Album of the Week : Joanna Newsom : Have One On Me – 3cd / 3lp (Drag City)
What were the chances of Ms.Newsom topping ‘Ys’? What were the chances of her doing it with a triple album? Well, she’s only gone & done it! Yes ladies & gentlemen, you can believe the 5/5 Uncut review, the 5/5 Mojo review, the 9.2/10 Pitchfork review etc because the harp plucking siren has delivered in a big way! This 2 hour extravagant, colourful masterpiece is everything you could want from the squeaky one & so much more. Exquisite!

Single of the Week
: Beach Fossils : Daydream / Desert Sand (limited 7″)
(Captured Tracks)
Jangly sun-drenched riffs, kaleidoscopic rhythms & all round lovely haziness saturate Beach Fossils’ 1st release. Yes, we know it’s another Captured Tracks one – we just can’t help ourselves!

This Week’s Instores :
Tunng – Monday 1st March @
6pm – ticket holders only. Acoustic album release show.
Tickets have all gone now. You could try your luck on the door, in case any ticket holders don’t turn up or you could buy / win tickets to the Concorde show (see below).

Husky Rescue – Thursday 4th March @ 6pm - we didn’t ticket this one so just turn up. Their show on the same day is pretty much sold out now. This will be a stripped back, intimate acoustic set from the Finns. We are big fans of the band & love their Scandi-dream-pop – perfect to draw in the Spring. Come & see for yourself………

Hello out there!
So then, as you can tell, we’re pretty damn excited about having a new record from Joanna Newsom to warm these wet wintry days. Aside from her record though, there are some other cracking releases this week that come in the form of Archie Bronson Outfit – the Scottish blues psych visionaries have rather unexpectedly reworked their sound on a record that’s bursting with warped inventiveness & once I got my head round it, I can’t get enough of it……………Tunng’s 4th record sees them lose a member but gain a fuller sound than ever on their poppiest outing yet, packed with big choruses & joyful tunes………the extraordinary Seb Rochford-lead experimental avant-jazzers Polar Bear return with album number 4 & they remain as impressive & affecting as ever………post-electro/post-rock Mogwai signings Errors have picked up the pace somewhat on their 2nd full length – now we get Holy Fuck meets Explosions In The Sky meets Daft Punk euphoria!……..more Scottish excitement this week comes from Fat Cat’s Frightened Rabbit, whose 3rd full album looks set to propel them into the big time……..Brighton’s noisemongers Laura-Mary Carter & Steven Ansell, aka Blood Red Shoes, are back with another hefty slice of gutsy, raw & intense rock……..Groove Armada are back & they are exploring a darker side to their chilled-future-pop-disco – fresh vibes from the good ship groove………award-winning folk singer-songwriter Chris Wood adds another future classic to his acclaimed catalogue to date – one for fans of The Imagined Village (of whom he was/is a member)……..this year’s much lauded popstress, Ellie Goulding, releases her ultra modern, electro-pop infused debut……..all this & brand new albums from The Ruby Suns, Babybird, Seabear, Electric President, So So Modern, Aaron Martin, Two Door Cinema Club (comes with a bonus disc here), El Goodo, Alphabeat, Emma Pollock, Bomb The Bass, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Skeletons (aka Nostalgia 77) & loads more besides, including a whole heap of classic 5 cd bargain priced reissues . Gig of the Week : Dextro / Lost Idol @ The Albert Monday 1st March
Dextro’s ‘Winded’ album has had much airtime on the Resident stereo since it’s release & it flies off the deck everytime. Much like fellow Scots Boards of Canada, his music is pastoral & melancholic but his blurry landscapes also enter jazzier post-rock terrain. Support comes from Lost Idol (aka Resident James) – another record that flies off the deck everytime we play it. You may have caught his much talked about show supporting Fujiya & Miyagi recently – now his electronic krauty grooves will warm up this top night out.

On the tickets front, this is quite possibly the most mental week we’ve ever had for ticket deliveries so pay attention – here’s just a selection of what we’ve had in the week (you’ll need to check out the link at the top for the full listing) : The Strange Boys (unsurprisingly already selling well), Deerhunter (they never fail to thrill!), The Unthanks (this’ll be special in the church), Doll & The Kicks (gig’s this week!), Health (hell yeah!), Tim Hecker (down the front, sitting on the floor, gazing up in wonderment – that’ll be me!), Kate Nash (virtually all gone already), Johann Johannsson with a string quartet (tiny gig – don’t miss out), Joy Orbison, Caspa, Primary 1, Electric Six, Damon & Naomi, Neil Cowley Trio, Tenebrous Liar, Thomas Truax, Wolves In The Throneroom, Wolf Eyes, Secret Affair, Everything Everything / Lyrebirds, Royal Bangs, Doctors Orders & oh so many more are now on sale. Remember, you can book tickets by phone if you can’t make it into the shop – some of these shows will sell out very quickly so don’t miss out. You can either collect them from here at a later date or from the venue on the night (in most cases). Simples!

