new releases september 3rd 2007
first up, we couldn’t decide between 2 totally awesome albums this week so we decided to not bother chosing & just go for both. They are frankly both essential purchases in our humble opinion : the 1st is from Portland’s experimental outfit Menomena whose 3rd album really is something quite special – a bit of an unpredictable, dramatic listen that is likey to appeal to fans of Flaming Lips, TV On The Radio & The Strange Death Of Liberal England in particular……….the 2nd is from Vic Chesnutt & this release came as a genuine surprise – it features the whole of Silver Mt.Zion & guests from Fugazi & Godspeed, no less, which instantly made us sit up & take notice but the result really is rather spectacular – like Silver Mt. Zion meets Lambchop via Micah P Hinson - loving it!………….also worthy of note are releases from James Toth aka Wooden Wand (who in any other week would probably have made album of the week) whose record is instantly satisfying………..the much raved about St.Vincent album is released this week & her cinematic pop epics should appeal to fans of Cat Power or Feist……….there’s the brilliant anticipated follow up to our compilation of the year 2006, Soul Jazz’s ‘Tropicalia’ in the form of ‘Brazil 70 – After Tropicalia’……..Jon Spencer & Matt Verta-Ray’s project Heavy Trash produces it’s 2nd album offering & it’s pure, unabashed rock ‘n’ roll fun from start to finish……. the much delayed Eighties Matchbox ep The Garden is finally out & comes with a bonus disc of 10 live tracks……….Linda Thompson gathers together all her friends & family (including Teddy Thompson, Martha Wainwright, Martin & Eliza Carthy & more, along with the ubiquitous Antony Hegarty for her new record…….there’s a beautiful new hazy record on (Resident favourites) Type Records from Skallander……..Joseph Arthur does a Bruce Springsteen / Guns & Roses / Bright Eyes & release 2 new albums on the same day…….Funkstorung’s Michael Fakesch makes a funky, soulful & refreshing album in the vein of Jamie Lidell’s classic ‘Multiply’……Talib Kweli is back with his 4th album which showcases his lyrical powers……….expanded reissues of classics from Pink Floyd & Dexys Midnight Runners…..all this & much, much more besides so check out the full list here: new releases september 3rd 2007
