Ballet Of Apes
castle face records
wafting through our speakers like the heat haze shimmering above the the deserts of california's dusty plains, brigid dawson's commanding ballads melt american roots music into sludgy, yet punchy, misty-eyed hallucinations.
Lovely though it may seem from a distance, the striation of loss quicksilvered throughout provides weighty balance to her contralto lilt. Those familiar with her harmonic counterpoint from her time in Thee Oh Sees/OCS know she can belt as well as lullaby but there’s a fresh and smoulderingly heavy swing in her step on display here that we mightily dig. The record features friends from eddy current, sic alps, the fresh & onlys, sunwatchers &, naturally, oh sees. the results are spellbinding. This is thrillingly potent stuff. “A transcendent, jazz-inspired masterpiece from the former Oh Sees member” 4.5/5 – uncut.
Polly says: “This has been my escape record during lockdown. An incredibly powerful, beautiful & timeless full-length solo record, which Brigid has really delivered on. The more I listen to it the more I fall in love with it.”
