continues its bold voyage into the unknown with this excellent long-player from London’s Mount Kimbie. Untethered by etiquette & genre boundaries, ‘Crooks & Lovers’ melds the sounds of many of our favourite artists into a wonderful & seemingly sceneless whole : the hard-earned spaces of Burial & The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu & Grouper’s sad-eyed glow….D’Angelo’s perverted soul gets cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones….Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres find a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope…..& the resulting record floats through dubstep & hip-hop, jazz, techno & ambient, post-rock, uk garage & film scores to startling effect.
Single of the Week :
Panda Bear : Tomboy / Slow Motion (Paw Tracks)
(ultra limited 7” – 1000 only for europe) Boy were we excited about this…..the 1st new Panda Bear music since 2007’s mind-blowing ‘Person Pitch’ album. Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox is due to release several limited singles on different independent labels & each one will bring us closer & closer to the much anticipated release of the ‘Tomboy’ full length. Never one to rest on his laurels, Lennox has blazed yet another unexplored sonic trail. These 2 new songs maintain the kind of upbeat vibe found on ‘Person Pitch’ but forged with a new sonic language that isn’t as sample-centric. Dance beats meld effortlessly with electric guitars & Noah’s now trademark vocal harmonies, to create the next Panda Bear sound. Mmmmmm…..! Get in quick for this one!
Hello you lot!
Aside from the aforementioned pick of the week from Mount Kimbie, this week we have an array of new releases for you from the likes of our fave minimalist modern-classical composer Max Richter……ex-Brightonian Will “Quantic” Holland delivers the 2nd album from his tropical/dub/reggae inspired side project the Flowering Inferno – perfect for the summer sunshine!…..nu-folkie Seth Lakeman is out to reclaim his crown from the Mumfords, Marlings & Noahs with his most mature & compelling record to date……Brighton’s own Robot Heart release their brilliant debut EP of folk-pop that is bound to appeal to fans of The Miserable Rich & the likes of – don’t forget to come & see them at the EP launch here on Tuesday…….New York vintage rock-obsessed stoners Endless Boogie return with more streamlined rhythms & epic jams……..The Verve’s shamanic mainman Richard Ashcroft goes solo-ish & under the new pseudonym of RPA & The United Nations Of Sound adding a dose of soul to his sound through the use of some hip hop & r’n'b schooled collaborators…….Canada’ s Tokyo Police Club are back with their 2nd full-length of taut, catchy anthems & it comes with an indies only bonus disc too…….The Be Good Tanyas’ Frazey Ford strikes out on her own with her beautiful voice set against low-key folksy arrangements……fans of Hudson Mowhawke & Floating Points should check out the future-past-bridging Planet Mu release from Oriol…..Jana Hunter fans need to check out Baltimore’s Lower Dens – her new project……fans of Wooden Shjips / Moon Duo etc should check out the album of gloriously melted. fried psych from fellow San Franciscans Carlton Melton……all this & brand new singles from the likes of Panda Bear (see Single of the Week), School Of Seven Bells, Four Tet, Fresh & Onlys, Ice Black Birds, Toro Y Moi & more & vinyl releases from Thomas Koner, Mahjongg, Richard Youngs, Moritz Von Oswald & more.

Album of the Week : O.Children : O.Children (Deadly People) – comes with an exclusive bonus remix disc
Brooding & Goth-tinged rock is the order of the day on this deliciously dark debut from O.Children. Led by the beautifully intense baritone voice of Tobi O’Kandi, their music is at once thunderous, epic & heartfelt. Full of strange hooks, swirling minimalist guitars & 80s drums & with serious nods to the likes of Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division & of course Nick Cave (who wrote the song the band took as their name), their debut may be highly derivative but this 4-piece have taken up the new-wave / post-punk reins & with their cascading basslines, spiky guitars, tinny percussion & ghostly synths, they have come up with a winning, fresh combination.
Aside from the aforementioned O.Children album with the exclusive bonus remix disc, this week we also have top releases from the likes of The School Of Seven Bells whose spellbinding sophomore album was previewed acoustic style in the shop this week – what an amazing instore – thank you to all of you who made it & hung around for the late running band – we hope you agree it was worth it. Album of the Week :
Grasscut – 1 inch / 1/2 mile (Ninja Tune) The highly anticipated debut from Brighton’s award-winning film & tv composer Andrew Phillips & double bass, keyboards & miscellaneous noise-bringer Marcus O’Dair. Together they make a weird but wonderful pop hybrid. Although the electronic clicks & whirrs that pepper the album display a love for technology, there is still something very traditional & pastoral about their sound, conjuring rolling green hills & quaint English villages alike. Like a dream collaboration on the South Downs between Nathan Fake, Tunng & Mum, this comes unreservedly recommended.
Aside from our pick of the week, Grasscut, there are also new albums from the likes of Guy Garvey’s pet favourites (he’s produced this, their 5th record) I Am Kloot & their uber-talented frontman John Bramwell proves that he’s still one of the most criminally over-looked songwriters of our times……..Montreal’s much loved indie-rockers Wolf Parade return with their 3rd album of maximalist, upbeat, multi-instrumental all-conquering sounds…..also on album number 3 are Rhode Island’s Deer Tick who continue to mine a rich vein of Americana on their folk/blues/country melding new offering, earning them Uncut’s album of the month status……..if you’ve been a fan of the BBC Radiophonic workshop, Ghost Box output or even have a passing interest in electronic music then you’ll want to check out the extremely limited & very special indeed quadruple vinyl set of Daphne Oram’s music – you can read John’s verdict on his recommended write up above…… Gudrun Gut & AGF pair up as Greie Gut Fraktion for an ace post-kraut-dub-industrial-techno exploration…..the musically bonkers Mystery Jets are thankfully still bursting with humour, passion & optimism………the turbulently joyous record from Woom is one of skittering beats, deep diving bass, crumbling guitars & crackling voices & it’s a definite hit with us……..the ever reliable dub-step label Tectonic release a hefty double album called Dark Matter, celebrating the darker side of the genre…..if you like your female vocalists to be quirky in a Feist / Camille like way then we recommend you check out the enchanting album from Cours Lapin….it’s a big week for singles too with 2 amazing & very limited Ghost Box 7″s from Belbury Poly / Moon Wiring Club & The Advisory Circle / Hong Kong In The 60s & releases from the likes of M.I.A., !!!, Bombay Bicycle Club, Foals, Rob The Rich, Late, Tired Pony & many more.

Album of the Week : Deepchord presents Echospace – Liumin (Modern Love)
(limited 2cd) Rod Modell & Steve Hitchell return for their 2nd full length, the follow up to the rapturously received ‘The Coldest Season’. Over the last few years, Modell developed a fascination with Tokyo & made a number of field recordings there, which eventually became the source material for this album (& which can be found in their original form on the 2nd disc). ‘Liumin’ is an altogether more destroyed experience than its predecessor, somehow managing to harness the disorientating experience of being a stranger in a strange land, with only the flickering glow of neon lights for company. It unfurls with stretches of immersive techno & low-end treatments compressed with a growling, unstable focus that’s in turn oppressive & soothing, Re-creating the uniquely ambiguous euphoria/narcosis that comes with extended sleep deprivation. Highly recommended.
