Click on the links below for a brief summary of the content of this email. You’ll probably want to read it all though just to make sure you don’t miss out on anything!
record store day exclusive titles
“The local record store is a cultural event. Every purchase you make , every day, every year, it is a rich cultural history in the making. I have precious memories of my favorite shops & so do many of my best friends. That’s shared history man. That’s powerful stuff.” – Brett Netson (Built To Spill)
These are just a few of the comments made by bands/artists in response to Record Store Day. It is an international event being held on Saturday 18th April & there are 67 stores taking part in the UK. We, of course, are one of them. so here’s what it’s all about………
Whether you are a casual, whimsical buyer or the “simply can’t help yourself” obsessive type, you deserve a decent record shop in which to spend your hard earned cash & the bands & artists that pour their heart & soul into their work, deserve to be properly represented on the high street. Sadly, independent record shops have become fewer & further between, in the past few years especially, so we need to ensure that those of us left, provide you with the best service, music & experience possible. To this end, a set of people around the globe have joined forces to establish Record Store Day. It’s all about the independents. It’s all about the bands. It’s all about the fans & the music lovers.
On this day, Saturday 18th April, you will be able to buy a whole load of titles completely exclusively, through the participating shops. They will all be extremely limited. As a taster of what’s on offer, there are exclusive early releases from Wooden Shjips (with a bonus disc of ace music chosen by the band), Graham Coxon & Wilco, exclusive compilations from Thrill Jockey, the Numero Group, Rough Trade (a cassette!) & Domino, exclusive 7″s from Tom Waits, Sonic Youth/Beck, Sonic Youth/Jay Reatard, signed copies of the new The Big Pink 7″ (exclusive to us), loads of Rhino reissues from the likes of New Order, The Stooges & Janes Addiction, loads of exclusive vinyl releases including the recent Arthur Russell album, free stuff & much, much more than I can type out here. To see a complete list of all the titles that have been confirmed as exclusives for this day so far, click on the link at the top.
Also, we will be celebrating our 5th Birthday on Monday 13th April so, we thought it made sense to link these 2 major events together with a week of instores & bargains.
The instores begin on Monday 13th with the new XL signing Blue Roses, popping in to launch her gorgeous debut (not officially released until the end of the month but exclusivly available from us at the instore) & the run ends with the adorable shop favourite Emiliana Torrini who will be playing for us on Record Store Day itself. As this is likely to be a ridiculously popular instore, we are going to issue tickets on the day. Basically, anyone who comes in & makes a purchase on RSD to support the day, will be entitled to 1 ticket to the show in the evening (while they last). We also have a Brighton showcase which features 3 of our very favourite Brighton acts : Bela Emerson, Jacob’s Stories & Birdengine, a night of troubadours featuring William Elliott Whitmore & Daniel Michaelson (of Absentee) & Fujiya & Miyagi have also finally rescheduled their long overdue instore. Priority tickets for this one will go to those of you who preordered the album way back when & were promised an instore. We will fill up the shop with anyone else on a first come first serve basis on the night. We will also be DJing at the Fortune of War again on the Thursday of this week so pop down for some beers & tunes. Again, for full details of all these events, click on the link at the top.
The bargains will include a whole load of titles available at £4.99 from Monday 13th April, most of which have never been available this cheap before – once they’re gone, they’re gone! They include the most recent albums from Telepathe, Andrew Bird, Joan As Policewoman, The Boy Least Likely To, Martha Wainwright, Crystal Castles, Dan Le Sac & Scroobious Pip, Yeasayer, Rolo Tomassi, Eagles Of Death Metal, Secret Machines & many more. We will also have all 3 albums from The Knife & The Fleet Foxes (single cd) album at just £4.99. There will also be some recent albums available at just £6.99 for a limited time from the 13th. To see the list of bargains we have confirmed so far, click on the link at the top.
A lot of work has gone into preparing this week, so we’d love to see as many of you as possible joining in the celebrations & making the most of what we’ve got lined up for you. We will be open from 9am everyday as usual. The exclusive titles cannot be preordered, so you will need to make the 18th a date in your diary & ensure you make time to come & visit the shop.
Right, did you get all that? Pop in if you have any questions……….
See you soon,
Natasha, Derry, Matt, Sam, Ami, James, Daniel, John, Simon & Calum aka The Residents
