Leaving their post-dubstep tones far behind, this is MK’s desert rock album - This sprawling work encompasses kosmische synthesis, sparkling timbre drops, rushing dream pop, and expands their horizons as far as the eye can see.

Written in the Yucca Valley, the environment that birthed these songs is palpable in their expansive, floating production, baked under the desert sun. Earthy guitar distortions blaze against shimmering synths and hazy vocals, creating a mesmerising space for our brains to sweat in for 37 minutes. A sonic sauna to detoxify the day’s poisons.

Since pioneering the post-dubstep movement of the early 2010s, Mount Kimbie’s sound has become less rooted in sub-genre categorisation, and more recognisable for its minimalist textures and juxtapositions between cold dissonance and mellifluous hooks. ‘The Sunset Violent’ is the apotheosis of the Mount Kimbie “sound”.

This record has endowed us with so much joy over the year, frequently to previously uninitiated ears. Its dreamy qualities offer an effortless transition into the early morning’s waking hours, whilst the dulcet melodies and spacious soundscapes have awaited us when we’re unwinding at day’s end. An album evoking colossal skies, radiant breezes and nature’s inherent rhythms.

Our Ewan says: "Mount Kimbie have consistently been one of my favourite bands and they are back on fine form with this record. I have revisited this album so many times over the year (much to the annoyance of everyone in the office) and love it more and more on every listen. Steering away from their electronic roots but still creating something that is quintessentially them is no fine feat. It somehow feels fresh but comforting at the same time."
