Album of the Week : Liars : Sisterworld – limited deluxe 2cd / standard cd (Mute)
Liars 5th record is perhaps their most audacious yet bringing together the many facets of their sound for an art pop record that is a thrill from top to bottom. If you can imagine a nightmarish meeting point between TV on The Radio, Beck, Suicide & The Birthday Party, that takes place on an eerie, post apocalyptic night, you’ll get a feel for this all enveloping, slighty threatening but utterly exhilarating ride.

Single of the Week
:
Gaggle : I Hear Flies (limited 7″) (Transgressive)
Debut single from the 20 strong all female choir Gaggle. Led by Deborah Coughlin, the girls unleash chaotic chants of “I’m a drunk” over dark, dubby industrial-strength beats. It’s an original, raucous, chaotic noise which is irresistible & a whole lot of fun. “the most exciting, innovative & genuinely imaginitive force at large in music right now” – NME.

Hello out there!
So it is yet another week chock-full of releases to satisfy every possible musical whim you may want to satisfy. At the top of the list is the long-time-coming new record by Liars mentioned above but that is far from all that will keep us busy this week. The Knife return with their most ambitious record to date – an opera about Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species”. A brother & sister couldn’t possibly tackle this on their own so they roped in Planning To Rock & Mt. Sims & the result is an exquisite, daring & expansive record… Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett return with the latest Gorillaz album & the great & good – Snoop Dogg, Mark E Smith, Bobby Womack etc – have once again queued up for cameos. It is a concept record about how we’re ruining the planet but the important thing is it is loaded to the gills with pop tunes!… Montreal’s Besnard Lakes return & they have served up an epic post-prog behemoth of an album. Their last was a firm favourite round these parts & this one looks to be no different… On some downtime from The Shins, frontman James Mercer has hooked up with Dangermouse & they have called themselves Broken Bells. The results aren’t a million miles from The Shins but we say if it ain’t broke….. Now I don’t know if you have heard but this little heard US alt-rock band Pavement have reformed for some shows & their label Domino has put together a “Best of” quick sharp. If you haven’t got any of this highly influential ( & just plain great) band’s records then this is the perfect entry point. Matt here has it all but still needs the “Best of” (I know, what a fanboy)…. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club return this week & it seems they have recaptured the rock & roll spirit of their debut & married it to the americana of “Howl”. It’s nice to have them back… As improbable as it may seem, Jimi Hendrix returns this week with a ‘brand new’ album, very limited single & a comprehensive reissue of the rest of his catalogue. If you don’t have any of this stuff then do yourself a favour – the man was a true one off… While we wait eagerly for the new Flying Lotus we can sate our appetite with the new record by Gonjasufi on Warp. Flying Lotus alongside Gaslamp Killer helps produce this awesome psych-bass (yeah, i made it up) oddity. If you like Fly Lo’ & Gaslamp & you are partial to a little Finders Keepers this one is for you… It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this weeks Nigeria Special Volume 2 on Soundway is the last in the label’s series exploring 60s & 70s Nigerian goodness. The good news it is yet another impeccably compiled release & it’s sure to never venture far from my turntable for at least a few months… If that isn’t enough West African gold for your liking then be sure to pick up Afro Rock Vol. 1 on Strut. It is yet another set of pearls & as always highly recommended!… It’s been a little while since Bossa Nova royalty Bebel Gilberto has put out a record but this week is the week! It is a beguiling set that has production from Mark Ronson, the Dust Brothers & another member of Bossa royalty Daniel Jobim, amongst others. Beyond these records there are new releases from Sa Dingding, The Kissaway Trail, The Chieftains & Ry Cooder, New Young Pony Club, Duke Special,Titus Andronicus & singles from Tindersticks, Veronica Falls, Fanfarlo & oh so much more. To see the full list of this week’s releases, click on the link at the bottom.

And one last thing before we go… Now, we’re sure you have all heard about the proposed closure of BBC 6Music & the BBC Asian Network. We would like to direct you to a petition objecting to their closure here:
6 Music & Asian Network Petition. The more people that make their feelings known the better. It would be a crying shame if either of these stations had to close as both offer a unique service. Obviously from our perspective we’re sadder to see 6Music and its many great DJs, Marc Riley, Jarvis Cocker, Adam & Joe, Craig Charles etc being shown the door as they have collectively turned us on to a slew of great artists & offered great exposure to a number of our favourite undervalued acts such as Field Music. But both stations will leave a huge hole & we should all make our objections heard. Please sign the petition & if you wish to add more contact the BBC Trust via their website here & BBC Complaints here.

