Howdy Y’All,
A hefty set of releases this week but as so many of you have taken the mickey out of our Album of the Week stand when it has more than 1 album on it, we have been very disciplined, had a vote & picked the one that stood out from the pile. So, first up this week is the immense new record from the Aussie born Iceland inhabitant Ben Frost, whose 2nd album is this year’s most mind-blowing event – it’s an eerie, dense record that sits somewhere between Murcof’s more recent output & Sunno))) – not to everyone’s taste no doubt but we’re loving it……..Derry’s other pick of the week is the new album from the ex-Auteur Luke Haines – he’s back on top form & what’s not to love about glam rock sarcasm (it’s available here a week early as a special treat)…….we’re really loving the new work from Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, who spearheads the outfit BEAK> & delivers a superb album of psychedelia, shoegaze, krautrock & electronica……..James’ other pick of the week comes from Warp’s Hudson Mohawke who excited us earlier in the year with their limited EP & now return with a full-sized helping of their forward thinking, genre defying beat wizardry……..the space age pop collagists Broadcast & The Focus Group (aka Julian House, their sleeve designer & Ghost Box mainstay) join forces in a mini album collaboration that makes good (very good in fact) on their joint obsession with library music & film scores…….the now-not-so-hairy hippy Devendra Banhart returns with a sunny, breezy, laid back record that sees him ready to win our hearts again…….the Pavement loving Cymbals Eat Guitars have finally got a uk release for their massively blogged about epic debut that’s bound to appear on many end of year lists……..also finally available in the UK is the Miike Snow album – a Swedish / American trio who plough the same fertile ground as Passion Pit, Empire Of The Sun et al……..if you can possibly imagine a meeting between Errors, Dan Deacon & Dat Politics & you’ll have a vague idea of what fab album from Gyratory System sounds like – fans of the 1st Metronomy album might want to check this one out ………if you like your instrumental post rock / metal but have found it all a bit run of the mill lately, the new album from Russian Circles is bucking the trend & freshens the genre up nicely……..all this & new albums from Port O’Brien, Espers, Tegan & Sara, Langhorne Slim, Wolfmother, Richard Youngs, Johnny Foreigner, Felix, Get Back Guinozzi!, The Moi Non Plus, Hearts No Static, Port-Royal, Saint Jude’s Infirmary, Emptyset, Boo Hewerdine, Julie Fowlis, Show Of Hands, Pink Martini & many more. To see the complete list of this week’s new releases, click on the link at the bottom. In other news this week :
- the limited edition of the Florence & The Machine has been repressed in another limited run so it’s available again for a short while if you missed out 1st time round
- the box set version of the debut Bad Lieutenant has only been available through the band’s website until now but we have some instore for a limited time, at a slightly cheaper price. It contains the cd album, double lp, an exclusive 7″, booklet & art print) – a true collectors’ item
- if you haven’t yet been in to check out Greg Neate’s Transitional Spaces photography exhibition, then it is still adorning our wall & if you want to see more of his work, especially his fab photos of local artists, check out his website at www.neatephotos.com
- also worth checking out is the newly set up Brighton based online magazine dedicated to music. Electric Grapevine brings you gigs, reviews, bands & more. It’s still evolving but check out the site at www.electricgrapevine.co.uk to see what they’re up to
- also new, on-line & based in Brighton is great new music reviews website Bowlegs. They are clearly into a lot of the same stuff as us & they’re working hard to build up the site fast, so keep up to date with what’s hot & what’s not in music at www.bowlegs.co.uk
- Just to confirm, the 2ManyDJs gig is completely, totally & utterly SOLD OUT!

