Mary Epworth
elytral
Sunday best
from a gloomy, dank and barren sonic space, Epworth issues forth infectious electro pop tunes that undergo alchemical transmutations by way of a dynamic range of off-kilter genre tangents, stabilised by her crystalline vocal performance.
'Elytral' sees Mary arriving with greater ferocity and a letting loose of her darker instincts through grinding, splintered soundscapes, electronic experimentalism, prog, psychedelia, free-jazz and more. vocally, her delivery is very similar to that of bat for lashes’ Natasha khan, whilst her musical territories overlap with the chilly pop hooks of goldfrapp, the eccentricity of st Vincent, and the sensitivity of jane weaver and Julia holter. “big, brave and laudably odd it is, then” 4/5 – mojo.
