for their first album without the incendiary alice glass for crystal castles seemed like an almost impossible hurdle, but they’ve managed to successfully reinvent themselves - ‘amnesty (i)’ pitches itself somewhere between salem’s caustic witch house and health’s bruising synth assault.
it’s a necessary shift, and one that’s paid off incredibly well – the intensity and the power now entirely from ethan kath’s synths, with new vocalist edith frances’ vocals more like an extra instrument in the mix. it’s a fascinating and well executed evolution, and a defining statement to start the second era of crystal castles.
