Albums of the Week : Telepathe – Dance Mother (Wichita)
The Sight Below – Glider (Ghostly International)
Women – Women (Jagjaguwar)
Single of the Week : Mi Ami – Echononecho (touch & go)
Welcome to the last week of January! Hope those resolutions have been going well! Looks like my resolution to be more decisive isn’t going so well, as this week we have 3 albums of the week – they’re all equally worthy of the top spot though so hey, why chose when you can have them all?!
So, seeing us through the wet & windy weather this week , we have the much hailed Brooklynites Telepathe who have employed the seemingly never-ending production talents of TV On The Radio’s David Sitek to help them out on their stunning debut of dark but danceable hybrid pop……..Ghostly International signing The Sight Below delivers an astonishingly warm, hazy, late-night techno soundtrack – one for fans of Gas, The Field or Fennesz – yummy!………& our final pick of the week comes from Women, a group of Canadian chaps (how jolly confusing) who mix post-punk with San Fran psych, the Velvet Underground & Californian vibes for a set of scuzzy, fuzzy, lo-fi noise which is sure to please fans of No Age or Abe Vigoda………this week also sees releases from ex-post-punk revivalists turned dance mongers Franz Ferdinand who release their 3rd album to critical acclaim & on a variety of formats (1cd, 2cd, boxset, vinyl) but all formats come with a free poster while they last & our 1st 12 copies of the standard cd are also signed by all band members – get in quick!………….we’ve got some nice early copies of the fab new Rough Trade Counter Culture compilation from those trusty shop staff – a pretty decent summary of the great musical year that 2008 was………Warp signings Hudson Mohawke warms us up with an EP of genre-defying hip-hop & pop beats that’s bound to please fans of Flying Lotus & Clark…… Glaswegian sextet The Phantom Band have been receiving rave press everywhere & their debut is musically all over the place but in the most sonically pleasing way……..the Fleet Foxes sticksman J.Tillman releases his 5th solo album which truly showcases his fabulous songwriting abilities with minimal instrumentation – a slow burning winner……..the Boss is back & this time Bruce Springsteen has gone for a crowd pleasing set of stadium fillers………..the Chicago based electronic duo Telefon Tel Aviv make a welcome return with their 3rd full length of tensely programmed beats………the dj/producer extraordinaire Diplo shows off his remixing skills on his collection of reworkings that’s sure to get any party started…………alternative hip hopsters Dalek deliver a great set of dark, intelligent modern hip hop…….there are a couple of dvd treats from Willard Grant Conspiracy & The Clash & we’ve also got a limited amount of the wonderfully compiled book ‘Rob Gretton – 1 Top Class Manager‘ published by Rob Gretton’s widow about his time as Joy Division’s manager, at a cheaper price than we’ve seen it anywhere……..all this & new releases from Lukid, Prurient, Claro Intelecto, Mr.Oizo, Alaska In Winter, The Bird & The Bee, MV & EE, The Shaky Hands, John Frusciante, Darren Hayman, Architects, Baskery, Cara Dillon & loads loads more. Album of the Week : Teeth of the Sea – Orphaned By The Ocean (Rocket)
Single of the Week : Banjo Or Freakout – Mr.No / Someone Great (No Pain In Pop)
Alrighty then, here goes…………..
This fine week sees the release of the fabulous album from avant rockers Teeth of the Sea who brilliantly combine the bold brass instrumentation of Beirut with the dark drones & post-rock stylings of Om, Earth & Grails………….Antony & The Johnsons release their 3rd studio album which sees Mr.Hegarty teaming up with the modern composer & Philip Glass protege Nico Mulhy to produce a collection of beautiful, poetic & contemplative songs that grow deeper with every listen (comes with a free poster while they last)…………..Resident favourite lonesome bear-eater Justin Vernon, delivers a full band ep under their now very well known Bon Iver moniker – 4 exclusive tracks & some more utterly beguilling & unmatchable music from the mindblowing outfit…………….this year’s hotly tipped indie outfit White Lies, may have had a “fear of flying” when they first started out but they’d better get over that quick as they are set to soar high this year with their massive Joy Division meets the Killers debut & if you get in quick, you’ll get a free poster & bag with your cd/lp………the very desirable Factory Records 4cd boxset celebrates 30 years of the label that changed the face of british music (& beyond) forever & takes us from the 1st release to the last across their entire roster……..Tom “Squarepusher” Jenkinson takes us back to his roots with an ep of muscular, beat-driven dancefloor tracks, following on from the success of “Just A Souvenir” last year………….Australia’s Cam Butler, also of Silver Ray, releases his 5th studio album of beautifully dynamic, instrumental compositions which are sure to appeal to fans of Dirty Three, Godspeed! or The Black Heart Procession…………..the 2nd volume of The Art Of Field Recording boxset is a lovingly assembled collection from the folk revivalist Art Rosenbaum that’ll keep you amused for hours & hours……………& on vinyl we finally have the Noah & the Whale sideproject The A-Sides which should have been with us before Christmas so apologies for the delay, the instrumental release from Peter Bjorn & John which was supposed to come out months ago but has finally seen the light of day & the new album from Mike Bones (released on cd next week).

Album of the Week : Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavilion (Domino)
Hello everyone & welcome to the 1st proper new release week of 2009 – & what a way to start!! As you know, we’ve been banging on about how amaaaazing the new Animal Collective album is for a while now & we’re still loving it everytime we listen to it (many times a day in fact!). So, if you want some glorious technicolour to start off your 2009 record collection, this has to be the place to start………if you missed out on the incredible but rather creepy album from The Caretaker last year, then now’s your chance to get your hands on this gorgeously crackly & distorted masterpiece as we have a handful of import copies available…………fans of Alva Noto, Fennesz, Raster Noton releases or glitch-tronica should check out the new release from Robert Henke – it’s fab!………the 4th B.Fleischmann album finally sees its cd release after some distribution problems for the fab Morr Music label…………the hotly tipped Lady Gaga releases her 80s inspired synth pop debut…………those fun-time Californian hip hoppers Ugly Duckling prove they can remain gritty, funky & relevant after 15 years together………singles aren’t exactly in full flow yet but there’s a great offering from ex-Deerhunter Colin Mee aka Hollow Stars, the TV On The Radio remix 12″ with Prefuse 73 & Telepathe reworkings & the massive White Lies single confirms that they are all set to be this year’s Editors / Killers / Glasvegas.