Right, that will probably do for another week. Have a good one.

Album of the Week : Joanna Newsom : Have One On Me – 3cd / 3lp (Drag City)
What were the chances of Ms.Newsom topping ‘Ys’? What were the chances of her doing it with a triple album? Well, she’s only gone & done it! Yes ladies & gentlemen, you can believe the 5/5 Uncut review, the 5/5 Mojo review, the 9.2/10 Pitchfork review etc because the harp plucking siren has delivered in a big way! This 2 hour extravagant, colourful masterpiece is everything you could want from the squeaky one & so much more. Exquisite!

Single of the Week
: Beach Fossils : Daydream / Desert Sand (limited 7″)
(Captured Tracks)
Jangly sun-drenched riffs, kaleidoscopic rhythms & all round lovely haziness saturate Beach Fossils’ 1st release. Yes, we know it’s another Captured Tracks one – we just can’t help ourselves!

This will be a stripped back, intimate acoustic set from the Finns. We are big fans of the band & love their Scandi-dream-pop – perfect to draw in the Spring. Come & see for yourself………

Hello out there!
So then, as you can tell, we’re pretty damn excited about having a new record from Joanna Newsom to warm these wet wintry days. Aside from her record though, there are some other cracking releases this week that come in the form of Archie Bronson Outfit – the Scottish blues psych visionaries have rather unexpectedly reworked their sound on a record that’s bursting with warped inventiveness & once I got my head round it, I can’t get enough of it……………Tunng’s 4th record sees them lose a member but gain a fuller sound than ever on their poppiest outing yet, packed with big choruses & joyful tunes………the extraordinary Seb Rochford-lead experimental avant-jazzers Polar Bear return with album number 4 & they remain as impressive & affecting as ever………post-electro/post-rock Mogwai signings Errors have picked up the pace somewhat on their 2nd full length – now we get Holy Fuck meets Explosions In The Sky meets Daft Punk euphoria!……..more Scottish excitement this week comes from Fat Cat’s Frightened Rabbit, whose 3rd full album looks set to propel them into the big time……..Brighton’s noisemongers Laura-Mary Carter & Steven Ansell, aka Blood Red Shoes, are back with another hefty slice of gutsy, raw & intense rock……..Groove Armada are back & they are exploring a darker side to their chilled-future-pop-disco – fresh vibes from the good ship groove………award-winning folk singer-songwriter Chris Wood adds another future classic to his acclaimed catalogue to date – one for fans of The Imagined Village (of whom he was/is a member)……..this year’s much lauded popstress, Ellie Goulding, releases her ultra modern, electro-pop infused debut……..all this & brand new albums from The Ruby Suns, Babybird, Seabear, Electric President, So So Modern, Aaron Martin, Two Door Cinema Club (comes with a bonus disc here), El Goodo, Alphabeat, Emma Pollock, Bomb The Bass, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Skeletons (aka Nostalgia 77) & loads more besides, including a whole heap of classic 5 cd bargain priced reissues . Album of the Week : Ali Farka Toure & Toumani Diabate : Ali & Toumani (World Circuit)
These incredible 2005 sessions brought together the pairing of these 2 African music legends for a 2nd time & offer us a reminder of what a powerful musical force Ali Farke Toure was & how much we Residents love Toumani Diabate (having pretty much played his 2008 ‘The Mande Variations’ to death!). You don’t need to be a world music aficionado to enjoy this record – soothing & quiet but brimming with life, it is a calm but intense experience that is utterly mesmeric.

Single of the Week
: Archie Bronson Outfit : Shark’s Tooth (7″)
(Domino)
The excellent ABO return, taking another bold step into the unknown, based in tradition but manipulated into totally new forms. ‘Shark’s Tooth’ is a warped slice of psych-rock Egyptian space disco produced by the DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy that offers up a tiny taster of the direction the band are exploring on their new psych-rock extravaganza of an album, ‘Coconut’.

