Greetings one & all!Well the good ship Resident is buckling under the weight of exotic musical bounties this week – as ever this time of year is normally rich pickings & this September is certainly no exception! To start with, we have 4 superb Albums Of The Week (on a week like this, we really couldn’y be forced to whittle it down to just 1 & even restraining it to 4 proved to be very tricky)….Anyway, first off TV On The Radio’s Kip Malone steps up with his own side project Rain Machine – taking the influences of TVOTR (namely blues, gospel, 60’s jazz & African music) Malone brings them to the fore culminating in a dense, uplifting musical experience that easily lives up to his day job…..Heather Woods Broderick (yep, sister of Peter!) upholds the Broderick family name with a rich & resonant record that could easily be a companion to Peter’s masterpiece ‘Home’ – anyone who saw her perform with Peter the other week will already know how gorgeous her voice is………on a very different tip, celebrated French cat Joakim delivers a pretty insane record that covers trippy psychedelia, Goblin-styled drama-funk fuzz, krautrock & acid house on one mind-bending disc – my personal fave this week…back in 2007, Vic Chesnutt hooked up with A Silver Mt Zion & a bunch of others & delivered one of the year’s most devastating albums & now he’s back with the old crew for his new album, which is by turns intense & intimate & we’re loving it………..phew! albums of the week out of the way we’ve got all this coming your way too…….Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon brings us post-rock, Reich-esque minimalism, folktronica & the odd droney shape with his Volcano Choirproject……..Richard Hawley brings us an atmospheric masterpiece with his new album, using all manner of strange old instruments this is a dark but very rewarding listen…

ever wondered what kind of record Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, Jim James & M.Ward might make if locked down in a studio together? Wonder no more! Monsters Of Folk is just that & is a brilliant record that far surpasses their recent individual efforts & Sam’s loving it…..the mighty Om are back with more dirge-like heavy sludge & slow building moodiness……..Micah P. Hinson delivers a considered collection of cover songs on his new effort…..Nick Cave & Warren Ellis have compiled a selection of their soundtrack work onto 2 essential discs….Times New Viking come up with the goods on their most raucously joyous album yet…old psych! new psych! psych psych! it’s The Amorphous Androgynous’ new comp & it’s brain-meltingly awesome!! – the last one has become a regular fixture on the stereo here & this one looks set to do the same……..Nat’s pick of the week comes from A Sunny Day In Glasgow who deliver a delicious slice of joyous Cocteau Twins-meets-Animal-Collective bliss……..Rhino mine L.A. for their excellent new Nuggets box set… Basement Jaxx are back with more Jaxx-style dance bangers…Dizzee Rascal gets us in a spin with his new bonkers effort…all this and so much more including Pearl Jam, Fryars, Yacht, Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band, Gong, Mika, Harmonia & Eno, Part Chimp, To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie, Blk Jks, Herve & the Jan Garbarek Group plus another heap of re-issues fromthe likes of  Harmonia & Eno, Ian Hunter, Black Sabbath, Big Star, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Cult & Gary Numan. Health – Get Color (City Slang) comes with free bonus disc & badge set

Single of the Week : Thom Yorke – All For The Best
limited 7″ (The Mezzotint Label)

