Cindy Lee
Diamond Jubilee
W.25TH
An epic of sixties heartbroken pop colliding with fuzzed-out vintage psych on a spine of spindly funk - It’s rock and roll’s alternate timeline where hazy vulnerability and a knack for open-heart poetry kicked machismo right off the roost.
And did we mention that this 2-hour opus is absolutely heaving with sultry hooks that’ll keep you locked in for the duration? That and you only need to go 5 songs deep to hear our Jon's song of 2024.
On her fourth under the Cindy Lee moniker, the former Women guitarist's expansive project has never sounded so diverse, so inventive or so incisive. Despite it's enormous and sprawling tracklist, 'Diamond Jubilee' sounds focussed and considered at every twist and turn. Universally lauded earlier this year (including 9.1 from Pitchfork, who called it "an essential trove of music"), this is the first time that this album will be available physically, and half the staff here have already put their name down for a copy.
Big, big tip for fans of everyone from Ariel Pink to The Ronettes.