Album of the Week : Ali Farka Toure & Toumani Diabate : Ali & Toumani (World Circuit)
These incredible 2005 sessions brought together the pairing of these 2 African music legends for a 2nd time & offer us a reminder of what a powerful musical force Ali Farke Toure was & how much we Residents love Toumani Diabate (having pretty much played his 2008 ‘The Mande Variations’ to death!). You don’t need to be a world music aficionado to enjoy this record – soothing & quiet but brimming with life, it is a calm but intense experience that is utterly mesmeric.

Single of the Week
: Archie Bronson Outfit : Shark’s Tooth (7″)
(Domino)
The excellent ABO return, taking another bold step into the unknown, based in tradition but manipulated into totally new forms. ‘Shark’s Tooth’ is a warped slice of psych-rock Egyptian space disco produced by the DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy that offers up a tiny taster of the direction the band are exploring on their new psych-rock extravaganza of an album, ‘Coconut’.

Forthcoming Instores : Tunng – Monday 1st March @ 6pm – ticket holders only                                                           Husky Rescue – Thursday 4th March @ 6pm

Greetings one & all!

Well last week Sam banged on about Field Music & guess what? I’m about to do exactly that too. Anyone who came down to their instore performance last Friday can’t fail to have been blown away – it was an awesome affair & one of the best we’ve seen in a good while. So if you did make it, thanks for coming & supporting, the Brewis Brothers were verily chuffed! Big apologies to those of you who couldn’t get in, our little shop was bursting at the seams. The volume of the PA should have ensured you could at least hear the fabulous soundsfrom within, whilst hanging out in the cold we hope.

So to business & this week there’s some great records vying for your attention. The Ali Farke Toure & Toumani Diabate album is our top pick this week, more about that above!…Efterklang are back & continue their exploration of previously unexplored territory. Fans of Talk Talk, Mum, Blue Nile & Owen Pallett will love their new direction…Johnny Cash makes one last goodbye with the final instalment of his American Recordings album series, every bit as good as previous volumes…we played it upfront in the shop last week & now you can get your hands on the Marina & The Diamonds album – a hot tip for domination in 2010!!…Toro Y Moi have featured on pretty much every “one’s to watch” list for this year -   their post-club, blissed out slow-burning landscapes can’t fail to impress…Strange Boys serve up a scuzzy, disharmonious & utterly vibrant racket on their excellent debut that’s got our Daniel & Matt all excited…Nat’s tip this week is the amazing Loscil record – being on Kranky you’ll probably know what to expect, but if Stars Of The Lid, Tim Hecker & Pan American float your boat then you can’t miss this…Following her recent appearance in Brighton at the Nick Drake tribute show, we’ve had a lot of you asking about Krystle Warren – good news is her debut is out now & effortlessly links jazz, blues, folk & funk…I’m a big North Sea Radio Orchestra fan! If you are too, check out the new Arch Garrison record by NSRO founder Craig Fortnam, ’tis lovely…Another record I’m loving this week is the Dakota Suite ‘reinterpretations’ – with Peter Broderick, Tape, Jacaszek & Hauschka on board this is neo-classicalism at its finest…The Soundway label continue their Nigerian Special series, this time exploring the Afrobeat scene that sprung up in the wake of Fela Kuti’s explosive 1st afrobeat records. Needless to say, this has got Sam written all over it…Other bits this week includes new albums from Kathryn Williams, Kath Bloom, Cluster, Baby Dee, The Courteeners, Tom McRae & Brian Jonestown Massacre along with reissues from Black Sabbath, Dennis Wilson, James Blackshaw & EPMD.

Album of the Week : Field Music: Field Music (Measure) - 2cd / very limited double LP plus cd (Memphis Industries)
At last, they’re back. After a prolonged hiatus the Brewis brothers return with an album at least twice as long as all their previous records. We always did hanker for more & now we’ve got it! They are truly one of the uk’s finest & this ambitious record has something for everyone. A precious gem.

Single of the Week
: Esben & the Witch : Lucie, At The Precipice – limited 7″
(Too Pure)
Gorgeously haunting, slow building, siouxsie inspired “nightmare pop”. The 1st official release (following the self-released ep & split dance to the radio 12″) from Brighton’s hotly tipped (& rightly so) 3 piece who have been bubbling under for a while now & are ready to brim over the cauldron’s edge. this year’s the xx?

This Week’s Playback : Marina & The Diamonds ‘The Family Jewels’ – Tuesday 16th February @ 6pm
Hear the album in full here, in advance, with a “refreshment”! Preorder the album & you’ll get a poster & sticker & you’ll be in with a chance of winning a limited Marina & The Diamonds baseball shirt.

