These heartbreakers pull off the trick of expanding beyond their 2-piece approach whilst maintaining the charm that suckered us in in the first place. In fact, powerplant improves upon its predecessor with subtler, prettier songs, where gorgeous, intricate guitar work eases from the speakers rather than fights to hold your attention. The songwriting is up a gear, too, which when paired with lilting slacker vibes amounts to some truly golden songs - one listen ‘it gets more blue’ and ‘123’ ought to do it. It puts girlpool in a league with the new queens and kings of diy pop, and is therefore utterly recommended if you love frankie cosmos, waxahatchee and alex g. “It’s no longer just the naked sounds of Tividad and Tucker’s bass and guitar. There are little bursts of distortion, sweet guitar solos, chewy bass riffs, and quite a bit of echo...Here, they’ve raised the volume of their voices to a bellow rather than a whisper, making the songs all the more anthemic. Girlpool’s music has always seemed like an opportunity to peek into Tividad and Tucker’s private universe...they open the door—inviting us in like they haven’t before.” best new music - pitchfork
