Album of the Week : Japandroids – Post-Nothing (Polyvinyl Record Co)
Single of the Week : Spoon – Got Nuffin‘ (Anti)Â
Gig of the Week : Alela Diane @ The Old Market - Tues 28th JulyÂ
Hello good people of Brighton (& beyond)!
This week’s mailout comes to you from a sickly me, hiding at home, watching Gok’s Fashion Fix (apparently an all black wardrobe is wrong? What are they teaching people these days? Who will be the record shop employees of the future?), trying to resist comparing my symptoms to those of Swine flu on the NHS website! Luckily I’ve had a host of good music here to distract me, which I’m here to tell you all about. So, here goes………….
First up is the highly anticipated album from the Vancouver 2-piece Japandroids whose maximal, distorted garage-rock is contagious, energetic & thrilling enough to earn them poll position in this week’s picks – Derry brought me a copy home last night to cheer me up – the perfect pick me up record………..next up is my personal fave, from the Tokyo trio Nisennenmondai - a pure krauty, math-rocky adrenaline rush of a record……..Dirty Projectors fans should hurry & pick up the limited EP from Angel Deradoorian who finally reveals the first fruit of her solo labours (although she has roped in fellow Projector Dave Longstreth to sit at the controls) – a delightfully serene release that’s got Sam very excited about her debut album proper……..if you like your electronica warm & introspective without being sickly sweet (a la Cathode, Kettel et al), then you should definitely check out James’ top tip from Ochre on the trusty Scottish label Benbecula………….the politically charged John Mclure hooks up with his band of fellow angry young northerners, Reverend & The Makers, for a 2nd offering of their swashbuckling political commentaries……….the Brooklyn ramshackle quartet Forest Fire deliver an engaging set of lo-fi folk americana…………if you fancy a bit of death ambience (who wouldn’t?!), then check out the “lost classic” from On, aka Deathprod, reworking Sylvian Chaveau & Steve Hess – intense but utterly essential………..there’s a surprise winner from Cornershop who make a welcome return with a sunny, upbeat, boundary crossing indie-pop offering that’s been picking up great press across the board………fans of the lighter side of dubstep should check out the album from South London’s Silkie who merges deep house & synth driven soul with the dirty basslines associated with the genre………..we welcome back Mos Def, whose irresistable natural flow & eclectic beats are finally back on form……….hot on the heals of Brighton’s Baby Charles, fellow Brightonian funksters The Impellers give us an album of biting, crisp & brass heavy soul that Craig Charles can’t get enough of………..there are also a host of great reissues released this week from the likes of Crime & City Solution, Hatfield & The North, The Carolyn Hester Coalition & The Nice. All this & new releases from M-Swift, Kyza, Kidkanevil, Alucidnation, Ahab, Martin Stephenson & Helen McCookerybook, Octopus Project & many more besides.
Check out the link below for a complete list of all this week’s album & single releases.
We have managed to secure some excellent deals on some recent releases this week, which means we can add them to out credit crunch busting “Change From A Fiver” section. So, if you fancy picking up the latest releases from The Whitest Boy Alive, Phoenix, Au Revoir Simone, My Latest Novel, Conor Oberst, The Wave Pictures, Ohbijou, Still Flyin’ & more for a ridiculously cheap £4.99, then pop in soon as these will be limited offers.

Albums of the Week : Â We Fell To Earth – We Fell To Earth (In Stereo)
                Dextro – Winded (16k)    Â
            Tara Jane O’Neil – O Ways Away (K Records)
Single of the Week :Â Â Â Â Django Django – Storm (Shadazz)
Hopefully some of you have survived the horizontal rain & biblical skies, as this week’s selection of new releases & tickets is definitely worth braving the weather for. First up, some important news-type things worth mentioning :
- The Dinosaur Jr. show is no longer an early one (doors now 7.30, due to end @ 11pm but there is also now an aftershow party. Who knows, maybe the white haired wizard himself J. Mascis will join in until the early hours (or maybe not).