Greetings one & all!

Well last week Sam banged on about Field Music & guess what? I’m about to do exactly that too. Anyone who came down to their instore performance last Friday can’t fail to have been blown away – it was an awesome affair & one of the best we’ve seen in a good while. So if you did make it, thanks for coming & supporting, the Brewis Brothers were verily chuffed! Big apologies to those of you who couldn’t get in, our little shop was bursting at the seams. The volume of the PA should have ensured you could at least hear the fabulous soundsfrom within, whilst hanging out in the cold we hope.

So to business & this week there’s some great records vying for your attention. The Ali Farke Toure & Toumani Diabate album is our top pick this week, more about that above!…Efterklang are back & continue their exploration of previously unexplored territory. Fans of Talk Talk, Mum, Blue Nile & Owen Pallett will love their new direction…Johnny Cash makes one last goodbye with the final instalment of his American Recordings album series, every bit as good as previous volumes…we played it upfront in the shop last week & now you can get your hands on the Marina & The Diamonds album – a hot tip for domination in 2010!!…Toro Y Moi have featured on pretty much every “one’s to watch” list for this year -   their post-club, blissed out slow-burning landscapes can’t fail to impress…Strange Boys serve up a scuzzy, disharmonious & utterly vibrant racket on their excellent debut that’s got our Daniel & Matt all excited…Nat’s tip this week is the amazing Loscil record – being on Kranky you’ll probably know what to expect, but if Stars Of The Lid, Tim Hecker & Pan American float your boat then you can’t miss this…Following her recent appearance in Brighton at the Nick Drake tribute show, we’ve had a lot of you asking about Krystle Warren – good news is her debut is out now & effortlessly links jazz, blues, folk & funk…I’m a big North Sea Radio Orchestra fan! If you are too, check out the new Arch Garrison record by NSRO founder Craig Fortnam, ’tis lovely…Another record I’m loving this week is the Dakota Suite ‘reinterpretations’ – with Peter Broderick, Tape, Jacaszek & Hauschka on board this is neo-classicalism at its finest…The Soundway label continue their Nigerian Special series, this time exploring the Afrobeat scene that sprung up in the wake of Fela Kuti’s explosive 1st afrobeat records. Needless to say, this has got Sam written all over it…Other bits this week includes new albums from Kathryn Williams, Kath Bloom, Cluster, Baby Dee, The Courteeners, Tom McRae & Brian Jonestown Massacre along with reissues from Black Sabbath, Dennis Wilson, James Blackshaw & EPMD.

Album of the Week : Field Music: Field Music (Measure) - 2cd / very limited double LP plus cd (Memphis Industries)
At last, they’re back. After a prolonged hiatus the Brewis brothers return with an album at least twice as long as all their previous records. We always did hanker for more & now we’ve got it! They are truly one of the uk’s finest & this ambitious record has something for everyone. A precious gem.

Single of the Week
: Esben & the Witch : Lucie, At The Precipice – limited 7″
(Too Pure)
Gorgeously haunting, slow building, siouxsie inspired “nightmare pop”. The 1st official release (following the self-released ep & split dance to the radio 12″) from Brighton’s hotly tipped (& rightly so) 3 piece who have been bubbling under for a while now & are ready to brim over the cauldron’s edge. this year’s the xx?

This Week’s Playback : Marina & The Diamonds ‘The Family Jewels’ – Tuesday 16th February @ 6pm
Hear the album in full here, in advance, with a “refreshment”! Preorder the album & you’ll get a poster & sticker & you’ll be in with a chance of winning a limited Marina & The Diamonds baseball shirt.

This Week’s Instore : Field Music – Friday 19th February @ 6pm
Can’t tell you how much we’re looking forward to this. Field Music return to Brighton to celebrate the release of their fantastic new album. They haven’t got a show down here, so this will be your only chance to see this wonderful band in Brighton. Their instore as The Week That Was was one of my highlights of 2008 & this should prove to be no different.

Forthcoming Instores : Tunng – Monday 1st March @ 6pm – ticket holders only
Husky Rescue – Thursday 4th March @ 6pm

Hello everyone.

