Album of the Week Willard Grant Conspiracy – Paper Covers Stone (Loose)

Single of the WeekThe Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Come Saturday / Side Ponytail (Fortuna Pop)

It’s another busy week for releases, so here’s a quick run down of what’s hot : Top of the pile is  charismatic beardy Robert Fisher with his loose-knit folk-noir confederation Willard Grant Conspiracy whose new record sounds like Mark Lanegan doing acoustic Bob Mould – how could you go wrong?……….the delightful Noah & the Whale return with a surprisingly more melancholic offering but it’s another winner – fans of Iron & Wine or Beck’s ‘Sea Change’ may not have thought to check them out before but the change of direction means this could be one for you too………Resident faves The Dodos return with their 3rd dose of folk-pop wizardry that shows of their musicianship to great effect………Sweden’s Little Dragon return with another slice of airy electronic dream pop akin to their homies the Knife……….Italians Do It Better fans will be glad to know the Nite Jewel album has finally got a proper UK release – if the idea of Grouper going disco floats your boat, then check this out……….co-inciding with her appearance in the shop this week (Monday, 6pm – see above), the new album from Brighton’s disarming Kate Walsh arrives………….Jack White’s bestest buddie Brendan Benson returns with his 4th solo album of Beatles inspired hook filled alt.pop/rock songs………..Iceland’s neo-classical export Olafur Arnalds makes his contribution to the “7 songs series” (7 songs recorded in 7 days) – a beautiful set of short, mainly piano based compositions for fans of Max Richter or Eric Satie………..finger-picking genius Jack Rose hooks up with the Black Twig Pickers for a heavier, raucous, rockin’ set……..Jim O’Rourke is back with his 1st album in 8 years – a warm, beautiful & engrossing listen that shakes off his “avant garde” tag……….following their energetic, “revealing” & sweaty performance at the Engine Room last week, Israel’s mental Monotonix deliver their new album……….there’s a gorgeous double album from Caethua which should appeal to fans of Cat Power or early psych folk………….Wisconsin’s Cougar make “emergency rock” that sounds like a melting pot of Errors, Tortoise, Four Tet & Fugazi……..Patrick Wolf’s wonderful ‘The Bachelor’ finally gets a limited vinyl release……….there’s a heap of reissues, most notably from Radiohead (the next batch of the deluxe reissues) & Daniel Johnston (a few, finally getting UK reissues)………..we’ve received the next batch of Third Man Records (Jack White’s label) 7″s including one from the man himself – all stupidly limited imports, so don’t miss out…………all this & new records from Deadstring Brothers, The Black Crowes, Wye Oak, The Elephants, Still Life Still, Just Jack, Necro Deathmort, Masters Of Reality, The Used, Marconi Union, Amanda Blank, Shantel & loads more – check out the link at the top for a full listing.

Other things to tell you about this week :

  • We have finally received the Fat Cat label samplers that we should have been giving out to anyone who purchased an album from the label (Nina Nastasia, Twilight Sad, Frightened Rabbit, Hauschka, Max Richter……) so if you have missed out (or indeed if you just fancy getting yourself a free copy of a sampler from the ace local label), just ask us for one
  • We have also finally received our campaign stock from Warp so you can, as promised weeks ago, now get your hands on loads of their titles for just £6.99 (Grizzly Bear, Boards of Canada, Autechre, Broadcast, Aphex Twin, Jamie Lidell……)
  • This month’s Uncut magazine has a free psych-rock cd on the front which is one of the best compilations we have heard for ages – it’s more than worth the cover price & features lots of our current faves including Sun Araw, Ganglians, White Denim, Six Organs of Admittance, Sleepy Sun, Deradoorian & more. Bargain!
  • If you are going to see either the Fiery Furnaces, Stanton Warriors or Magnolia Electric Company then please check out the attached tickets listing link for details about  times, date & venue changes.

Albums of the WeekNurses – Apple’s Acre (Dead Oceans)
Sleeping States – In The Gardens of The North (Bella Union)

Single of the WeekWoods – To Clean (Handmade Records)

Forthcoming Instores : Kate Walsh (acoustic set) – Monday 31st August @ 6pm

                                           Thomas Dybdahl – Tues 15th Sept @ 6pm

Hello everyone,
It’s that time of the week again when we bombard you with new release, tickets & other useful (or not) info to brighten your Monday morning (or Sunday evening depending on how speedily this has made its way to you) . Any which way, let’s get to it………..

Firstly we’d like to thank The XX & all of you who patiently waited to see them on Thursday. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we did. The album’s been one of our best “off the deck” sellers for ages & we’re all hooked on it, so we were chuffed to bits to have them here, despite them arriving a little ill-equipped (to say the least!). Still , they got themselves sorted in the end, played a fab set & were lovely people to boot, so all was forgiven in a flash. If you are lucky enough to have a ticket for the Vampire Weekend show this week then get there early to catch The XX supporting & if not, they are playing their own show at the Freebutt in October but it’s selling fast already, so don’t hang about.

