Album of the Week : Tom Waits – Glitter & Doom (Anti)
Single of the Week : Four Tet – Love Cry (Joy Orbison Remix) limited 12″ (Domino)
This week we have been busy compiling our end of year lists – the results will be with you later in the week, when you can read all about what’s carried us Residents through 2009.
In the meantime, the new releases are still coming thick and fast, as Christmas grows ever closer (our Christmas decorations are going up as i type this and are looking very nice too!). Our album of the week this week is Tom Waits‘ new live spectacular ‘Glitter and Doom’. It’s a fitting testament to his incredible sold out 2008 tour of the same name & also features a whole disc of his inimitable storytelling. The first few copies come with a rather lovely poster, so get your skates on if you want one! Also new this week, we have the debut album from Real Estate, whose mesmerising and atmospheric sun dappled take on classic US indie will definitely help you forget what it looks like outside right now……Twinkranes bring us some spectacular Irish kraut, infusing their prog and krautrock influences with a slight pop edge…..Dave Rawlings is more usually found in Old Crow Medicine Show or collaborating with Gillian Welch but his debut solo album as Dave Rawlings Machine is very assured, thoroughly accomplished and shows his deep knowledge of authentic country music…..the solo album from Olöf Arnalds (formerly of Mum), finally gets a UK release – her intimate and evocative solo album is definitely one for fans of Joanna Newsom or Vashti Bunyan……Sole is one of the godfathers of abstract hip hop and co-founder of the famed Anticon label and his new, reflective album contains more mangled beats and surreal rhymes, packed with wit and dense lyricism… Black To Comm continues Type’s recent run of great releases, with a spectacular album which has moved away from his usual organic drone, to a sound rooted in world music, techno, noise, avant-garde & ambient music… Osso bring us a unique take on Sufjan Stevens’ 2001electronic concept album ‘Enjoy Your Rabbit’, transforming it into something more closely resembling contemporary avant-garde classical music… Soul Jazz records deliver Steppas’ Delight 2, another foray into the world of half-step beats and heavy basslines. Featuring all the heavy hitters and the most important tracks, this is an essential compilation for any fan of the ever-broadening dubstep scene…..a busy week for Soul Jazz, as we also have Freedom, Rhythm and Sound, a companion to the book of the same name, charting the revolutionary jazz that was being produced in the 1960s……Where Will You Be Christmas Day? is not your usual Christmas album (thank God) but a brilliant compilation of vintage Christmas songs from 1917 to 1959, featuring the likes of Lightning Hopkins, Leadbelly & Bessie Smith – a marvellous antidote to the commercialised Christmas of today… All of this and yet more, with more new records from Supersilent, September Collective, Pyramids with Nadja, The Real Tuesday Weld, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Turbo Fruits (ex Be Your Own Pet), Gay Against You, Underworld, Para, Julien Dyne, Edan, Soulive, Soul Harmonics & a rather special Miles Davis box set. Albums of the Week : Nurses – Apple’s Acre (Dead Oceans)
Sleeping States – In The Gardens of The North (Bella Union)
Single of the Week : Woods – To Clean (Handmade Records)
Forthcoming Instores : Kate Walsh (acoustic set) – Monday 31st August @ 6pm
Thomas Dybdahl – Tues 15th Sept @ 6pm
Hello everyone,
It’s that time of the week again when we bombard you with new release, tickets & other useful (or not) info to brighten your Monday morning (or Sunday evening depending on how speedily this has made its way to you) . Any which way, let’s get to it………..
Firstly we’d like to thank The XX & all of you who patiently waited to see them on Thursday. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we did. The album’s been one of our best “off the deck” sellers for ages & we’re all hooked on it, so we were chuffed to bits to have them here, despite them arriving a little ill-equipped (to say the least!). Still , they got themselves sorted in the end, played a fab set & were lovely people to boot, so all was forgiven in a flash. If you are lucky enough to have a ticket for the Vampire Weekend show this week then get there early to catch The XX supporting & if not, they are playing their own show at the Freebutt in October but it’s selling fast already, so don’t hang about.
