Album of the Week : These Are Powers – All Aboard Future (Dead Oceans)

Single of the Week
: Disconcerts – Human Figure In Motion / Chance Remark (Structurally Sound)

Hello Everyone!
Hope you’ve all had a lovely week. We’d like to thank all of you who came down to support our new Djing stint at the Fortune of War last Thursday. We had an ace time playing our fave records. Then we got to see how the kids do it when Calum unplugged everything, booted up his laptop & ’spun’ some MP3s (bloody cheat!) & finally we got shown how to do it all properly when James brought out his own needles & slip mats & hit the decks for the last hour for some super slick scratching (bloody show-off!). Apparently we were alright, so they’re letting us back next month – we’ll keep you posted about the date. It’s nice to be involved in the relaunch of one of Brighton’s best pubs – it’s not just great in the summer beacuse you can get takeouts & sit on the beach – unlike most of Brighton’s pubs, it’s got loads of character inside & offers the best sea view window seats we know of.

Anyway, onto the new releases. This week’s top spot has been claimed by the Brooklyn / Chicago noise trio These Are Powers whose insistent beats & effects-skewed guitars have wowed us this week & are likely to appeal to fans of Gang Gang Dance or Telepathe……….we’ve potentially already got the compilation of the year lined up with the new Kompakt Pop Ambient 2009 – it’s been curated by Wolfgang Voigt / Gas which tells you the kind of quality you’ll be expecting here & it features tracks from Tim Hecker, Fun Years, Voigt himself, Klimek & more……..the Black Keys singer & guitarist Dan Auerbach has decided to go it alone for a record & delivers a fine album of outsider blues rock which isn’t too far away from the material his band produce but it’s a bit rougher & rawer than their last Dangermouse produced effort……..Swedish duo First Aid Kit might be jolly young but they look back to bygone times for their gorgeous folky ep which was originally released on the Knife’s label but is now reissued by Wichita with 2 bonus tracks – Alela Diane fans may well enjoy this one……..the mighty Prodigy return with their 5th album  – a consistent album of bangers with huge hooks – everything you’d want from them really & it comes with a free poster if you get in quick………..Mush deliver their 1st great album in ages through Sleeper – it’s a bit hip hop, a bit electronica, a bit post rock but its all very grainy, eerie & atmospheric – top stuff……..the 2nd album from Freda Hyvonen has finally been released after weeks of delay…….also inexplicably delayed for ages but now finally out, is the essential 4cd Jesus & Mary Chain boxset………..….And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead return with an ambitious record which harks back to their roots having been freed from the shackles of a major label…….Piano maestro Haushcka pops out an ep of previously unreleased material recorded during the sessions for his last album……….if you like the Make Mine Music output or minimal, organic compositions, check out the beautiful release from Northerner this week – it’s a limited 2 cd set with great remixes from the likes of Bracken, Portal, Aus, Epic45 & more……….if you’ve been a fan of Mali’s Amadou & Mariam, check out the new album from their country-mate Oumou Sangare who has delivered a “masterpiece” according to man-in-the-know Charlie Gillett…….all this & new albums from Malakai, Odawas, Sunny Day Sets Fire, New Rhodes, Jazzanova, Lars Horntveth, Boozoo Bajou, Rebotini, Matthew Shipp Trio, Blink & more. We’ve also got the BPA (Brighton Port Authority) album on vinyl, 2 weeks ahead of its cd release – it’s Norman Cook’s new collaborative venture. Album of the Week : Alela Diane – To Be Still (Names) further details below……

Single of the Week
: Fever Ray – If I Had A Heart (Rabid) – incredible 1st single from the Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson, taken from the amazing album due out on March 23rd. Check out the video too.

Big news this week is that we have been asked to take up a once a month “Resident-cy” at the excellect Fortune Of War pub on the seafront (drop down from the Odeon & you’re there) that starts this Thursday, the 19th, at 9.45pm – til we get kicked out. We’d love as many of you as possible to come down & support us as we’ve never done a collective shop Djing thing before. It’s going to be a completely mixed bag that reflects all out tastes, so it should be fun & pretty varied. Fine music, booze & a sea view – what more could you want on a Thursday evening?

Anyway, plenty to shout about on the music front, so let’s go! Shop favourite Alela Diane follows up her stunning debut ‘The Pirate’s Gospel’ with a beautiful album laden with pedal steel, violin & rustic percussion, topped with her unique, enchanting vocals – a definite winner but then we didn’t expect it to be anything else……..Zach Condon returns under his Beirut guise with 2 ep’s gathered together on 2 discs. The 1st disc is a foray into mexican folk music, with Condon roping in an obscure small-town mexican funeral band, whilst the 2nd disc heads into electro-synth pop territory for an altogether different style we’re used to from him – if you get in quick, you’ll get one of the posters & postcards which have been especially made for selected indies.…..Aussie weirdy-pop project Empire Of The Sun turn out their debut, a bright, shiny pop record that sounds like the result of Prince making a Flaming Lips record. Fans of MGMT are gonna love this…American treaure M.Ward returns, bringing with him an eloquent & startingly beautiful album……Iowa’s William Elliott Whitmore delivers another stunner of incredible vocals backed with guitar & banjo but this time bulks it out with strings, pedal steel & organ – he’s booked in for an instore on the 14th April so keep that 6pm slot free!……4AD get all charitable & release a superb compilation called Dark Was The Night of exclusive covers & originals by artists such as Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Arcade Fire, Beirut, Sufjan Stevens, Cat Power & many more, all raising money & awareness for hiv/aids charity the red hot organization…….Morrissey returns with his 9th solo album & although there are no surprises here, he pulls out a muscular, masterful work that proves why Mozza is such a legend…….Jah Wobble’s album with the Chinese Dub Orchestra finally gets released & sees his trademark dub married with Chinese instrumentation to great effect…….Scottish miserabilist Aidan Moffat makes a somewhat cheerier album than expected but it still manages to sound like a suitable follow up to Arab Strap’s final offering – there’s a limited, very fancy boxset board game version of the album too……..the gorgeous new album from Mountains (aka Koen Holtkamp & Brendon Anderegg) offers up 6 stunning tracks of highly evolved drone folk………Japan’s electronic chillout master Susumu Yokota has added a selection of sublime female vocals to his glistening & atmospheric sounds…….the New Pornographers’ A.C.Newman serves up a 2nd solo set of wonderfully crafted, shiny, layered pop songs……..there are 2 ace slices of seriously dense darkness to bury yourselves in this week – the 1st from the ridiculously prolific ambient drone prodigies Emeralds & the 2nd from Type’s extraordinary doommonger Svarte Greiner…Boston’s much talked about Passion Pit put out their ep of euphoric but blissfully melancholic tunes……..Brooklynites Asobi Seksu ditch the shoegaze aesthetics & replace them with a 4AD influenced dream pop sound which works surprisingly well…..all this & new albums from Platinum Pied Pipers (PPP), Sing Fang Bous (aka Seabear), Dent May & His Magnificent Uklele, The Drones, Mike Badger, Neal Casal, Filastine, N.A.S.A., Pama International, Delta Spirit (vinyl only at the mo) & loads more. The awesome Crystal Stilts album gets its official uk release this week too (weren’t they brilliant the other night at New Hero?).