Right then, onto the releases………which this week are headed up by 2 corkers – 1 from Portland’s Nurses, whose euphoric yet dreamy psychedelic off-kilter pop should defintely appeal to fans of Yeasayer or Sunset Rubdown & the 2nd is from Bristol’s Sleeping States – an utterly beguiling listen that fans of Grizzly Bear or the Low Anthem would do well to check out………..Icelandic eccentric pop maestros Mum make a very welcome return & being back on the Morr Music label, they have come up with a suitably crafted set of folk tinged electronica & expansive pop………….Arctic Monkeys return with their 3rd album & it turns out to be a winner! Sam here, for one, is rather enjoying their Josh Homme ramped up effort, so it looks like there’s plenty of life left in these cold loving primates yet (the 1st person to buy the album will receive the 1 promotional printed bag of humbugs that we got in the post this morning)…………..from the much loved round these parts Kranky stable, comes the Nudge album that’s been getting regular play on my iPod recently – definitely one for fans of Valet (one of last year’s best releases on the same label) & it features said outfit’s Honey Owens too………The Fall deliver some more live action, this time from the gig that saw off the Hammersmith Palais in style in 2007 – an historic event for an historic venue……..musical siblings The Fiery Furnaces have stripped back & simplified their sound (as much as these 2 are ever going to, let’s face it) & deliver a vital record as a result……….following a rave Pitchfork review we got a flurry of enquiries about an album from the elusive JJ on Sincerely Yours, so the label have kindly shipped us some – only a limited number on import but if you enjoyed the Air France album, check this out – it’s a real grower………the much blogged about Solid Gold album has been made available early through a handful of selected indies on the back of the hype, so if you like the Junior Boys’ doleful disco, pop in & check this out………it’s a big week for Scandi releases – 2 of the biggest coming from Denmarks’ indie-dream-pop-rockers Mew & also Sweden’s The Who & The Kinks indebted The Soundtrack Of Our Lives………..current 4/4 raving whizzkid Zomby releases his follow up to last year’s much lauded ‘Where Were You In 92?’ (one of John’s favourites) & for a limited time only, you can pick it up for a bargain £6.99……..all this & new records from Fruit Bats, Imogen Heap, Pete Molinari, Dinosaur Pile Up, Athlete, Lovelikefire, The Hat, Neil Landstrumm, Felix Da Housecat, Watermelon Slim, Woodpecker Wooliams, Willie Nelson & more & new vinyl from the likes of Peter Broderick (ultra limited), Om, Caretaker, New Order, The XX, Passion Pit & more. Albums of the Week : The XX – XX (Young Turks/XL)

Jay Reatard – Watch Me Fall (Matador)

Single of the Week :
Nodzzz – True to Life / Good Times Crowd 7″ (What’s Your Rupture?)

This Week’s Instore : The XX – Thursday 20th August 6pm (to celebrate the release of their excellent debut album – this should be a very special instore.) more details here.
Forthcoming Instores : Thomas Dybdahl – Tuesday 15th September 6pm (hotly tipped Norwegian singer-songwriter who delivers timely, worldly music – a superstar in his homeland & set to be one here too soon)Hey there!
Pretty bumper week for new releases this week, & two amazing albums sharing the top spot.  First up is the eagerly anticipated debut from The XX, who have if anything exceeded expectations with this beautifully icy, minimal take on pop.  Don’t forget to come to the instore on thursday, wouldn’t want you to have to kick yourself now, would we?… Our second album of the week is brought to us by Jay Reatard who has honed his pop songcraft even further since the matador singles of last year, without losing the biting edge that characterises his earlier work. Susanna & Magical Orchestra returns, with a sparse, hypnotic beauty sure to please fans of Kate Bush or Bat For Lashes… Rainbow Arabia bring a heavy dose of tribal rhythms to their melting pot of influences, leading to some describing them as ‘arabian rave’. Gang Gang Dance fans will find a lot to love here. This album isn’t officially out until November, we have got our hands on some exclusive advance copies!… Beth Jeans Houghton has been described as joining the dots between Gwen Stefani & Vashti Bunyan, & her debut is a fine showcase for her modern take on rootsy folk… Soulsavers thread together soul, gospel, rock, jazz & country with a top set of singers, including Mark Lanegan, Richard Hawley, Mike Patton, Will Oldham & more… Simian Mobile Disco return with a finely polished album of pop anthems, featuring a host of big name guests… Squarepusher is back with a display of virtuoso solo bass guitar, using great technique to tease remarkable sounds out of his instrument… Toddla T brings us a fabriclive mix, a breathless, brash mix that travels from dancehall to funky to dubstep in the blink of an eye… Cave Singers return with a beguiling rich, folky stew that’ll suck you into their autumnal haze… Lovvers finally release their debut full length (last year’s ‘Think’, at 13 minutes long, is probably pushing the definition of full length a little bit) & its a triumph of garage pop songwriting & snotty punk snarl (comes with a free, rather pornographic tote bag whilst stocks last)… The Smith Westerns finally release their debut on cd, & it is a stunning take on sloppy teenage punk which takes inspiration from the outer fringes of rock n’ roll’s vast wealth of influences…Pissed Jeans return with their greatest album yet, sounding like ‘In Utero’ era Nirvana covering 80s hardcore… all of this & more new releases from Calvin Harris, Gaslamp Killer, Sore Eros, Mariachi el Bronx (The Bronx), Tinchy Stryder, Theoretical Girl, Sam Carter, Richard ThompsonAudision, Naphta, Throw me the Statue, Joshua Radin, Dave Cloud, The Branded, Jeff Healey, Loudon Wainwright III, Richmond Fontaine, Screaming Blue Messiahs, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Rod Stewart & loads more. xx instore august 20th 6pm

