This Week’s instore : Hockey - Monday 1st June @ 6pm (to celebrate the release of their new single ‘Learn To Lose’). Ticket holders only (but if you don’t have a ticket, come down on the night & we will fit you in if we can).

Hello sunblessed people!

Hope you’re not too fried after that scorcher. Annoyingly, we’ve been busy stockchecking all weekend so sadly got to see very little of it. Still, there’s been lots of lovely releases to keep us company, so it’s not all bad. In fact, top of this week’s pile is the new album from the ridiculously flamboyant & colourful Patrick Wolf whose self released ‘The Bachelor’ is a brilliantly eccentric record that makes us (some of us at least!) sooooo damn happy!………Baaba Maal’s been a bit slack in delivering a new album as it’s been 8 years since his last but by God was it worth it! – this one’s a beautiful meeting of West-African rhythms & subtle electronic dance elements – perfect summer music…………..Mark (E) Everett is back with his 7th Eels album & he’s as mesmeric & ragged as ever………..Resident fave Peter Broderick brings us a new album of beautiful string & piano compositions that should appeal to fans of Max Richter or Olafur Arnalds………….Scottish miserablist Malcolm Middleton seems a little lighter-hearted on his new record but there’s still a very necessary dark undercurrent to his songs……….Brighton’s own The Ghost of a Thousand are causing one hell of a stir in the punk-rock scene (achieving the esteemed 5 Ks in Kerrang!), so if you’ve not heard them yet & you’re a fan of The Bronx, Converge, Gallows & the likes of, then it’s about time you checked ‘em out…………..super deck-whizz  DJ Yoda is up to his old party tricks again & this time he’s cutting & pasting in a Country & Western style……..Cass McCombs‘ last record became a bit of a shop favourite once it had sunk into our consciousness & it looks like this one’s going the same way already……….Scotland’s much lauded Broken Records put out their debut having finally settled on a label to sign with (4ad won the war) & if you’re looking for some distinctly Scottish, epic multi-instrumentalism, then this one’s for you……….The Intelligence produce their 4th assault of pop-post-punk laden sun fried hooks – undoubtedly their best work yet……………if you like the darker end of the dubstep spectrum, then check out the cd from Shackleton & Mordant Music that covers off some of their previously vinyl only releases………Mr & Mrs Costello both release albums this week : Diana Krall pays homage to the Brazilian Bossa Nova scene of the 50s & 60s on her new record whilst her hubby, Elvis Costello, continues on his genre exploration & heads into Country for this T-Bone Burnett produced album ……….& if Country’s your thing then you might also want to check out the new albums from Ryan Bingham who has a grimy take on country rock or Eilen Jewell who delivers a lovely balance of strident country & rural balladry……….London rap diva, Speech Debelle releases her debut album which sits somewhere between Lily Allen & Lauryn Hill…….all this & new albums from Holly Throsby, Das Wanderlust, Kap Bambino, Paolo Nutini, Daniel Merriweather, Ohbijou, Sharon Van Etten, Michelle Shocked, Skepta, Cinematic Orchestra, Ganglians & loads more. There’s also a very special, ultra limited (500 worldwide) release from the much in demand Mumford & Sons who have created a beautiful package of a 10″ with 3 exclusive prints by the highly regarded Scottish artist Sophie Milner – get in quick, we only have a very limited amount of these. There are also singles from Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, The Bobby McGees, Cherbourg, Gang Gang Dance, The Joy Formidable, Plugs & many many more. Single of the Week
The Soft Pack – Extinction 10″ EP (Merok)

This week sees the release of the much lauded 3rd album from those trendy Brooklynites Grizzly Bear who have, against all the odds, delivered a pretty spectacular follow up to the masterpiece that is 2006’s ‘Yellow House’ – sublime summery harmonies, lush orchestral flourishes & towering folksy chamber pop like no other band can produce (see above for freebie info)……….the 12 string genius that is James Blackshaw has been gradually growing in popularity & notoriety & with his new record he includes piano, female vocals & string & wind instruments to augment his astonishing compositions…….more quality output from Brooklyn comes in the form of Blank Dogs (aka Mike Sniper) who’s clearly got a bit of a liking for the early output of The Cure (quite right too!) & he’s gradually letting more & more of the melody peek through his brilliant fuzzy murkiness……….a late arrival from last week is the debut from Miles Anthony Benjamin Robinson (he really should think about abbreviating that!) which is a stirring but euphoric effort that calls to mind everything from Micah P. Hinson to Neil Young & Arcade Fire – quite something!……….the mighty fine Tectonic label release their 2nd compilation – Tectonic Plates Vol.2, pulling together their recent 12″s featuring Skream, Benga, Martyn, Flying Lotus, Joker, Pinch & more dubstep luminaries……….. the great new album from France’s Phoenix sounds like what might happen if The Strokes let Studio or Lindstrom produce their next album……….still on the French vibe, the godfather of punk, Iggy Pop, has gone all French & a bit jazzy on his surprising but strong new album………there’s a distinguished album of lo-fi surf folk/space pop from Ducktails – fans of Sun Araw, High Places & Panda Bear take note………Trentemoller has put together an incredible compilation covering everything from his trademark hi-tech dancefloor minimalism through to heartwrenching melodic moments – how can an album that starts with Grouper’s ‘Heavy Water / I’d Rather Be Sleeping’ be anything other than brilliant?……..the 3rd album from Brighton’s talented singer/songwriter Fink sees him working with John Legend & Son Of Dave………fans of the Finders Keepers label should check out the Anagram Jam compilation put together by 2 highly informed musical archivists that you’ll know if you unscramble their names……….if you fancy a set of taut, on the edge pop songs bristling with nervous abandon, then the ace Tyvek album is the one for you………fans of Rune Grammofon’s output (in particular Supersilent) should check out the noisy improv Norwegians, Spunk………Honest Jon’s have delivered yet another gem with Open Strings – 1920s Middle Eastern Recordings, having raided the emi vaults for a dizzying selection of 78s – the vinyl 4LP version is to die for!………..there’s also a host of reissues – the picks of which have to be the deluxe revamping of Beck’s early classic ‘One Foot In The Grave’ & John Martyn’s 1973 landmark album ‘Solid Air’……..all this & new albums from Sir Richard Bishop, Magic Arm, Marilyn Manson, Gary Go, Scott Matthews, A Broken Consort, Simple Minds, Redjetson, Toddla T, Dubterror, Abstract Rude, Terry Callier, Jon Balke, Scott H. Biram, Dave Alvin & many more. Click on the link below to see the full listing.