Hello to you all, especially those of you who have recently moved to this fine city to “study”!It seems there were some nasty little gremlins in our system last week that managed to blank our mailout – but only for some of you.(???) We can’t fathom out why that is but if it ever happens again, go to www.resident-music.com/news, where you will find all the info. So, onto this week’s hopefully completely visible news………there were so many genuinely special albums this week that we’ve struggled to decide what should sit in the AOTW spot & in the end, whittled it down to an acceptable amount (after some in-fighting, rank pulling & sulking). So, 1st up is the 2nd album from the Fisher Price-enhanced Bristol duo Fuck Buttons who have ramped up the rave element on their 2nd offering & have gone more Orbital than Growing – impossible to resist & guaranteed to get you dancing…….Brooklyn’s A Place To Bury Strangers are also on album number 2 & they too have ramped it up with a full on, intensely paced, apocalyptic take on their Jesus & Mary Chain / MBV / The Cure influences – awesome!………Ninja Tune reveal their darkest offering yet from King Cannibal – a filthy, grimy, dystopian The Bug-like affair that’ll cast terror upon the dancefloor……..The Flaming Lips are back & this time they’ve decided to ditch the technicolour glory & have instead indulged themselves in an 18 track psychedelic-spacey-prog-rock exploration, stripped back & buried beneath a layer of distortion – it’s incredible………other amazing offerings this week come from Thrill Jockey’s Mountains who release their 2nd album for 2009 as a limited edition, individually sleeved, vinyl only piece of understated but totally engaging gorgeousness……..fans of Dead Can Dance should check out the new album from Piano Magic that features Brendan Perry & Peter Ulrich from said band – it’s a wonderfully haunting & beautifully orchestrated record……..the new album from Keith Wood’s Hush Arbors features Dinosaur Jr’s J.Mascis for a brilliant american rock / avant folk / roots workout……the prolific Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie releases both a new album & a companion piece EP – glistening dream pop of the highest order……the new Ghostbox release comes from Broadcast’s Roj (Stevens) – it’ll definitely please fans of The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Rune Grammofon weirdness or the esoteric bits of Broadcast…….another favourite this week comes from Miasmah’s Simon Scott whose record of shimmering walls of sound, ethereal tones & slow-building drone should be one for fans of Fennesz, Tim Hecker et al……….the Warp 20 boxset has finally arrived – what a weighty, glorious thing it is! – very limited too, so get in quick if you fancy treating yourself……….Matt’s loving the Shackleton release which sees him breaking free of the dubstep (er…) shackles & embrace a more berlin vibe than before – one of the best electronic releases this year (in on vinyl now & coming very soon on cd)…….the insouciantly cool Pains of Being Pure At Heart put out an EP of all new material – more sparkling nuggets of 24-carat warm & fuzzy pop………Chicago’s Califone embrace a greater variety of styles than ever & showcase Tim Rutli’s exquisitely forlorn vocals & the band’s rethinking of americana: one for fans of everyone from Beck to Will Oldham or CSN……..other biggies this week come from the newly synth laden Editors – not so much Joy Division-esque as Depeche Mode-y & Gary Numan-oid – but hey, that’s no bad thing…….talking of Joy Division-esque – the album from Bernard Sumner, Phil Cunningham & Jake Evans as Bad Lieutenant is released this week…….we’ve given up waiting for a UK release date for the new Built To Spill & got some in from overseas – they’re still producing some of the most beguiling indie-rock……all this & new albums from Echo & the Bunnymen, Cate Le Bon, Midaircondo, The Young Republic, Acid Mothers Temple, Sondre Lerche, Thee Oh Sees, Baroness, People Under The Stairs & Tord Gustavsen Ensemble & another huge heap of reissues from Kraftwerk, David Bowie, King Crimson, Sunny Day Real Estate & more, all remastered. To see the complete rundown of this week’s new releases, click on the link at the bottom.
Other bits n piece to tell you about this week :
- COMPETITION TIME – We have a pair of free tickets to give away for the forthcoming DALEK show at Audio on Monday 19th October supported by This Heat’s Charles Hayward & Action Beat. To win this pair of tickets all you have to do is tell us with which iconic character James Marshall (aka Dalek) made a name for himself in the art world. Email your answer to : info@resident-music.com
- We appear to have printed the day for the Daniel Johnston / Laura Marling gig incorrectly on our poster at some point so if you are going to this show, please note that the date is Sunday 1st November.
- The De La Warr Pavilion have just released the last remaning tickets for the Kings Of Convenience show this Tuesday. They are balcony seats. This is the only show the Norwegian duo are playing in the South East, outside of London & it’s in a beautiful venue so don’t miss this one.
- We’d like to thank all the bands who performed this week’s instores & all of you who attended. It’s been a hectic week for them (with 2 more to come this week) but we hope you enjoyed the intimate performances. We do have a Mumford & Sons giant signed poster to give away after their show here, so we’ll be in touch with those of you who preordered the album soon to tell you how you could win this.