Right then, onto the releases………which this week are headed up by 2 corkers – 1 from Portland’s Nurses, whose euphoric yet dreamy psychedelic off-kilter pop should defintely appeal to fans of Yeasayer or Sunset Rubdown & the 2nd is from Bristol’s Sleeping States – an utterly beguiling listen that fans of Grizzly Bear or the Low Anthem would do well to check out………..Icelandic eccentric pop maestros Mum make a very welcome return & being back on the Morr Music label, they have come up with a suitably crafted set of folk tinged electronica & expansive pop………….Arctic Monkeys return with their 3rd album & it turns out to be a winner! Sam here, for one, is rather enjoying their Josh Homme ramped up effort, so it looks like there’s plenty of life left in these cold loving primates yet (the 1st person to buy the album will receive the 1 promotional printed bag of humbugs that we got in the post this morning)…………..from the much loved round these parts Kranky stable, comes the Nudge album that’s been getting regular play on my iPod recently – definitely one for fans of Valet (one of last year’s best releases on the same label) & it features said outfit’s Honey Owens too………The Fall deliver some more live action, this time from the gig that saw off the Hammersmith Palais in style in 2007 – an historic event for an historic venue……..musical siblings The Fiery Furnaces have stripped back & simplified their sound (as much as these 2 are ever going to, let’s face it) & deliver a vital record as a result……….following a rave Pitchfork review we got a flurry of enquiries about an album from the elusive JJ on Sincerely Yours, so the label have kindly shipped us some – only a limited number on import but if you enjoyed the Air France album, check this out – it’s a real grower………the much blogged about Solid Gold album has been made available early through a handful of selected indies on the back of the hype, so if you like the Junior Boys’ doleful disco, pop in & check this out………it’s a big week for Scandi releases – 2 of the biggest coming from Denmarks’ indie-dream-pop-rockers Mew & also Sweden’s The Who & The Kinks indebted The Soundtrack Of Our Lives………..current 4/4 raving whizzkid Zomby releases his follow up to last year’s much lauded ‘Where Were You In 92?’ (one of John’s favourites) & for a limited time only, you can pick it up for a bargain £6.99……..all this & new records from Fruit Bats, Imogen Heap, Pete Molinari, Dinosaur Pile Up, Athlete, Lovelikefire, The Hat, Neil Landstrumm, Felix Da Housecat, Watermelon Slim, Woodpecker Wooliams, Willie Nelson & more & new vinyl from the likes of Peter Broderick (ultra limited), Om, Caretaker, New Order, The XX, Passion Pit & more. Albums of the Week : We Fell To Earth – We Fell To Earth (In Stereo)
Dextro – Winded (16k)
Tara Jane O’Neil – O Ways Away (K Records)
Single of the Week : Django Django – Storm (Shadazz)
Hopefully some of you have survived the horizontal rain & biblical skies, as this week’s selection of new releases & tickets is definitely worth braving the weather for. First up, some important news-type things worth mentioning :
- The Dinosaur Jr. show is no longer an early one (doors now 7.30, due to end @ 11pm but there is also now an aftershow party. Who knows, maybe the white haired wizard himself J. Mascis will join in until the early hours (or maybe not).
- There has been a venue change for Good Shoes on August 1st (moving from Audio to the much more intimate Freebutt)
- Magnolia Electric Company on September 3rd now has no support, with doors at 10.15pm & MEC on at 10.30, so don’t be late!
Apologies to all of you who were unable to pick up our album of the week for last week, the fantastic ‘Rated O’ by Oneida. This was due to us lot not ordering anywhere near enough & selling out by Monday lunchtime – a record album of the week seller! We are really, really, really sorry. But better news – it’s back in stock at the supplier so we’ll have plenty more back in stock this week! Awesome! It is in fact also a triple cd album, rather than the double cd we stated in last weeks mailout. It’s well worth the wait so don’t miss out now it’s back in stock. Tickets for the show are also selling well so don’t hang about there either.
A couple of deals round these parts worth mentioning also :
- in celebration of her utterly fantastic performance at Loop, Fever Ray’s incredible self titled debut has been reduced to a spectacular £4.99 (& still comes with a bonus disc of remixes). Get in quick – we have limited stock
- We have also reduced a number of vinyl titles that you’ll find in the box under the vinyl racks cunningly labelled “sale vinyl”. Come & check out the bargains……
Now, on to those new releases… Three fantastic albums of the week for you this week….. first up is We Fell to Earth a duo comprised of half of UNKLE & Mark Lanegan’s ex-wife/band member. This fusion of taut electronic kraut & hazy desert psychedelica is utterly mesmerising & should appeal to fans of everyone from Portishead & Massive Attack to Siver Apples…..Secondly we have Dextro – fans of Boards Of Canada & Four Tet should check out this self released album (only available in selected shops) – his take on home-listening electronica creates evocative & ethereal pieces tinged with jazz & post-rock influences…..& finally, the 5th album from the wonderful Tara Jane O’Neil – a truly arresting offering that made its impact on the very first listen – this one should appeal to fans of Nina Nastasia or Jana Hunter………
Other albums worthy of note this week include : Jonsi & Alex, the Sigur Ros main man & partner, whose take on ambient music creates beautiful sonic soundscapes buried beneath analogue crackle and hiss – fans of Library Tapes & Arvo Part take note…….the prolific Jason Molina is back with Magnolia Electric Company who have created a softer and more mournful record than usual as a result of the untimely death of their bassist in 2007…..The Duke and the King feature Simone Felice of the Felice Brothers, who has toned down the hillbilly to craft a record rich in 70s americana…..Nadja & Black Boned Angel have collaborated to create an album which fuses their respective dreamy doom & sharp metallic riffery… Summer Cats lighten the tone with their Slumberland (home of Pains of Being Pure at Heart) debut, full to the brim with garage-pop tunes which lean heavily to the side of pop…..we have the record that launched a million technicolour dreams, or at least the career of Mgmt as their 2005 debut ep finally gets a proper uk release… Tittyshakers Vol. 1 is pretty much given away by its title, filthy rockabilly & sleazy rock n’ roll… a bit of an idm revival this week, first Rival Consoles shows a healthy respect for Richard D. James whilst sounding fresh & modern at the same time……& secondly Jega, the “Stanley Kubrick of idm” is back after an astonishing 9 year gap…..15 Years Fuse brings some techno to the party, some huge names contributing to the celebration of the Belgian club’s big one-five……Lushlife was the man responsible for the infamous Kanye West vs. Beach Boys mashup of a while back & he has now got around to releasing a debut album proper……Soul Jazz’s new off shoot label World Audio Foundation brings us both Carnival Music of Eastern Cuba and Polyphonic Voices of Georgia, showing their commitment to tracking down remarkable music from all corners of the globe…..all this & new music from Kid British, Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople), Hunter Muskett, Legion of Two, Notes to Self & Bill Frisell amongst others.
For further details of all the new releases this week, click the link below to see the full new release listing. It contains descriptions of everything far superior to what i have just managed to string together.