It is yet another week of great, great music & it’s getting to the point where we’re having trouble keeping up but we’re trying our darndest. Quite apart from the opportunity to tell you how great the new Field Music album is one last time, there is the new record from Shearwater. ‘The Golden Archipelago’ is the final panel in their triptych on the natural world is perhaps their finest record to to date… There is also the new album from Peter Gabriel. He has undergone a little bit of a rehabilitation in the cool stakes what with Vampire Weekend name checking him & the diverse likes of Field Music (them again) & Yeasayer naming his influence on them. This new record justifies all the love he has been getting. It is a quite wonderful set of covers of the likes of Arcade Fire, Neil Young & Bon Iver that frames the material with just an orchestra & his inimitable vocals. Spellbinding stuff…. Lightspeed Champion returns with his sophomore record. Dev Hynes has traded in those americana threads to record a baroque pop record that is “Woody Allen singing Rufus Wainwright with glee” according to NME… That Voice of the Seven Woods guy is a slippery character. For his new album he is now Voice of the Seven Thunders & that is perhaps a reflection on the music as it whips up a storm  of progressive psych rock. Great stuff!… sadly Jack rose passed away late last year but not before recording ‘Luck In The Valley’. It goes to show this american primitive guitar player was right at the top of his game & his is a tragic loss… Clipd Beaks 3rd album delivers on their potential. It is a wonderfully expansive work that draws water from the same well as Royal Trux, TV On The Radio, This Heat & Liars.A murky & intense beauty…. while we wait impatiently on Wooden Shjips next record we can cling tight to the new Moon Duo record which is Eric Johnson of the Shjips & Sanae Yamada. It’s an interstellar jam full of repetitive riffs. Bit of a busman’s holiday then but no complaints from us!…. Did we mention our very own James Dean’s Lost Idol record yet? No? James has very generously given us copies of his new album 2 weeks up front so we advise you to swing by & pick it up if you like Four Tet, Boards of Canada, Caribou or Dextro. It really is a great record & no, he didn’t pay me to say that (he insisted he wouldn’t stoop so low). It also comes with an exclusive free bonus ep… We have all these releases plus the new Xiu Xiu record, Owl City, the Midlake super deluxe box, Gui Boratto, the next two volumes of Ethiopiques (24 & 25), the next installment from the world psychedelic label “Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas“, Justin Adams, the next in Madlib’s medicine show series, Oh No’s new record plus singles from Hot Chip, Dum Dum Girls, Los Campesinos & oh so much more. To see the complete listing of all new releases, click on the link below.

We would like to let those of you who are after the Massive Attack album on vinyl know that its release has been pushed back to at least 1st March & possibly later as they want to take their time getting the fancy packaging right. It is extremely limited so we recommend pre-ordering it if you haven’t already. Just give us a call, email or do it the old fashion way & come in the shop.

Right, I think that is about it. See you down the front at Orchestre Poly-Rythmo… Ooh, did I mention the great new record by Field Music yet?…

Have a good week all,

Sam & The Residents (Nat, Derry, Matt, James, Daniel, John, Simon & Liv)

Single of the Week
: The Besnard Lakes : Albatross – limited 12″

Hello everyone,
Hope you’ve all had a lovely week & that you’re ready for your fill of all that’s good in the music world. It’s another darn big release week we’re being treated to. Aside from Thee Silver Mt. Zion’s epic release, there’s the spectacular 80’s synth-pop extravaganza from Yeasayer that sees the band head in a somewhat dancier direction whilst retaining plenty of the strange & playful elements – comes with a free double sided print if you get in quick……..another “massive” album this week from the originators of the “trip hop” scene, Massive Attack – 3d has managed to drag Daddy G back into the fold & their 5th album really benefits from the chemistry between them & the host of quality guests……….Alan Sparhawk of shop faves Low started a side project a couple of years back that lets him release his demons & boy are we glad he didn’t keep them hidden away coz Retribution Gospel Choir are a seriously powerful, visceral trio who deliver distorted dirges & riff-heavy power-pop of the highest order………..everyone’s going crazy for the new album from the legendary proto-rap pioneer Gil Scott-Heron, whose 1st studio album in 16 years is being hailed as a triumphant return……..if you like your beats minimal but glitchy & sunny rather than icy, then check out the new Pantha Du Prince album……..there’s an ace new Finders Keepers comp of mindblowing Persian pop/funk/psyche called Pomegranates…………Madlib fans will want to check out the new Stones Throw release from Strong Arm Steady as he’s provided a stack of new beats for them……..Mercury nominated Fionn Regan is back with a set of more ragged, more bluesy tunes that are bursting with ideas…….if you’re one for haunting, psyche-fuzz-folk a la Grouper, check out the fabulous new Inca Ore release……..& if dark, fuzzy experimental synth drones a la Lichens are your thing, then Infinite Body comes highly recommended……….all this & new albums from The Album Leaf, Oh No Ono, Clare & The Reasons, Get Well Soon, Throats, Blueneck, The Watson Twins, Alison Moorer, Salif Keita, Hayseed Dixie & more & there are also tons of new singles out this week including The Besnard Lakes, Nice Nice, Babe Rainbow, Field Music, Dirty Projectors (very limited 7″), Hurts, Les Cox (Sportifs) & some more Third Man 7″s for those of you collecting them too. To see the complete listing of all new releases, click on the link below..