- There has been a venue change for Good Shoes on August 1st (moving from Audio to the much more intimate Freebutt)
- Magnolia Electric Company on September 3rd now has no support, with doors at 10.15pm &Â MEC on at 10.30, so don’t be late!
Apologies to all of you who were unable to pick up our album of the week for last week, the fantastic ‘Rated O’ by Oneida. This was due to us lot not ordering anywhere near enough & selling out by Monday lunchtime – a record album of the week seller! We are really, really, really sorry. But better news – it’s back in stock at the supplier so we’ll have plenty more back in stock this week! Awesome! It is in fact also a triple cd album, rather than the double cd we stated in last weeks mailout. It’s well worth the wait so don’t miss out now it’s back in stock. Tickets for the show are also selling well so don’t hang about there either.
A couple of deals round these parts worth mentioning also :
- in celebration of her utterly fantastic performance at Loop, Fever Ray’s incredible self titled debut has been reduced to a spectacular £4.99 (& still comes with a bonus disc of remixes). Get in quick – we have limited stock
- We have also reduced a number of vinyl titles that you’ll find in the box under the vinyl racks cunningly labelled “sale vinyl”. Come & check out the bargains……
Now, on to those new releases… Three fantastic albums of the week for you this week….. first up is We Fell to Earth a duo comprised of half of UNKLE & Mark Lanegan’s ex-wife/band member. This fusion of taut electronic kraut & hazy desert psychedelica is utterly mesmerising & should appeal to fans of everyone from Portishead & Massive Attack to Siver Apples…..Secondly we have Dextro – fans of Boards Of Canada & Four Tet should check out this self released album (only available in selected shops) – his take on home-listening electronica creates evocative & ethereal pieces tinged with jazz & post-rock influences…..& finally, the 5th album from the wonderful Tara Jane O’Neil – a truly arresting offering that made its impact on the very first listen – this one should appeal to fans of Nina Nastasia or Jana Hunter………
Other albums worthy of note this week include : Jonsi & Alex, the Sigur Ros main man & partner, whose take on ambient music creates beautiful sonic soundscapes buried beneath analogue crackle and hiss – fans of Library Tapes & Arvo Part take note…….the prolific Jason Molina is back with Magnolia Electric Company who have created a softer and more mournful record than usual as a result of the untimely death of their bassist in 2007…..The Duke and the King feature Simone Felice of the Felice Brothers, who has toned down the hillbilly to craft a record rich in 70s americana…..Nadja & Black Boned Angel have collaborated to create an album which fuses their respective dreamy doom & sharp metallic riffery… Summer Cats lighten the tone with their Slumberland (home of Pains of Being Pure at Heart) debut, full to the brim with garage-pop tunes which lean heavily to the side of pop…..we have the record that launched a million technicolour dreams, or at least the career of Mgmt as their 2005 debut ep finally gets a proper uk release… Tittyshakers Vol. 1 is pretty much given away by its title, filthy rockabilly & sleazy rock n’ roll… a bit of an idm revival this week, first Rival Consoles shows a healthy respect for Richard D. James whilst sounding fresh & modern at the same time……& secondly Jega, the “Stanley Kubrick of idm” is back after an astonishing 9 year gap…..15 Years Fuse brings some techno to the party, some huge names contributing to the celebration of the Belgian club’s big one-five……Lushlife was the man responsible for the infamous Kanye West vs. Beach Boys mashup of a while back & he has now got around to releasing a debut album proper……Soul Jazz’s new off shoot label World Audio Foundation brings us both Carnival Music of Eastern Cuba and Polyphonic Voices of Georgia, showing their commitment to tracking down remarkable music from all corners of the globe…..all this & new music from Kid British, Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople), Hunter Muskett, Legion of Two, Notes to Self & Bill Frisell amongst others.

