a trenchant debut offering that satiates but leaves you hungry for more.
Hopefully much more, very soon! this acerbic ep from the irish post-punk band m(h)aol was instantly engaging & instantly on our radar! we knew we should get it in as many ears as possible.
‘gender studies’ comes to us via the recently formed indie label tulle (who also brought us the incredible fears album), which champions under-represented voices in music. it marries urgent lyrics with a charged take on the post-punk sound & rhythms that drive the energy in unexpected directions. on the ep, lead vocalist róisín says, “’gender studies’ weaves past & present in an exploration of how the construct of gender shapes our lives. from feeling like you're not performing your gender right to the way it shapes how we move through the physical, sexual & romantic sphere.”
“the urgency of m(h)aol’s message threatens to become a violent maelstrom of heightened pace and pitch. this isn’t pop music – it’s power and politics. urgent and terrifyingly prescient” - louder than war
“the dublin post-punk outfit are pushing forward in this fight for justice and deserve to be heard, their message ringing out loud and clear” - so young