Single of the Week : Burial & Four Tet – Moth / Wolf Cub
(Text)

After last week’s rather slim pickings, this week has seen us buried in boxes of new releases, so here’s a quick run down of some of our top picks in cae you haven’t got time to read through the complete listing (you  really should read it though – James, Sam & I slogged to get it finished this week!). Top of the pile is the new album from Brooklyn’s heady experimentalists Akron/Family - takes a few listens to work its magic this one but those who stick with it will be greatly rewarded………..if you’d written The Horrors off as some style over substance art-school nonsense (as indeed their previous record company did), then think again – their new album, with the help of Portishead’s Geoff Barrow on production, is a sublime slice of psychedelic, krautrock-inspired brilliance………our final top pick of the week comes from The Black Mountain frontman Steve McBean, who has recorded his fabulous new record as The Pink Mountaintops with a host of top notch special guests (check out his stripped back, acoustic set here on Thursday @ 7)………….the utterly charming Maccabees demonstrate a far wider range of sounds & influences, resulting in a far superior sophomore effort (we’ve got a few signed copies left after the preorders, so be quick if you want one of these!)…………..Annie Clark, aka St.Vincent, has looked to film scores as inspiration for her wonderful 2nd album – a winner for fans of Feist, Andrew Bird or Sufjan Stevens we think………. electroclash trashmouth Peaches is back with more of her harsh beats & filthy mouth aided by Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism, Drums Of Death & Soulwax – feel the quality!……….Hot Chip have put together their contribution to the Bugged Out Mix series which further showcases their immaculate taste……….the 4th album from Scottish singer/songwriter Alasdair Roberts is folkier than ever but it’s a lively affair that contains some of his best melodies yet……..the hypnotically bludgeoning Isis deliver a slow burning future classic……..the ridiculously prolific Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) has made a record with his current touring band The Mystic Village Band – an engaging, multi-textured & colourful effort from the indie-rock icon……….indie-pop darlings The Wave Pictures have enlisted Herman Dune’s Stanley Brinks for horn duties & incorporate lots of lovely guitar finger picking on their 2nd record of warm & fuzzy tunes……….the fierce, all-out, 5 pronged attack that is Gallows deliver more distorted guitar riffs & screaming vocals to great effect………….the 18 year old London songstress who records as Alessi’s Ark has delivered an arresting debut of orchestral pop & sweeping melodies………..the unique talent that is Lhasa has been gathering masses of critical acclaim for her self-titled 3rd album………Miss Kittin & The Hacker finally get around to serving up a 2nd helping of their metallic soul & glamorous space disco………..dubstep’s current leading light Caspa delivers a sure fire party starter of an album……….if you want some mental jazz beats a la Polar Bear or Acoustic Ladyland then check out the new offering from Led Bib……….Paul Curreri’s other half Devon Sproule follows up her much lauded ‘Keep Your Silver Shined’ with another enthralling country / folk record……..if like me, you were bowled over by The War On Drugs album, check out the solo effort from Kurt Vile which is only available on vinyl at the moment but the odd crackle will only serve to enhance this lo-fi beauty…….all this & loads more new albums from the likes of Trembling Bells, Get The Blessing, Fischerspooner, High Contrast, Damian Lazarus, Magik Markers, Hanne Hukkelberg, Double Dagger, The Seal Club Clubbing Club, Florian Hecker, The Black Dog, The Do, Esben & The Witch, Doll & The Kicks,  Bird Names, Burn The Negative, Madina Lake, Esser, The Hospitals, The Paper Chase, Richard Swift  & reissues from The Rolling Stones, The Vaselines, The Deviants, Frankie Paul & Laurel Aitken & singles from Burial & Four Tet (get in extra quick with this one – half already gone on pre-order so it won’t hang around), The Leisure Society, Scout Niblett, Pinch, Poppy & The Jezebels, Ital Tek, Rye Rye, Fanfarlo, We Were Promised Jetpacks & loads more.
