In terms of album releases, the dry spell continues a bit, to be honest. There are some albums very much worthy of note though – the suddenly prolific Resonant label have given us our album of the week which somes from Small Sails who are from Portland, Oregon & make beautifully warm, electronic music that should appeal to fans of Caribou, The Album Leaf or Postal Service……..check out the new release on Mike Patton’s ever strange Ipecac label from Eyvind Kang, which inevitably features Patton himself alongside a whole host of others, in a classical / ambient / post-metal project which is truly captivating…………..Beirut’s ultratalented Zach Condon & A Hawk & A Hacksaw’s Heather Trost join a student by the name of Brandon Bethancourt & together they go under the name of Alaska In Winter to deliver an album which essentially sounds like an electronic version of Beirut with vocoder & beats………..Jonny Trunk presents bargain produced sampler Now We Are Ten, covering a decade of strange & beautiful music from his extraordinary label………ESG deliver another fantastic South Bronx Story collection, this time of rarities, alternate mixes & classic tracks……..for all you Fat Freddy’s Drop fans, there’s a new album from their fellow countrymen The Black Seeds, who work in similar territory & share many of the same fans back home…….the GoodBooks finally release their debut album to much critical acclaim…………there’s The Story Of Northern Soul compilations – 4 individual cds with top quality tracklistings which celebrate the Northern Soul movement, each covering a different club………Common releases his Kanye West produced effort which is being hailed by those in the know as his best work for a long long time………..there’s the brilliant 2nd volume of the Gypsy Beats & Balkan Bangers compilation to dance on table tops to…………….Bugz In The Attic provide the next installment of the untouchable Back To Mine compilation series……….all this & new albums from Korn, Meat Puppets, Tegan & Sara, EdgarJones & The Joneses, Durutti Column, Newton Faulkner & much more besides (even in a quiet week).

Sadly, another quiet week on the releases but there are still plenty of really great offerings amongst the slim pickings. Our faves of the week come from Tenebrous Liar who are a supergroup of sorts, made up of  acclaim

ed cult photographer

Steve Gullick, enigmatic solo artist Ed Harcourt & south

London bluesman Duke Garwood amongst others. It should appeal to fans of Mark Lanegan & having fallen for this album, we felt we had to make it our gig of the week, too, as they happen to be playing at the Pressure Point on Monday. There’s also the

uk release of the dazzling Toumast album. Their founder, Mousa Ag

Kenya, us

ed to be a member of Tinariwen & this will certainly give you an idea of the sound of this album – not to be miss

ed. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs deliver an incr

edible ep of live favourites which they have taken to the studio & treat

ed to the full works. A worthwhile venture that has provid

ed us with some rather excellent yyy’s action. The Thrills return with their 3rd album & initial copies of the album come with a

jolly nice free sign

ed poster. Lethal Bizzle hits us with another dose of his world view, hip hop styley. There’s also a heap of reissues from the likes of Joan as Police Woman (now comes with a bonus disc), Culture, Os Mutantes &

Rickie Lee Jones(her latest album now comes with a bonus live disc).  The albums may be a little lighter than usual but the singles are still arriving in their plenty & this week sees the release of one of the tracks of the year from Architecture In Helsinki, there’s a very limited indies only 7” from Twilight Sad, a gorgeous release on the leaf label from Nancy Elizabeth, the Tiny Masters of Today are out after bedtime again & Nine Black Alps return with the poppiest track from their forthcoming new album.

We appear to have hit a bit of a quiet spot which wil give us all a chance to breathe & catch up on the ones that slipped through the net over the last few very busy weeks. If you’re craving something new then we can wholeheartedly recommend the 2nd offering from Port Royal who have almost left their post rock roots behind & have ventured into the more electronic territory they excelled at on their debut……..there are also great releases from Fitkin Wall who have made a delicious album of ‘harptronica’……….we’ve got an import of a US only release from Spank Rock, designed as a companion to their recent Fabric compilation…….sweden’s classy & cool Studio take us on an afrobeat-dub-disco-indie-pop adventure………Tru Thoughts pop out another gem & this time it’s from the threesome Belleruche………….the ultra-prolific Madlib returns under his jazzy guise of Yesterday’s New Quintet………the wacky jazz dance tokyo outfit Soil & Pimp bring us more stupendous playing & there’s a great set of bargain priced multiple disc blues releases including Robert Johnson, Blind Willie Mctell & Blind Lemon Jefferson, all packaged in boxes with extensive notes. If you fancy some singles action then check out the XX Teens fab new 7″, there’s a new indies only Beirut 7″, David E Sugar’s brilliant 12″ is released on the Hot Chip affiliated label greco roman, we’ve got a stupidly limited 12″ of Erol Alkan’s essential Long Blondes mixes (only 600 worldwide) & loads loads more – just pop to the counter to see for yourself. For a complete list of all this week’s new albums & singles, click here:new releases july 16th 2007