Just a quick reminder that the Tues 9th Feb is the closing date for voting for your favourite indie on the www.indierecordshop.org website. Just go to the Competitions section to vote & 1 lucky voter will win 2 tickets to the Brits. We’d obviously love to win “the nation’s favourite indie competition” so please vote for us!

We’ve got a quick competition for you as well. We’ve been enjoying the lo-fi garage-y brilliance of The Soft Pack’s debut on our stereo this week & this Sunday 14th Feb sees them visit the Freebutt to promote said album. They are as fab live as they are on record, so if you want to win a pair of tickets to see them for free, all you have to do is answer the following question :
Which iconic landmark did The Soft Pack drummer Brian Hill plot to blow up in his previous band?
Email your answer to info@resident-music.com by Thursday 5pm & we’ll pick a winner at random. The winner will be notified by email so keep an eye on your inbox.

Over & out………

Album of the Week : The Soft Pack – The Soft Pack (Heavenly)
(comes with a high quality limited tote bag & badge set – only available from a handful of shops)
The San Diego 4-piece present one of the best garage-rock-psyche-pop-punk albums we’ve heard in recent times. Their raw, insistent, thrashy, sloppy sound recalls the heyday of college rock. Mining the guitar/vocal harmony pop-punk of The Ramones, The Replacements, early REM & Wire, they sound like The Strokes doing garage & it works bloody brilliantly!

Single of the Week : Small Black / Washed Out : Despicable Dogs (Washed Out Remix) /  You’ll See (Small Black Remix) limited 7″ (Lovepump United)
Hazy, woozy, muffled loveliness shared & reworked for each other – sweet.

Gig of the Week : These New Puritans / Trailer Trash Tracys – Monday 1st February @ Audio
You’ve probably gathered how much we’re loving the album right now, so we’re really looking forward to hear how the new material translates live. It’s been selling fast so be snappy!