Posted in Instore Appearances at 7:00 pm by derry

to celebrate the release of their self titled debut album, hotly tipped london 4-piece the xx will be playing instore.

having spent their youth at london’s elliott school (fellow alumni: four tet, burial & hot chip) obsessively tinkering with instruments in the music room, the xx then went on to sign a deal & self-produce their album in their record company’s back office. fronted by boy/girl combo romy madley croft & oliver sim, they craft languid, sparsely arranged love songs that recall atmospheric 80’s acts such as the cocteau twins & mazzy star. better still, they betray their south london roots: gentle, plaintive melodies are framed by minimal beats that nod to dubstep & r&b.

the album’s already receiving tons of rave press, so come & check out what all the fuss is about…………

Album of the Week : LJ Kruzer : Manhood & Electronics (uncharted audio)

Single of the Week
: Male Bonding / Cold Pumas : Split 7″
(faux discx)

Onto new releases…our album of the week this week is from LJ Kruzer, whose take on melodic electronic music utilises piano, ambience and synth drones to construct an intricate and subtle beauty – very lovely indeed…… Wild Beasts return with a record that vastly improves on their debut – Hayden Thorpe’s remarkable falsetto being supplemented with great songcrafting & infuriatingly catchy tunes… Julian Plenti is the alter ego of Interpol’s Paul Banks & he has created a record of depth & complexity that perhaps would not have been possible with his “other” band… Frankmusik brings us his debut, fizzing with high-energy, pop and frantic digital beats… Shit & Shine return with a ridiculously loud, brutal and weird album, which crushes and disconcerts without taking itself too seriously… Yim Yames (aka My Morning Jacket’s Jim James - some people are just lazy with their pseudonyms) brings us a beautiful ep of George Harrison covers… Harvestman brilliantly fuse old & new with a brilliant hazy psych-folk for fans of Wooden Shjips & Six Organs of Admittance… Lightning Dust is another side project from those epically prolific Black Mountain sorts, heavy on the cosmic and tinged with folk & doom…Acidmothersguruguru brings together psych heavyweights from Acid Mothers Temple & Guru Guru (as you could probably guess from the name) to create first class power-psychedelica… Grizzly Bear reissue their long out of print debut ‘Horn of Plenty’, so anyone who has fallen in love with the incredible ‘Veckatimest’ or ‘Yellow House’ can see where it all began… Ze 30 is the story of Ze records,an influential & revered label which brought post-punk &d disco clashing together…The Girls Are At It Again is a brilliant compilation of previously forgotton recordings from the 1960s uk beat girl scene, which have thankfully been saved from obscurity… MSTRKRFT return with more party starting bangers solely preoccupied with sex & booze. Guaranteed to get the party started…. Antoni Maiovvi brings us his soundtrack to a nonexistent 1983 italian sci-fi film involving utopian moons of jupiter, organised crime, future disco superstars and a secret ancient order which controls the entire universe. hell. yes…. Robert Henke brings us a limited piece of glacially shifting soundscapes, which evolves and shifts gradually… our single of the week is the Male Bonding / Cold Pumas split 7″ – Cold Pumas are one of  the best bands in Brighton right now, go and check out their pulsating metronomic take on Liars/Health/Ex Models/Abe Vigoda at the earliest oppurtunity!  All this & releases from The Twang, The Most Serene Republic,The Steadfast Shepherd, Street Sweeper Social Club,Lucky Elephant, Rec.tangle, Portugal. the Man, Pansonic/Haino Keiji, The Herbaliser Band, Disjokke, Juice Aleem & and many, many more!
