knox’s 4th is an intoxicating piano album of nocturnal, cracked sophistication, that delivers the baritone croons and swelling strings of scott walker with a crooked, scathing energy.

Upon discovery that most hotels in downtown Chicago have a dilapidated old piano tucked away somewhere, Knox began to teach himself. Hearing him play, it’s apparent that he wasn’t taught traditionally but possesses a gift; he hops wildly around the keys and makes his own way. These are songs rooted in tradition, stories of true love and loss. In terms of singing, daniel cites Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich as key influences, alongside Ryuichi Sakamoto, Roberta Flack, Scott Walker, Randy Newman and Moondog. both Jarvis Cocker and Nina Nastasia feature as guest vocalists and truly elevate their given songs. “deliciously sour vignettes from Chicago singer-pianist” 8/10 – uncut.
