A Je

Released: 28th Jul 2017

burning with the intensity of a thousand swayzes, their 3rd album’s concoction of afro-nordic jazz is a breath of fresh air that’s as thrilling a listen as it is technically impressive.

their minimalist global groove is chic as ever & well ahead of the curve. Their compositional approach draws on Hope Masike's Zimbabwean & Calu Tsemane's Mozambican musical heritage alongside the rest of the band's Nordic jazz tilt. Hallvard remarks on his earliest encounters with the music of Mozambique: “the music felt like a wheel, spinning, without beginning or end”. Opening track “Loko U Muka” really catches this sentiment with rippling cyclical mbira & banjo lines atop interlocking bass line & Calu's vocal. All of the tracks here feature Norwegian jazz improviser Kim Johannesen's banjo & were written with the instrument's idiosyncratic sound & flailing playing style in mind.
