On The Water
baltimore trio build a stunning & refreshingly honest lp of slow-burners with submerged beats & artful synths.
future islands’ romantic synth sound scales new heights with ‘on the water’. built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, & memory the band continue to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, & undeniable hooks - but finding new ways to probe inner space & tug at hearts. Sam Herring's vocals, which have been likened to everyone from David Bowie to Meat Loaf to the Sea Captain on The Simpsons, remain the centre of attention & although they're softer & less unhinged here, they still carry the forceful weight of loss & reflection. they fleshed out their sound with the additions of cello, violin, marimba, & field recordings & roped in a couple of guest appearances from denny bowen (double dagger, dan deacon) & jenn wasner (wye oak). ‘on the water’ is an addictive ride that demands repeat listens (which are unavoidable as you’ll find yourself getting drawn back to this one again & again). Highly recommended.
