Liars 5th record is perhaps their most audacious yet bringing together the many facets of their sound for an art pop record that is a thrill from top to bottom. If you can imagine a nightmarish meeting point between TV on The Radio, Beck, Suicide & The Birthday Party, that takes place on an eerie, post apocalyptic night, you’ll get a feel for this all enveloping, slighty threatening but utterly exhilarating ride.

Single of the Week : Gaggle : I Hear Flies (limited 7″) (Transgressive)
Debut single from the 20 strong all female choir Gaggle. Led by Deborah Coughlin, the girls unleash chaotic chants of “I’m a drunk” over dark, dubby industrial-strength beats. It’s an original, raucous, chaotic noise which is irresistible & a whole lot of fun. “the most exciting, innovative & genuinely imaginitive force at large in music right now” – NME.

Hello out there!
So it is yet another week chock-full of releases to satisfy every possible musical whim you may want to satisfy. At the top of the list is the long-time-coming new record by Liars mentioned above but that is far from all that will keep us busy this week. The Knife return with their most ambitious record to date – an opera about Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species”. A brother & sister couldn’t possibly tackle this on their own so they roped in Planning To Rock & Mt. Sims & the result is an exquisite, daring & expansive record… Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett return with the latest Gorillaz album & the great & good – Snoop Dogg, Mark E Smith, Bobby Womack etc – have once again queued up for cameos. It is a concept record about how we’re ruining the planet but the important thing is it is loaded to the gills with pop tunes!… Montreal’s Besnard Lakes return & they have served up an epic post-prog behemoth of an album. Their last was a firm favourite round these parts & this one looks to be no different… On some downtime from The Shins, frontman James Mercer has hooked up with Dangermouse & they have called themselves Broken Bells. The results aren’t a million miles from The Shins but we say if it ain’t broke….. Now I don’t know if you have heard but this little heard US alt-rock band Pavement have reformed for some shows & their label Domino has put together a “Best of” quick sharp. If you haven’t got any of this highly influential ( & just plain great) band’s records then this is the perfect entry point. Matt here has it all but still needs the “Best of” (I know, what a fanboy)…. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club return this week & it seems they have recaptured the rock & roll spirit of their debut & married it to the americana of “Howl”. It’s nice to have them back… As improbable as it may seem, Jimi Hendrix returns this week with a ‘brand new’ album, very limited single & a comprehensive reissue of the rest of his catalogue. If you don’t have any of this stuff then do yourself a favour – the man was a true one off… While we wait eagerly for the new Flying Lotus we can sate our appetite with the new record by Gonjasufi on Warp. Flying Lotus alongside Gaslamp Killer helps produce this awesome psych-bass (yeah, i made it up) oddity. If you like Fly Lo’ & Gaslamp & you are partial to a little Finders Keepers this one is for you… It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this weeks Nigeria Special Volume 2 on Soundway is the last in the label’s series exploring 60s & 70s Nigerian goodness. The good news it is yet another impeccably compiled release & it’s sure to never venture far from my turntable for at least a few months… If that isn’t enough West African gold for your liking then be sure to pick up Afro Rock Vol. 1 on Strut. It is yet another set of pearls & as always highly recommended!… It’s been a little while since Bossa Nova royalty Bebel Gilberto has put out a record but this week is the week! It is a beguiling set that has production from Mark Ronson, the Dust Brothers & another member of Bossa royalty Daniel Jobim, amongst others. Beyond these records there are new releases from Sa Dingding, The Kissaway Trail, The Chieftains & Ry Cooder, New Young Pony Club, Duke Special,Titus Andronicus & singles from Tindersticks, Veronica Falls, Fanfarlo & oh so much more. To see the full list of this week’s releases, click on the link at the bottom.

And one last thing before we go… Now, we’re sure you have all heard about the proposed closure of BBC 6Music & the BBC Asian Network. We would like to direct you to a petition objecting to their closure here:
6 Music & Asian Network Petition. The more people that make their feelings known the better. It would be a crying shame if either of these stations had to close as both offer a unique service. Obviously from our perspective we’re sadder to see 6Music and its many great DJs, Marc Riley, Jarvis Cocker, Adam & Joe, Craig Charles etc being shown the door as they have collectively turned us on to a slew of great artists & offered great exposure to a number of our favourite undervalued acts such as Field Music. But both stations will leave a huge hole & we should all make our objections heard. Please sign the petition & if you wish to add more contact the BBC Trust via their website here & BBC Complaints here.

Right, that will probably do for another week. Have a good one.

Dayve Hawk aka Memory Tapes has been setting blogs alight with his woozy, sun-dappled dance pop & remixes for fellow indie types such as Yeasayer & pop behemoths Britney Spears & Michael Jackson for the best part of a year now & his debut album “Seek Magic” was one of the unsung highlights of late last year. On Tuesday he will be gracing the stage in Brighton for the very 1st time & it is sure to be a great night out.

