Fela Kuti

Koola Lobitos 64-68 / The '69 Los Angeles Sessions

Knitting Factory

Released: 4th Mar 2013

these classic recordings are among the earliest glimpses of fela anikulapo kuti's developing afrobeat sound.

recorded with his 1st band, koola lobitos, & with a distinct flavour of highlife & jazz in the mix (that would later be all but eclipsed by the jazz-funk influence), 'my lady frustration' sounds so much like james brown, you'd swear it was jimmy nolen playing guitar & clyde stubblefield on the drums, while tracks like 'nigeria' show how important radical politics were in informing his sound.