Hope you’ve all had a splendid week. Here in the Resident basement we have been wading our way through seemingly endless boxes of stock to bring you the biggest new release week we’ve had for ages – we’ve had trouble getting it all out in our little shop – poor thing is bursting at the seams. So, here’s a quick run down of the highlights from the mountain of new albums we’ve got instore for you this week : Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls are back with another mighty fine instalment of their unique brand of indie-punk-pop – a more subtle & less immediate album but as Daniel says, it’s “an incredible album”…………so too is the 2nd album of noise/dance fusion from Health whose gloriously asymmetrical offering comes with a free bonus disc & badge set if you get in quick……………big news this week is the release of the highly anticipated debut from the 4AD signed The Big Pink who we’ve had a massive soft spot for since their debut single ‘Too Young To Love’ came out nearly a year ago – we’ve got free posters of the beautiful album artwork to give away with the album (the indies only double LP comes out a week later)…………Battles’ frizzy haired frontman Tyondai Braxton puts out his 2nd solo album – a guitars/vocals/percussion/electronics based 21st century orchestral set……………the new album from David Sylvian is stuck on a broken down lorry apparently but is due in Monday/Tuesday & if you’re liking his more avant garde direction, this is an absolute treat………….on a similar tip, the meeting of the great minds of Christian Fennesz & Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous makes for a glitchy, spacey, mesmerising beauty………the mercury nominated Rachel Unthank has beefed up her band & released her much lauded new album as The Unthanks, an impressive record of Steve Reich-esque composition, west coast harmonies & modern folk that Paul Morley has claimed he will be listening to “at least forever”………..the unstoppable Muse are back with an even more massive slice of their monster riffing, stadium filling, space rock…….2 hip hop legends release their new records this week : Q-Tip’s “lost jazz funk odyssey” from 2001 finally gets a proper release & Jay-Z comes out of retirement (again), to put the world to rights & put his followers back in their place………Dr.Alex Paterson & co. aka The Orb, serve up their 3rd volume in the Orbsessions series……….LCD Soundsystem’s Nike workout ‘45:33′ gets the remix treatment………Flaming Lips fans should check out the Pink Floyd-inspired psychedelic offering from Wayne Coyne’s nephew & friends, operating under the name of Stardeath & White Dwarfs………fans of Black Devil Disco Club will delight in the flawless collection of the early work of Bernard Fevre, his original name before he adopted the disco pseudonym………there’s a great slice of modern folk served up by Scotland’s Withered Hand……….Mary Ann Hobbs presents Wild Angels is an essential document of where the leftfield dancefloor is at right now…………if you were lucky enough to catch the ever incredible Peter Broderick at Audio this week, you’ll recall him talking about a cd release of a collection of early work ‘4 track songs’ which arrived in store this week, along with the reissue of his modern classic, ‘Home’, which has now been augmented with a disc of unreleased material & alternate versions………..there’s a stack of other brilliant reissues again this week including essential works from The Feelies (see Matt’s recommended picks), Townes Van Zandt, Big Star, Julian Cope, John Coltrane, The Durutti Column & many more. Album of the Week :  A Mountain Of One – Institute Of Joy (Ten Worlds Records)

Single of the WeekKode 9 / Flying Lotus / Black Chow –
Hyperdub 5.1 EP very limited 12″  (Hyperdub)

Welcome to your weekly update on what’s new for us Residents this week. First up – new albums………this week sees the release of the highly anticipated album proper from A Mountain Of One – an outfit who have completely split the Resident camp with their releases to date – I passionately hated their ‘Collected Works’ & Sam had an allergic reaction to it but Matt & James made us suffer it regardless – now though, it’s all changed round – Matt & James don’t get it & I’m swallowing my previously harsh words & going out on a limb & putting their new offering on the top spot as now, their Talk Talk / Roxy Music / Pink Floyd / Fleetwood Mac inspired psychedelic zig zagging makes perfect sense to me………….Yo La Tengo are back with another all-over-the-map-but-somehow-hangs-together-perfectly addition to their catalogue (the limited cd & lp bundles of this album that come with the live lp are delayed at customs but we can take preorders if you want to ensure you get one)…….the Wakefield born brotherly trio The Cribs hook up with Johnny Marr to bring some real finesse to their ever-maturing indie rock – free badges with this one while they last………Cockney boy Jamie T finally returns with the follow up to his Mercury nominated debut & earns himself an Observer Music Monthly 5/5 review………….Vladislav Delay has made a move over to the Leaf Label, joined forces with the extraordinary Scottish composer Craig Armstrong & as such, delivers one of his warmest, most organic records to date – the perfect balance of disturbing & enchanting……….if you like your electronica ever so slightly beatier, check out the new lush, melodic ambient offering from Lawrence………..Scotland’s The Pastels & Tenniscoats from Japan have joined hands for a gorgeous release that sounds much as you would expect from this dreamy pairing……….by complete contrast, the 2nd album from The Victorian English Gentlemens Club is a ballsy, gutteral, scuzzy, gritty affair that is far superior to their debut – a stunner……….the 3rd official album from Mount Eerie merges the dreamwave electronics of David Lynch or Angelo Badalamenti soundtracks with sounds from the edges of the ambient, black metal world – intense!……….the epic, krauty, driving instrumental rock of Vowels should be one for fans of Fuck Buttons, Battles or Boredoms…………..hotly tipped The Antlers release their beautiful, ambient but anthemic record – if you’re going to the now sold out Passion Pit show on Monday, then get their early to see them supporting, along with the fabulous Esben & The Witch…….there’s a heap of great reissues from the likes of Eno & Cluster, SRC, Blades of Grass & Damon & Naomi……..the Bat For Lashes album has been given an extra disc of material to bolster the already incredible Mercury nominated album but for the most of important reissues of all, you’ll have to wait until Wednesday when The Beatles catalogue in its newly remastered glory finally gets released – all the albums are available individually but there are also limited box set versions available both in Mono (for the purist) & Stereo. For a complete list of all the new releases this week, click on the link at the bottom.

Other bits ‘n’ pieces for you :

  • there are a fair few new additions to the Change From A Fiver selection instore including the new albums from The Maccabees & Yeah Yeah Yeahs, so grab em while they’re the bargain price of £4.99!
