Warpaint
The Fool - Deluxe
Rough Trade
warpaint celebrate an amazing year by releasing a deluxe version of their debut album.
their focused-at-being-unfocused sound is a curious mish-mash of styles including hints of psychedelia, prog, grunge & droning post punk. opener ‘set your arms down’ is a case in point, mixing urgent, uneasy drumming & choppy guitars with haunting, shimmering lustful angst. another highlight is ‘undertow’, a surprisingly sprightly retooling of classic 4ad shoegazers like red house painters & cocteau twins, while ‘baby’ reneges on the reverb & allows singer emily kokal an acoustic torch song. an amazingly immersive & varied set & a most impressive debut album. “it’s our good fortune that such a unique band exists to cut through the artifice of namedropping & cribbed influences” 9/10 – nme