As you’ll see above, The Soft Pack’s lo-fi preppy garage-rock-pop-punk vibes are our pick of the week but this week also sees the 3rd immense album from Midlake released on Bella Union (quite a run they’re having already this year eh?) & this time the band are looking more to the late 60’s British folk of Fairport Convention & Steeleye Span than to the soft rock of Neil Young & Fleetwood Mac but the sound remains undeniably theirs & Tim Smith’s vocals are as mesmerising as ever (there’s a jolly expensive, jolly limited edition box set version of the album due in this week – just ask if you want to know more)…………Hot Chip are back with an uplifting, warm & soulful collection of songs that, as always, mines a host of diverse influences & comes up trumps – truly a one of a kind band………(if you’re after the vinyl, it’s due in the next couple of days but it’s ultra limited & fairly pricey. Hello music lovers of Brighton & Hove & beyond!
Welcome to a hefty week of musical delights. We had a lot of trouble selecting our album of the week as we are ridiculously spoilt for choice but we swore we would stick to our new year’s resolution of only having one each week & we can’t buckle in the 1st month. So, although Beach House worthily won out in the end, there are a heap more we need to rave about. Sam, Matt & James are all totally digging the mesmerising new beats from Mr Keiran Hebden who is back with his 5th Four Tet album………..me, Sam, Liv & Derry are all feeling the fab Francophile vibes of Charlotte Gainsbourg whose new collaboration with Beck feeds off the legacy of her father & defies all expectations……..myself & James are loving Type’s new offering from Richard Skelton & although we pretty much love everything the label put out, we agree that this is one of the best of their releases for ages…………Britt Daniel’s Spoon have always been a consistent outfit but Derry & Sam reckon his 7th album is something pretty damn special & it seems to be winning us all over……..Sam’s on off relationship with Tindersticks is very much on with their new record – it’s a more colourful affair for sure……..I’ve been bouncing around in the basement to the afro pop vibes of Fools Gold for a few weeks now – it’s been good hearing it on the shop stereo this week, filling the shop with sunny sounds – comes with an ace bonus remix disc too……..James is hailing the return of Norwegian oddballers Jaga Jazzist – an absolute corker he’s declared!………we’re being paid a visit by Erland & The Carnival on Tuesday & in preparation we’ve been enjoying their debut of folk-tinged, psyched-out, fuzzed-up brilliance………local lads The Sticks come good in their ramshackle way with their debut of stripped down garage party tunes. Liv’s lovin’ it!……….Durutti Column’s Tony Wilson tribute is undoubtedly their best output since their Factory Records days – a beguiling set of mainly instrumental pieces – perfect early morning vibes…….the big haired dude that is Robert A.A.Lowe (aka Lichens) puts out a fab krauty, psychy, droney vinyl only release this week……….Kompakt’s Pop Ambient 2010 comp is gonna keep my ears well happy for a while………Keb Darge & the modfather Paul Weller have got together to deliver Lost & Found – Real R&B & Soul – what Sam describes as a “barnstormer” of a comp (no, we don’t know what he means either – Googled it, none the wiser??)……fans of Nadja’s Aidan Baker will definitely want to check out his Whisper Room project – another superb Baker fix…….all this & new albums from Magnetic Fields, White Rabbits, Hadouken (we have a limited amount of signed copies & posters), Cold War Kids, Danny & The Champions, Pit Er Pat, Citay, William Basinski, Saxon Shore, Nils Petter Molvaer, Pat Metheny, Chicago Underground Duo, Carolina Chocolate Drops & much more. Check out the complete listing from the link below.

Right then, I’m off to Norfolk to drink lots of beer & go for long contemplative walks (probably more of the drinking & less of the walking though to be honest)………….
Cheers!

Album of the Week : These New Puritans – Hidden (limited deluxe indies only hardback book verison cd / standard cd / limited lp) (Angular)
***COMPETITION!*** Buy the album from here before the 25th Jan & you can enter the competition to win a free pair of tickets to see the band at Audio on 1st February!
The stunningly ambitious 2nd album from TNP sees them go for broke, incorporating everything from 6 foot Japanese taiko drums, a 13 piece woodwind/brass ensemble, foley sound effect recording techniques & sub-heavy beats to a children’s choir – this really is quite something! Sometimes brutal, sometimes melancholy & sounding like nothing else around at the moment, it comes highly recommended.

Single of the Week : Beach House – Norway / Baby (exclusive b-side) 7″ (Bella Union)
The 1st release from the band’s forthcoming 3rd album (‘Teen Dream’ – out next week & it’s a cracker!). This single sees them adding a hint of classic girl-group pop to their woozy, hazy dreamworld.

Gig of the Week : HTRK @ Freebutt – Weds 20th January (www.myspace.com/htrk)
The Berlin / Melbourne / London trio have provided recent tour support for The Horrors & Yeah Yeah Yeahs. HTRK make dark music full of menacing, grinding basslines, caustic guitar feedback & lucid melodies. Recalling Suicide & drawing on krautrock influences, theirs is a bewitching noir-ish universe. 2009’s ‘Marry Me Tonight’ was a truly mesmerising record, so we’re looking forward to this one.

