Album of the Week : King Midas Sound – Waiting For You (Hyperdub)
Single of the Week : Papercuts – White Are The Waves limited 7″, non album track (Gnomonsong)
Well we’re getting closer & closer to Christmas & the new releases are supposedly drying up but looking around me right now, that is simply not true! Heading up the quality releases this week is the new album by King Midas Sound aka Kevin Martin (who you may be more familiar with as The Bug) & Roger Robinson (featured on The Bug’s ‘London Zoo’). As with that project he draws his inspiration from dub & dancehall but this is an altogether more dark & atmospheric ride & though it may have been too late to be included in our end of year lists, it could still end up being one of the albums of the year… Aussie trio The Necks return with another expansive single track of “post-everything” wonder… Type come up trumps once again with the the new album by Zelienople that gains favourable comparisons with Talk Talk, Slowdive & Bohren und der Club of Gore amongst others… Tom Waits may have lost a Nanny but we have gained the bewitching voice of Jesca Hoop……the big news this week is that Nurse With Wound return with a new full length album costing a credit-crunch busting 99p! At the request of the band, it is only available in record shops (no mail order at all) so, if you are a fan or if you haven’t yet checked out these industrial/ambient/drone legends, you’ll need to get off yer bum, into the shop with a quid & make the most of the band’s ridiculous generosity…….Hackney’s very own Bass Clef returns with his 2nd album of “dubstep (not dubstep)” with freshly injected African percussion & copious amounts of joy & of course, bass… Norway’s disco overlord, Lindstrom, returns accompanied by Christabelle & while stocks there is an additional disc with his festive forty minute take on “Little Drummer Boy”… Peter Broderick & Machinefabriek hook up for a collection of beautiful, intuitive soundscapes… Jason Spaceman has seen fit to remaster his masterpiece: Spiritualized’s “Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space”… All of this & more from Johnny Flynn, Mark E Smith & Ed Blaney, Peverelist, Pinch, Steve Reid, Yasmin Levy, Wet Dog, Royal Bangs, MV & EE & much more besides. Here are our Top 25 picks of 2009. We have, as always, struggled to whittle down the immense amount of awesome releases we have been treated to this year into a bite size “best of” but the votes are in & the results are below. To see individual staff lists see the post below.
Prices start at just £4.99 & all are competitively priced, so there’s no excuse for not indulging yourself.
As you can see, we have some pretty snazzy freebies to give away with most of our Top 10 but they are limited (some more than others) so get in quick if you want the bonus stuff. There are exclusive bonus discs for The XX (due to arrive Tues so hang tight), Fever Ray (a fab mix disc), the Pains Of Being Pure at Heart (4 very special tracks & some of their best work), Health (15 minutes of Health improvisational magic) & the 1st handful of people to buy the Yo La Tengo album will get a free copy of the vinyl only Adventureland LP – a ridiculously generous freebie – not sure what came over us!
Enjoy!

Gig of the Week : Danny Schmidt & Carrie Elkin @ The Albert – Thursday 26th November
This is a farewell gig for the fabulous Gilded Palace of Sin promotions, as Shaun has sadly decided to call it a day. It would be great if we could help him go out in style (& copious amounts of alcohol) by making this a packed out show.
Now then……..competition time! Up for grabs this week are two tickets to Chali 2na on December 1st at Audio. Rumour has it that Mr 2na has been playing Jurassic 5 material on this tour, so it’ll be an evening you will not want to miss. All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is email us the answer to the following question……”Which British MC appears with Chali 2na on the song ‘Revolution 5′ from his debut mixtape ‘Welcome the Fish Market’?” Email us your answer to info@resident-music.com by Friday 27th November 6pm sharp to be in with a chance of winning. Good luck!

Album of the Week : Tom Waits – Glitter & Doom (Anti)
                    Â
Single of the Week : Four Tet – Love Cry (Joy Orbison Remix) limited 12″ (Domino)
This week we have been busy compiling our end of year lists – the results will be with you later in the week, when you can read all about what’s carried us Residents through 2009.
Â
In the meantime, the new releases are still coming thick and fast, as Christmas grows ever closer (our Christmas decorations are going up as i type this and are looking very nice too!). Our album of the week this week is Tom Waits‘ new live spectacular ‘Glitter and Doom’. It’s a fitting testament to his incredible sold out 2008 tour of the same name & also features a whole disc of his inimitable storytelling. The first few copies come with a rather lovely poster, so get your skates on if you want one! Also new this week, we have the debut album from Real Estate, whose mesmerising and atmospheric sun dappled take on classic US indie will definitely help you forget what it looks like outside right now……Twinkranes bring us some spectacular Irish kraut, infusing their prog and krautrock influences with a slight pop edge…..Dave Rawlings is more usually found in Old Crow Medicine Show or collaborating with Gillian Welch but his debut solo album as Dave Rawlings Machine is very assured, thoroughly accomplished and shows his deep knowledge of authentic country music…..the solo album from Olöf Arnalds (formerly of Mum), finally gets a UK release – her intimate and evocative solo album is definitely one for fans of Joanna Newsom or Vashti Bunyan……Sole is one of the godfathers of abstract hip hop and co-founder of the famed Anticon label and his new, reflective album contains more mangled beats and surreal rhymes, packed with wit and dense lyricism… Black To Comm continues Type’s recent run of great releases, with a spectacular album which has moved away from his usual organic drone, to a sound rooted in world music, techno, noise, avant-garde & ambient music… Osso bring us a unique take on Sufjan Stevens’ 2001electronic concept album ‘Enjoy Your Rabbit’, transforming it into something more closely resembling contemporary avant-garde classical music… Soul Jazz records deliver Steppas’ Delight 2, another foray into the world of half-step beats and heavy basslines. Featuring all the heavy hitters and the most important tracks, this is an essential compilation for any fan of the ever-broadening dubstep scene…..a busy week for Soul Jazz, as we also have Freedom, Rhythm and Sound, a companion to the book of the same name, charting the revolutionary jazz that was being produced in the 1960s……Where Will You Be Christmas Day? is not your usual Christmas album (thank God) but a brilliant compilation of vintage Christmas songs from 1917 to 1959, featuring the likes of Lightning Hopkins, Leadbelly & Bessie Smith – a marvellous antidote to the commercialised Christmas of today… All of this and yet more, with more new records from Supersilent, September Collective, Pyramids with Nadja, The Real Tuesday Weld, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Turbo Fruits (ex Be Your Own Pet), Gay Against You, Underworld, Para, Julien Dyne, Edan, Soulive, Soul Harmonics & a rather special Miles Davis box set.
