A real stunner this – imagine grouper jamming with wolves in the throne room, or mount eerie’s heavy forays into natural world, plus a healthy dash of mysticism, and you might come up with this (but probably not).
All the music on ‘Vouna’ was composed and all instruments performed by front-person Yianna Bekris, her vision to evoke the devastating and beautiful journey of becoming the last person on Earth. Razor sharp tremolo picked guitars cut through the heart like a knife. Mournfully sung vocals and cinematic melodies are combined with crushing doom drumming, while layers of primitive ’90s digital synths conjure a lush and rugged soundscape. The music is inspired and influenced by Finnish funeral doom, Eastern European black metal, and Greek folk music. “an excellent specimen of an extreme atmospheric record. Ethereal on one end, gritty and dirty on the other, filled with ambient passages and epic moments and some exquisite experimentalism” - popmatters
