Montreal's Caila Thompson-Hannant delights in making glittering, celebratory pop with an underlying strain of brittle, claustrophobic energy.
By marrying the accessible with the decidedly off-kilter, she displays a similar vigour & charisma to female contemporaries Grimes & tUnE-yArDs, both of whom too learned their trade among the same fertile hometown scene as her. This new set presents a sense-confounding vision of angular 21st century pop. Eponymous EP opener, ‘Mozart’s Sister’, updates the luxurious 80’s sound of Cindy Lauper & Kylie Minogue with trance haunted digital expanses. ‘Don’t Leave It To Me’ pits bubbly synths & belting vocals against a spectral undercurrent, all the while etching itself into the mind with cunningly infectious melody. Elsewhere, ‘Contentedness’ sees chugging bass & sparkling guitars fade into a wistful metropolitan hymn, while EP closer ‘Single Status’ is simultaneously manically exuberant & poignantly piercing, deftly articulating an ambiguous hyper-emotional landscape.