Competition Time!
Once again we have not 1 but 2 competions for you this week. First up we have a pair of VIP tickets to give away for Spiritual Element’s 12th Birthday at Concorde on 1st April. The Line up includes Fabio & Grooverider & Ratpack. All you have to do is answer this simple question:

Q: What name do Grooverider’s mum & dad know him by?

Next up we have a pair of VIP tickets to give away for Finley Quaye’s show at Concorde on 4th April. Just answer the following question:

Q: Which other member of the Quaye family was a member of Massive Attack & went on to solo success?

To enter either compilation email us the answer to info@resident-music.com by Monday 12pm with the subject heading either: Spiritual Element or Finley Quaye competition & we will pick a name out of the metaphorical hat. Keep an eye on your Inbox – we’ll inform the winners by email.

Right, tickets. Now it seems these days a week can’t go by without us getting a mountain of new tickets & this week is no different. Here are just a few of the tickets we have received this week: Mr Scruff, Dead Meadow, Johnny Flynn, Vic Godard & Subway Sect, Acid Mothers Temple, Quasi, Scratch Perverts & Crippled Black Phoenix. And that barely scratches the surface. On top of those we should let you know that a number of gigs are selling fast so you shouldn’t sleep on Deerhunter, Health or Son of Dave if you’re thinking of going. We would also like to inform all those going to the Turin Brakes show at Concorde on the 27th of this month that the doors are now 6pm & it will be an early show.

Album of the Week : Joanna Newsom : Have One On Me – 3cd / 3lp (Drag City)
What were the chances of Ms.Newsom topping ‘Ys’? What were the chances of her doing it with a triple album? Well, she’s only gone & done it! Yes ladies & gentlemen, you can believe the 5/5 Uncut review, the 5/5 Mojo review, the 9.2/10 Pitchfork review etc because the harp plucking siren has delivered in a big way! This 2 hour extravagant, colourful masterpiece is everything you could want from the squeaky one & so much more. Exquisite!

Single of the Week : Beach Fossils : Daydream / Desert Sand (limited 7″) (Captured Tracks)
Jangly sun-drenched riffs, kaleidoscopic rhythms & all round lovely haziness saturate Beach Fossils’ 1st release. Yes, we know it’s another Captured Tracks one – we just can’t help ourselves!

This Week’s Instores :
Tunng – Monday 1st March @ 6pm – ticket holders only. Acoustic album release show.
Tickets have all gone now. You could try your luck on the door, in case any ticket holders don’t turn up or you could buy / win tickets to the Concorde show (see below).

Husky Rescue – Thursday 4th March @ 6pm - we didn’t ticket this one so just turn up. Their show on the same day is pretty much sold out now. This will be a stripped back, intimate acoustic set from the Finns. We are big fans of the band & love their Scandi-dream-pop – perfect to draw in the Spring. Come & see for yourself………

Gig of the Week : Dextro / Lost Idol @ The Albert Monday 1st March
Dextro’s ‘Winded’ album has had much airtime on the Resident stereo since it’s release & it flies off the deck everytime. Much like fellow Scots Boards of Canada, his music is pastoral & melancholic but his blurry landscapes also enter jazzier post-rock terrain. Support comes from Lost Idol (aka Resident James) – another record that flies off the deck everytime we play it. You may have caught his much talked about show supporting Fujiya & Miyagi recently – now his electronic krauty grooves will warm up this top night out.

On the tickets front, this is quite possibly the most mental week we’ve ever had for ticket deliveries so pay attention – here’s just a selection of what we’ve had in the week (you’ll need to check out the link at the top for the full listing) : The Strange Boys (unsurprisingly already selling well), Deerhunter (they never fail to thrill!), The Unthanks (this’ll be special in the church), Doll & The Kicks (gig’s this week!), Health (hell yeah!), Tim Hecker (down the front, sitting on the floor, gazing up in wonderment – that’ll be me!), Kate Nash (virtually all gone already), Johann Johannsson with a string quartet (tiny gig – don’t miss out), Joy Orbison, Caspa, Primary 1, Electric Six, Damon & Naomi, Neil Cowley Trio, Tenebrous Liar, Thomas Truax, Wolves In The Throneroom, Wolf Eyes, Secret Affair, Everything Everything / Lyrebirds, Royal Bangs, Doctors Orders & oh so many more are now on sale. Remember, you can book tickets by phone if you can’t make it into the shop – some of these shows will sell out very quickly so don’t miss out. You can either collect them from here at a later date or from the venue on the night (in most cases). Simples!