Album of the Week : Oneida : Rated O (Jagjaguwar)
Single of the Week : Dead Weather : Treat Me Like Your Mother (Columbia)
Competition Time! Looks like this is becoming a bit of a weekly feature. To celebrate the return of both the Black Lips & Crystal Antlers (a lovely double-headlined bill), Melting Vinyl are giving away a pair of tickets for the forthcoming show on 26th August. If you want to win a pair of tickets to this show, all you have to do is come up with a winning anagram (to be decided by us!) from the 2 band names combined.
We also need to tell you about a new weekly indie night called Get Your Rocks Off at the Pav Tav. It launches this Wednesday (15th) & runs from 8 til late. You’ll get 3 bands for just £3 & there are also loads of prizes to be won, including Resident vouchers. For more details, go to www.brightonmusicscene.com.
Hope you’re all recovered from / still enjoying (depending on when you read this) the Loopiness of this weekend. How seriously awesome was Fever Ray?!? I was almost boiling over with excitement at the prospect of seeing the show but I could never have expected anything quite so awesome as we got. It felt like we’d been plunged into the mind of CS Lewis on a really bad trip – some kind of Narnia hellish underworld : unbelievably elaborate costumes, dense smoke, claustrophobic darkness, insane vocal distortion, lazers………we couldn’t have asked for more. Absolutely mind-blowing!
So, onto this week & we’ve got lots of yummy treats instore for you again. We’ve been really strict with ourselves & gone for just 1 album of the week – the absolute standout – which is the 2nd part in the artrock triptych from Brooklyn’s noise-crazed Oneida - it’s an incredible piece of work across 2 discs / 3 vinyls that should appeal to fans of Battles & Acoustic Ladyland……..talking of whom, have a new album out themselves this week so if any of you didn’t already pick up the Acoustic Ladyland album at their spectacular gig on Friday night, you can do so now & you won’t be sorry – if we weren’t being so decisive, this too would have been an album of the week………..Jack White can’t stand still for a second it seems so to satisfy his restlessness he has hooked up with The Kills’ femme fatale Alison Mosshart & Dean Fertita of QOTSA & collectively, as Dead Weather, they have made a thrilling addition to Mr. White’s faultless portfolio……..those of you who squashed into one of our busiest instores ever this week, will already know what an incredible voice the lovely V.V.Brown has & this week sees the release of her wonderfully summery debut……….Speck Mountain’s 2nd album is another beautiful record that should appeal to fans of Mazzy Star & the likes of……..Tavistock’s finest, The Rumblestrips have received a wave of Mark Ronson’s magic wand on their 2nd album………fans of Battles, Hella or Prefuse 73/Savath & Savalas should check out the supergroup Risil that features members of all of the aforementioned on their ace collaboration………Clark’s 5th album is brutal but melodic & possibly his finest work to date – if you pick it up quick, you’ll also get a rather nice print that Warp have made to go with it………..the brilliant Room40 label have released another beautiful ambient record, this time from Chihei Hatakeyama………if you’re into this kind of modern classical loveliness then you should also check out the Danny Norbury album……….if however you like a bit of dark, shadowy menace then check out the William Fowler Collins on the infallible Type label – now on cd & thoroughly murky……or on a similar tip, try the Greg Davis album on another shop favourite label, Kranky……..also on my top tips for this week is the hypnotic, ghostly fuzziness of Blues Control – loving this!………..the album from optical amplifierEdward Sharpe (formerly of Ima Robot) has been lapping up press adoration for a while now – it’s a choral psychedelic folk rock extravaganza………..all this & new albums from the likes of Deastro, Lights, 6 Day Riot, Alexander Turnquist, Ear Pwr, Dan Black, Duke Garwood, Ras G, Black Joe Lewis & many many more. We’ve also got lots of vinyl goodness filling the racks this week from Lucky Dragons, Moon Duo (Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips), Let’s Wrestle (very limited copies of their debut), Low Anthem, Earth, Pelican, Richard Skelton, Samandtheplants & more. For details on all these & everything else released this week, check out the full new release listing link below.