This Week’s Instore : Field Music – Friday 19th February @ 6pm
Can’t tell you how much we’re looking forward to this. Field Music return to Brighton to celebrate the release of their fantastic new album. They haven’t got a show down here, so this will be your only chance to see this wonderful band in Brighton. Their instore as The Week That Was was one of my highlights of 2008 & this should prove to be no different.

Forthcoming Instores : Tunng – Monday 1st March @ 6pm – ticket holders only
Husky Rescue – Thursday 4th March @ 6pm

Hello everyone.

It is yet another week of great, great music & it’s getting to the point where we’re having trouble keeping up but we’re trying our darndest. Quite apart from the opportunity to tell you how great the new Field Music album is one last time, there is the new record from Shearwater. ‘The Golden Archipelago’ is the final panel in their triptych on the natural world is perhaps their finest record to to date… There is also the new album from Peter Gabriel. He has undergone a little bit of a rehabilitation in the cool stakes what with Vampire Weekend name checking him & the diverse likes of Field Music (them again) & Yeasayer naming his influence on them. This new record justifies all the love he has been getting. It is a quite wonderful set of covers of the likes of Arcade Fire, Neil Young & Bon Iver that frames the material with just an orchestra & his inimitable vocals. Spellbinding stuff…. Lightspeed Champion returns with his sophomore record. Dev Hynes has traded in those americana threads to record a baroque pop record that is “Woody Allen singing Rufus Wainwright with glee” according to NME… That Voice of the Seven Woods guy is a slippery character. For his new album he is now Voice of the Seven Thunders & that is perhaps a reflection on the music as it whips up a storm  of progressive psych rock. Great stuff!… sadly Jack rose passed away late last year but not before recording ‘Luck In The Valley’. It goes to show this american primitive guitar player was right at the top of his game & his is a tragic loss… Clipd Beaks 3rd album delivers on their potential. It is a wonderfully expansive work that draws water from the same well as Royal Trux, TV On The Radio, This Heat & Liars.A murky & intense beauty…. while we wait impatiently on Wooden Shjips next record we can cling tight to the new Moon Duo record which is Eric Johnson of the Shjips & Sanae Yamada. It’s an interstellar jam full of repetitive riffs. Bit of a busman’s holiday then but no complaints from us!…. Did we mention our very own James Dean’s Lost Idol record yet? No? James has very generously given us copies of his new album 2 weeks up front so we advise you to swing by & pick it up if you like Four Tet, Boards of Canada, Caribou or Dextro. It really is a great record & no, he didn’t pay me to say that (he insisted he wouldn’t stoop so low). It also comes with an exclusive free bonus ep… We have all these releases plus the new Xiu Xiu record, Owl City, the Midlake super deluxe box, Gui Boratto, the next two volumes of Ethiopiques (24 & 25), the next installment from the world psychedelic label “Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas“, Justin Adams, the next in Madlib’s medicine show series, Oh No’s new record plus singles from Hot Chip, Dum Dum Girls, Los Campesinos & oh so much more. To see the complete listing of all new releases, click on the link below.

We would like to let those of you who are after the Massive Attack album on vinyl know that its release has been pushed back to at least 1st March & possibly later as they want to take their time getting the fancy packaging right. It is extremely limited so we recommend pre-ordering it if you haven’t already. Just give us a call, email or do it the old fashion way & come in the shop.

Right, I think that is about it. See you down the front at Orchestre Poly-Rythmo… Ooh, did I mention the great new record by Field Music yet?…

Have a good week all,

Sam & The Residents (Nat, Derry, Matt, James, Daniel, John, Simon & Liv)

Gig of the Week : Oumou Sangare / Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou / Kalahari Surfers – Friday 19th Feb @ The Dome
We’re very excited about this one! Oumou Sangare has a formidable live reputation & is considered one of the jewels of Malian music but really for us it’s all about Poly-Rythmo. This is their 1st tour of the uk & it comes only 45 years after they formed. They tore up the Barbican in September last year & we’re sure they’ll do it again on Friday. Voodoo afro funk with few, if any, equals.

Tickets wise we have had the usual wheelbarrowful of arrivals including those for a gig to benefit the Haiti Earthquake Appeal which has a juicy local line-up including Fujiya & Miyagi, Los Albertos, Transformer & Midfield General. We have also had tickets for The Fall, Phenomenal Handclap Band, Vitalic, Hayseed Dixie, Femi Kuti, Coco Rosie, Devotion, the new saviour of Hip Hop, Erykah Badu’s boyfriend Jay Electronica & plenty more besides. Silver Mount Zion tickets continue to fly out as do a whole bunch of others, so remember not to hang about if you really want to go to a show. The full tickets listing is on the link below.
