It can’t have been easy following up ‘Boys & Girls’, one of the most successful debut albums of recent years and easily one of our favourites here, but Alabama Shakes have met the challenge marvellously, expanding on the garage-soul template with a rich and spacious production that takes in psychedelic funk, homages to Curtis Mayfield and Strokes-esque swagger.

The emphasis may be a little less on Brittany Howard’s staggering vocals this time around, but that just gives the rest of the band more room to impress on an album that brims with warmth and rhythmic potency. “adventurous second set from garage-soul sensations” 8/10 – uncut, “it’s hard not to be infected by the excitement” – the guardian, “one of the most muscular collections in some time” 4/5 – billboard, “The biggest hurdle facing Alabama Shakes on album number three? Bettering this one” 8/10 – nme.