Forthcoming Instores : Erland & The Carnival - Tuesday 26th January @ 6pm
Field Music – Friday 19th February @ 6pm

Before we get on to the New Releases we would like to draw your attention to the Memory Tapes album which, from now until we run out, comes with a 4 track bonus disc including a ‘Cosmic Dub’ remix by The Horrors of the single ‘Bicycle’. If this album has flown beneath your radar (we had it as an upfront release last year but it was officially released last week), then now is the time to pick it up! It garnered great reviews including Album of the Week status in The Times & Pitchfork described it succinctly as thus: “intriguingly hazy & wistful but beat-informed.” To these ears: New Order meets those long hot summers of school days & it is, of course, recommended.

& so…..Welcome to this week’s musical news!
This week sees the release of many fine albums including a baroque pop extravaganza from Owen Pallett (formerly known as Final Fantasy)……a fabulous stripped back, raucous affair from Scout Niblett, shop favourites…..A Grave With No Name release their debut full-length (of sorts) – it’s a collection of the sold out singles, b-sides & hidden gems – spellbinding freak/folk art rock of the highest order……. Mark Oliver Everett (aka E) of Eels has a serious case of heartbreak right now & ‘End Times’ is a break-up album right up there with the finest……Guillemots’ main man Fyfe Dangerfield takes a little bit of time away from his day job & delivers a raw & bare-bones solo record……hip hop producer Blockhead returns with a blunted late-night album on Ninja Tunes for instrumental hip hop heads & Tru Thoughts fans alike… Robert Henke returns under his Monolake moniker with an album of the deepest minimal techno in a while……there are also new albums by Lost Prophets, The Irrepressibles, Angelique Kidjo & singles by Beach House, Erland & the Carnival, Lyre Birds & more. For the complete New Release listing click on the link below.

Right, that’s it for another week. Hope you all have a good one & we look forward to seeing you.

Album of the Week :  Vampire Weekend – Contra (cd & lp) (XL)
Those of you who came to the playback before Christmas will already know (unless you got too sozzled on the mulled wine to remember!) that the Brooklynites have delivered a blinder of a follow up to their modern-day classic debut. Their joyous fusion of afro rhythms, surf guitars & art-rock will certainly be keeping us warm through the big freeze. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to 2010.
Single of the Week :  These New Puritans – We Want War 10″ (Angular Recordings)
what a return! this extraordinary 7.5 minute epic is the 1st taste of their bizarre but utterly compelling 2nd album, ‘Hidden’. Massive Attack meets doom meets rock opera – bring it on!
This Week’s Instore : Good Shoes album launch - Wednesday 13th @ 6pmticket holders only
To celebrate the release of their 2nd album, the alt-popsters are popping in to play an intimate fans show. Just ask instore to find out how you can get your hands on a pair of tickets for this event. The album’s ace & their last Brighton show sold out super fast, so we feel very lucky to have this lot play instore for us.

 Also of note this week………
We’ve got the brand new Laura Veirs album a couple of weeks ahead of it’s scheduled release date - what a gorgeous record for her to return to Bella Union with – a lovely, more stripped back, folky affair with more strings……..jerky alt-popsters Good Shoes finally deliver album number 2 & it’s loaded with bouncing, rocking, frenetic indie dancefloor fillers – the indies only version comes with a bonus live disc of a show recorded exclusively for this release……….indie-dance fusion experts & New Order-a-likes Delphic have seen themselves appear on all this year’s hotly tipped lists & now you can find out why with the release of their massive debut…………former Moldy Peach Adam Green is back with solo album number 7 & although he’s dropped a lot of the goofball quirkiness, he’s retained his renowned wit & charm……..Resident fave Martyn is the 1st to deliver a Fabric comp in 2010 – an essential & unpredictable portrait of today’s cross-pollinating, all-embracing music scenes……..the folkies amongst you who came to love the collaborative delight that was the Imagined Village album will be glad to know there’s now a pretty special follow up that the Independent have awarded 5/5 & have declared it to be “a quantum leap beyond the 1st album” & there’s the 4th vinyl only release in the much collected Disposable Music series from the Finders Keepers stable. Also, this month’s Mojo comes with a free Amorphous Androgynous comp as the covermount, so those of you who have been loving the 2 officially released volumes as much as we have, can get an extra helping for free + we are featured in this month’s issue as Mojo’s “Store of the Month”. We like to think of ourselves as a “shop” but who are we to pick holes! To see all the new release info, click on the link below. Please note that some of the releases may be a wee bit delayed due to snow-related delivery issues.
