Like Roy Orbison reimagined as a rollicking, snakeskin-booted Mazzy Star, our favourite Montreal outfit return with a blinding single from their brand new album (out 8th March). We’re so glad to have them back!

Hello everyone,
Hope you’ve all had a lovely week & that you’re ready for your fill of all that’s good in the music world. It’s another darn big release week we’re being treated to. Aside from Thee Silver Mt. Zion’s epic release, there’s the spectacular 80’s synth-pop extravaganza from Yeasayer that sees the band head in a somewhat dancier direction whilst retaining plenty of the strange & playful elements – comes with a free double sided print if you get in quick……..another “massive” album this week from the originators of the “trip hop” scene, Massive Attack – 3d has managed to drag Daddy G back into the fold & their 5th album really benefits from the chemistry between them & the host of quality guests……….Alan Sparhawk of shop faves Low started a side project a couple of years back that lets him release his demons & boy are we glad he didn’t keep them hidden away coz Retribution Gospel Choir are a seriously powerful, visceral trio who deliver distorted dirges & riff-heavy power-pop of the highest order………..everyone’s going crazy for the new album from the legendary proto-rap pioneer Gil Scott-Heron, whose 1st studio album in 16 years is being hailed as a triumphant return……..if you like your beats minimal but glitchy & sunny rather than icy, then check out the new Pantha Du Prince album……..there’s an ace new Finders Keepers comp of mindblowing Persian pop/funk/psyche called Pomegranates…………Madlib fans will want to check out the new Stones Throw release from Strong Arm Steady as he’s provided a stack of new beats for them……..Mercury nominated Fionn Regan is back with a set of more ragged, more bluesy tunes that are bursting with ideas…….if you’re one for haunting, psyche-fuzz-folk a la Grouper, check out the fabulous new Inca Ore release……..& if dark, fuzzy experimental synth drones a la Lichens are your thing, then Infinite Body comes highly recommended……….all this & new albums from The Album Leaf, Oh No Ono, Clare & The Reasons, Get Well Soon, Throats, Blueneck, The Watson Twins, Alison Moorer, Salif Keita, Hayseed Dixie & more & there are also tons of new singles out this week including The Besnard Lakes, Nice Nice, Babe Rainbow, Field Music, Dirty Projectors (very limited 7″), Hurts, Les Cox (Sportifs) & some more Third Man 7″s for those of you collecting them too. Just a quick reminder that the Tues 9th Feb is the closing date for voting for your favourite indie on the www.indierecordshop.org website. Just go to the Competitions section to vote & 1 lucky voter will win 2 tickets to the Brits. We’d obviously love to win “the nation’s favourite indie competition” so please vote for us!

We’ve got a quick competition for you as well. We’ve been enjoying the lo-fi garage-y brilliance of The Soft Pack’s debut on our stereo this week & this Sunday 14th Feb sees them visit the Freebutt to promote said album. They are as fab live as they are on record, so if you want to win a pair of tickets to see them for free, all you have to do is answer the following question :
Which iconic landmark did The Soft Pack drummer Brian Hill plot to blow up in his previous band?
Email your answer to info@resident-music.com by Thursday 5pm & we’ll pick a winner at random. The winner will be notified by email so keep an eye on your inbox.

Over & out………
Natasha & the Residents (Derry, Matt, Sam, James, Daniel, John, Simon & Liv)
