Albums of the Week : White Denim – Fits (Full Time Hobby)

Single of the Week :
Sunn 0))) & Pan Sonic / Alan Vega / Stephen Burroughs – Che / 13 Crosses / 16 Blazin’ Skulls / Goodbye Dear (Blast First Petite)

So here we are, another week, another mailout… they come ’round so damned fast! & this week we have more than a little to tell you. So let’s dive right in…

First off we have two late notice instores to tell you all about.. on tuesday 30th june at 6pm, we will have the hotly tipped Bombay Bicycle Club playing to celebrate the release of their new single ‘Dust On The Ground’.Those of you that pre-order their forthcoming debut album at the instore will get an exclusive limited edition art print. The following week, on monday 6th July at 6pm V. V. Brown will be our guest. This young lady is surely destined for pop stardom & you can say you were there first! Both these events will be ticketed so, as always, ask instore for details on how to get your hands on them.

As you all know, Loop is creeping ever so quietly up on us & the organisers have very kindly given us a pair of weekend tickets – they include entry to Saturday & Sunday day & Loop Late – to give away. All you have to do to have a chance is answer the following question:

Which Loop headliner is known to his family & friends by the name Tom Jenkinson?

Email us the answer to: info@resident-music.com & we will contact the lucky winner(s) this coming wednesday. Good luck!

Right, what was next? Yes! The Stone Roses will be reissuing all their singles week by week on limited edition 7″s from the 6th July. We have been told they will be very limited indeed & so we recommend if you wish to get them you should preorder the lot instore with us. The first will be Elephant Stone & will come in a box to hold the rest. Just swing by, or call us to preorder your copies.

Crazy prog-rockers the Mars Volta release their new album this week & if you purchase the album between Monday & Sunday 5th July you can be entered into a draw for a very nice limited edition framed replica of the inscrutable (as usual) artwork. It could be you deciding whether to put it above your mantel, in the loo, in the dining room, the bedroom…

We would also like to draw your attention to an assortment of bargain roots titles we have in stock. In these infernal credit crunched times we all need a little something for a little bit less & these folk, country, blues & jazz £2.99 titles fit the bill!

So what does that leave us to talk about?…. New releases! Of course & what a fantastic galaxy of releases we have for you this week… White Denim follow up their frankly awesome debut with another concise & to the point confection of styles all played at once & at a gallop & whatever they have assimilated gets thrown back up ready to rock!… Chicagoan post-rockers Tortoise return after what feels a long time all refreshed and ready to blow our minds all over again with their ever more synthesised sound… it’s a week of long overdue returns & next up are Dinosaur Jr who continue to defy the odds by being as great as they ever were… the Gossip get back to basics with the king of strip-it-back, Rick Rubin… Stuart Murdoch takes a little time off from Belle & Sebastian to unveil his new musical project God Help The Girl, ‘a story set to music’. That’d be a musical then, wouldn’t it Stuart?… The mighty Deerhunter continue their hot streak with their fantastic new EP of skewed shoegaze pop confectionary… instore veterans Fanfarlo self release their excellent debut lp & it’s also available in a very lovely extremely limited boxed edition. Arcade Fire fans should take note… Method Man & Redman lay off the reefers long enough to release their 2nd album together, 10 years later!…Honest Jon’s release more nuggets from the EMI vaults on their Congolese comp World Is Shaking Our favourite glass gargling MC, Buck 65, returns with a new collaborative project Bike For Three!…I could go on & on there’s so much good stuff out but I think I may have already! So I’ll just rattle a few more off… there are new albums from Regina Spektor, Jack Penate, Cortney Tidwell, Bibio, Busdriver, Amazing Baby, Future of The Left & the first cd release from local duo Peggy Sue to name but a few more. Albums of the Week :   V/A – The Legends of Benin (Analog Africa)

Single of the Week
Jarvis Cocker – Angela (Rough Trade)

So, onto the new releases………this week’s pick of the pile is the latest release on the undisputably great Analog Africa. With Legends of Benin they continue to trek deeper into Benin to unearth long forgotten afro funk, afro beat & cavacha (? – me neither, but it sounds fantastic). As always this wonderful comp is packaged beautifully & tells you all you need to know about the four featured artists. Essential stuff… If you were taken by the Flying Lotus album or are tickled by Prefuse 73 then the sampledelic 1st release from erstwhile channel 4 sound librarian Paul White will be right up your alley – could well have been our album of the week but we sold them all over the weekend! – expecting more in Tuesday, so reserve your copy now……. our favourite ex-junkie (no not you, Doherty), Lemonheads main man, Evan Dando returns with a suprisingly eclectic set of covers…..our favourite local music collective Wilkommen, who count the Miserable Rich, Sons Of Noel & Adrian & The Leisure Society amongst their number, have released an excellent budget sampler of their stuff…. talking of locals, Fat Cat continue to plunder the Scottish indie scene for unpolished gems & have unearthed We Were Promised Jetpacks. Fans of Frightened Rabbit & The Twilight Sad should take note… the unstoppable Finders Keepers label knock out two, rare as hens teeth, reissues of esoteric & unclassifiable psych-pop sound librarian madness… Loop reissue the final instalment of their back catalogue & remind the young whippersnappers on the primal space-rock scene that they were doing it before they were out of nappies!… the mighty, mighty fine album-of-the-week bestowed Dirty Projectors release said album on a very limited cassette… LTJ Bukem adds another fine mix to the ongoing Fabric series… & on top of all this there are releases from Enter Shikari, Tussle, Spinnerette, Venetian Snares, Kissy Sell Out, The Answering Machine, Cold Cave, The Shitty Limits, Wolf Eyes & singles from our bestest buddy Jarvis Cocker, The Gossip, Depeche Mode & Jack Penate.
