Album of the Week : Crippled Black Phoenix – 200 Tons Of Bad Luck / The Resurrectionists & Night Raider (Invada)
Single of the Week : The Maccabees – Love You Better (Polydor)
Gig of the Week : Au @ The Freebutt – Monday, April 27th (Album of the Week recipients way back in November of last year & firm staff favourites. You would be a fool to miss this!)
Hello!
Firstly, we are duty bound to inform you that the Maccabees instore this Monday is now sold out… but fear not, if you stick around you will be able to get your singles / posters / limbs / underwear (delete as applicable) signed by the band after their performance and be able to preorder signed copies of their forthcoming album.
Talking of instores, we are very excited to confirm we have Black Mountain side project, The Pink Mountaintops playing at 7pm on Thursday 7th May - no tickets, just turn up. Fence Collective co-founder The Pictish Trail can’t keep away & will be returning to play the shop at 6pm on Friday 8th May – again, no tickets, just turn up. And last but by no means least we have the hotly tipped Portland band, Hockey playing at 6pm, Monday June 1st – this will be ticketed due to demand ,so pop into the shop to find out how you can get your mits on a pair of tickets. We have also finally got around to uploading photos of our recent instores & Record Store Day shenanigans and you can check them out on our Facebook page.
In all the excitement of the last couple of weeks we didn’t really big up the bunch of titles we have got cheap recently and really we would be doing you a disservice if we didn’t make a fuss. We have had a whole bunch at £4.99 which are absolute steals including the all conquering Fleet Foxes debut (single disc version), Telepathe’s debut, Martha Wainwright’s 2nd, Andrew Bird’s latest and other great titles by the likes of Jenny Lewis, The Raconteurs, Joan As Policewoman, The Knife, Stereolab, Beck, Secret Machines, Eagles of Death Metal & many more besides. We also have a campaign on Fabric titles including DJ Yoda, Diplo, Spank Rock, Evil Nine, Krafty Kuts all at the bargain price of £6.99. These are all limited deals, so you will have to be quick to take advantage and you should, you really should!
So what sparkly & new musical gems do we have for you this week? Well, if Royston Vasey produced a post rock group they might well sound as glorious as Crippled Black Phoenix – who include Mogwai’s Dominic Aitchison among their number… Bob Dylan graces our racks with his, hell I’ve lost count, 30-something studio album & once again proves that you don’t have to go downhill as you get older… if you have been thinking that Metric are overdue a new album then your luck is in! Emily Haines & co. are back…….dutch dubstep don Martyn’s album has been a long time coming and it’s been worth the wait… fans of Boards of Canada & Bola should check out the new record by Cathode… Thee Oh Sees return with another garage belter… Type come up trumps once again with Mokira’s second album of ambient wonder… two moonlighting Arcade Fire members return under their Bell Orchestre moniker with a 2nd album of sonic adventure… the hotly tipped Golden Silvers deliver their own unique take on wonky english pop… & Nick Cave has got round to remastering the 1st batch of his back catalogue. All this & releases from The Enemy, Ben Harper, Video Nasties, Tosca, The Manchester Orchestra & singles from the likes of Morrissey, The XX, Rumblestrips, Peaches & Bloc Party.

Wowzers! That was one seriously hectic week that we won’t be repeating again in a hurry!! The most important thing though is that it was a great success & that you lot all seemed to enjoy yourself at the instores & during Record Store Day – as did we. We are very very grateful for all the support (& the cakes) we have had from you this week – it made it all worth while. We were very proud to hold some of the best instores we’ve ever had here & all the artists who have played have been utterly brilliant to work with, so many, many thanks to Blue Roses, Bela Emerson, Birdengine & Jacob’s Stories for playing on our birthday, William Elliott Whitmore, Daniel Michaelson & Fujiya & Miyagi for continuing the festivities & finally to Emiliana Torrini for bringing the week to a fittingly brilliant end on Record Store Day itself. If you’d like to see some of the photos from this week’s events, I am attempting to work out how to put them on our news/blog/web page thing but haven’t managed to compress the files yet. I’ll get one of the kids who knows how to do modern things to get them onto our Facebook page asap this week. If in the meantime any of you have good photos or film footage of any of this week’s events (or indeed any others) please let us have a copy.
Gluttons for punishment that we are, we have arranged another instore for you which is by no means going to be a quiet one. So, we are very excited to announce that, to celebrate the release of The Maccabee’s new single, ‘Love You Better’, we will be welcoming the band back to play another instore here on the day of release, Monday 27th April at 6pm. To guarantee entry to the show, you will need a ticket – just ask instore to find out how to get your hands on your free ticket (or call 01273 606312). If its anything like the last time they played here, it’s going to be a full on, packed out show, so you won’t want to miss out! As an extra bonus, anyone who preorders the album at the instore will receive a signed copy of the cd upon its release the following week.
Even before that though, on Wednesday of this week (22nd), the fabulous Tom Brosseau will be popping by at 5.30pm with his guitar, to play a set of songs for us. Feel free to pop down & keep us company – this will be his 3rd instore here. The crazy man just can’t keep away! If you’ve not seen him before though, you should come & see what this weirdy troubadour is all about. He made a customer faint last time he played in the shop – he’s that good!!