Album of the Week : The Black Heart Procession – Six (Temporary Residence)
Single of the Week : Cold Pumas – Jela EP limited 12″ (Hungry For Power) go here for a highly entertaining promo for this release : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMRn0UbF-KQ
So, are you ready for this week’s run down of what’s hot in the musical world? Righto – off we go……first up we have the fabulous 6th album from The Black Heart Procession – an utterly compelling set of moody, gothic songs that should appeal to fans of Nick Cave or Soulsavers……..there were a few other hot contenders for album of the week including the equally dark hearted new album from Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista – Derry’s loving this album of complex improv / noise / post-industrial / post-punk seduction……there’s also the stunning new offering on Type from Ramsees III – a shimmeringly beautiful set of pastoral drone-folk – if you digged Mountain’s ‘Choral’ earlier this year or are hankering after new Stars Of The Lid material, this is a must for you…….on a similarish tip, the new Kranky release from Ethernet offers up some gorgeously spacial, immersive Gas-like atmospherics – mmmmmm……….also in this realm, the new Preservation release from Aaron Martin bowled me over with darkly compelling, mainly cello compositions in the vein of Nick Cave & Warren Ellis’ soundtrack work or Hildur Gudnadottir……..& another essential release if this area of music does it for you, will be James’ top tip – the very limited double slab of wax from Leyland Kirby (aka The Caretaker) who delivers a deeply mesmerising sequence of music designed to overwhelm & absorb………however, if you like your sounds a bit more lo-fi & murky, Daniel recommends snapping up the new releases from Sacred Bones – the Gary War album has been hailed by The Wire as “a complete rethink of the premises of pop writing” – thick, synth-heavy psychedelia of the highest order……..& the Zola Jesus album offers up incredible sparse industrial rhythms, no-fi drones & ethereal femme vocals…………if you’re looking for something more uplifting check out the long awaited & enchanting debut of folk/bluegrass from Mumford & Sons (you can see them perform live in the shop on Tuesday @ 6) ……..another one to lift your spirits is the re-release of The Leisure Society’s debut which now comes with a bonus disc of extra material (& a signed poster too if you get in quick) – you can also check them out live in the shop on Wednsday 14th at 6………other big albums this week come from John Darnielle’s extraordinary The Mountain Goats…….cult hero Daniel Johnston delivers a fully realised, professionally produced album but fortunately retains the requisite air of chaos we’ve come to love…………Joni Wolf & the gang are back with a new Why? record that unfurls in lush waves of americana & pop-infused psych folk (& yes, we’ve finally moved Why? out of the Hip Hop section!)…….dubsteppers rejoice – Hyperdub have treated us to a truly heavyweight 2cd 5 year retrospective package – not just a nostalgia trip as there’s a brand new, exclusive Burial track, unreleased material from Kode 9 & much more besides……if you want something more chilled, check out the new Air album – an assured addition to their cannon of work & Mixmag are claiming they’re “back to their best”……..Scotland’s The Twilight Sad build on their ever-increasing popularity with an album of devastating guitar noise albeit with a slightly increased pop sensibility……….there’s a new Soundway comp that’s getting some heavy rotation on the Resident stereo – Tumbele is an ace collection of 60s & 70s Afro & Latin sounds…….Wooden Shjips fans take note – the new Moon Duo ep (Ripley Johnson’s alter ego) is awesome – a limited vinyl only release – gotta have it!………..all this & new albums from Kurt Vile, Lou Barlow, Vic Chesnutt & Jonathan Richman, Raveonettes, Boys Noize, Deadmau5, The Holloways, Kill It Kid, Early Day Miners, The Shaky Hands, The Heavy, Epic45, Chimes & Bells, Jonny Trunk, Polvo, Cerys Matthews, Idlewild, The Slits, Castanets, Mission Of Burma, Down To The Bone, Empirical, Roseanne Cash & loads more & there’s a heap of reissues from the likes of Jesus Lizard, Tee & Cara, Blo, Hawkwind, Pere Ubu, Close Lobsters, Chrome & more & we’ve also, finally, got the most recent Alice Russell album back in stock – there’s a remix disc available separately now too.