Further ahead, we’ll also be welcoming back the Fence Collective’s lovely Pictish Trail on Friday May 8th, prior to his gig at the Quadrant that evening.

This post is to tell you all about the events we have planned to celebate both Record Store Day & Resident’s 5th Birthday. Fellow obsessive musos, collectors & straight up music lovers take note, this is a week for you……..
Click on the links below for a brief summary of the content of this email. You’ll probably want to read it all though just to make sure you don’t miss out on anything!
record store day exclusive titles
a week of instores
birthday bargains
“The local record store is a cultural event. Every purchase you make , every day, every year, it is a rich cultural history in the making. I have precious memories of my favorite shops & so do many of my best friends. That’s shared history man. That’s powerful stuff.” – Brett Netson (Built To Spill)
“I have watched independent record stores evaporate all over America and Europe. If we lose the independent record store, we lose big. Every time you buy your records at one of these places, it’s a blow to the empire.” – Henry Rollins
” Record stores can’t save your life. But they can give you a better one.” – Nick Hornby
“A proper record shop – a place that reminds us that music is more than dumb file sharing and the management of dead data by faceless sociopathic corporations, but a storehouse of dreams, both possible and impossible.” – Max Richter
These are just a few of the comments made by bands/artists in response to Record Store Day. It is an international event being held on Saturday 18th April & there are 67 stores taking part in the UK. We, of course, are one of them. so here’s what it’s all about………
Whether you are a casual, whimsical buyer or the “simply can’t help yourself” obsessive type, you deserve a decent record shop in which to spend your hard earned cash & the bands & artists that pour their heart & soul into their work, deserve to be properly represented on the high street. Sadly, independent record shops have become fewer & further between, in the past few years especially, so we need to ensure that those of us left, provide you with the best service, music & experience possible. To this end, a set of people around the globe have joined forces to establish Record Store Day. It’s all about the independents. It’s all about the bands. It’s all about the fans & the music lovers.
On this day, Saturday 18th April, you will be able to buy a whole load of titles completely exclusively, through the participating shops. They will all be extremely limited. As a taster of what’s on offer, there are exclusive early releases from Wooden Shjips (with a bonus disc of ace music chosen by the band), Graham Coxon & Wilco, exclusive compilations from Thrill Jockey, the Numero Group, Rough Trade (a cassette!) & Domino, exclusive 7″s from Tom Waits, Sonic Youth/Beck, Sonic Youth/Jay Reatard, signed copies of the new The Big Pink 7″ (exclusive to us), loads of Rhino reissues from the likes of New Order, The Stooges & Janes Addiction, loads of exclusive vinyl releases including the recent Arthur Russell album, free stuff & much, much more than I can type out here. To see a complete list of all the titles that have been confirmed as exclusives for this day so far, click on the link at the top.
Also, we will be celebrating our 5th Birthday on Monday 13th April so, we thought it made sense to link these 2 major events together with a week of instores & bargains.
The instores begin on Monday 13th with the new XL signing Blue Roses, popping in to launch her gorgeous debut (not officially released until the end of the month but exclusivly available from us at the instore) & the run ends with the adorable shop favourite Emiliana Torrini who will be playing for us on Record Store Day itself. As this is likely to be a ridiculously popular instore, we are going to issue tickets on the day. Basically, anyone who comes in & makes a purchase on RSD to support the day, will be entitled to 1 ticket to the show in the evening (while they last). We also have a Brighton showcase which features 3 of our very favourite Brighton acts : Bela Emerson, Jacob’s Stories & Birdengine, a night of troubadours featuring William Elliott Whitmore & Daniel Michaelson (of Absentee) & Fujiya & Miyagi have also finally rescheduled their long overdue instore. Priority tickets for this one will go to those of you who preordered the album way back when & were promised an instore. We will fill up the shop with anyone else on a first come first serve basis on the night. We will also be DJing at the Fortune of War again on the Thursday of this week so pop down for some beers & tunes. Again, for full details of all these events, click on the link at the top.
The bargains will include a whole load of titles available at £4.99 from Monday 13th April, most of which have never been available this cheap before – once they’re gone, they’re gone! They include the most recent albums from Telepathe, Andrew Bird, Joan As Policewoman, The Boy Least Likely To, Martha Wainwright, Crystal Castles, Dan Le Sac & Scroobious Pip, Yeasayer, Rolo Tomassi, Eagles Of Death Metal, Secret Machines & many more. We will also have all 3 albums from The Knife & The Fleet Foxes (single cd) album at just £4.99. There will also be some recent albums available at just £6.99 for a limited time from the 13th. To see the list of bargains we have confirmed so far, click on the link at the top.
A lot of work has gone into preparing this week, so we’d love to see as many of you as possible joining in the celebrations & making the most of what we’ve got lined up for you. We will be open from 9am everyday as usual. The exclusive titles cannot be preordered, so you will need to make the 18th a date in your diary & ensure you make time to come & visit the shop.
Right, did you get all that? Pop in if you have any questions……….
See you soon,
Natasha, Derry, Matt, Sam, Ami, James, Daniel, John, Simon & Calum aka The Residents
