resident was opened in 2004 by myself, Natasha Youngs & my wonderul hubbie, Derry Watkins, as we really wanted to give our hometown the kind of record shop we felt it deserved after years of working for the soulless chains. Resident has since become a well established & essential part of Brighton's vibrant music scene because we pour our heart, soul & pretty much every waking hour into it.

Run by an ever expanding bunch of friendly, welcoming & passionate music lovers / geeks, we provide a massive choice of new releases across all genres, an extensive, quality back catalogue & heaps of  bargains. We often have limited editions, free bonus discs & indie exclusives. We sell tickets for all the local venues (in the shop or by phone only - not online unfortunately). We also host instores, provide a great weekly mailout & offer musical guidance & cheery smiles.

Essentially, we are everything you’d want your local indie to be......& now we can come to your home too (well, we can send parcels of sweet sweet music to your home at least)!

2011 saw Resident receive 2 awards in recognition of our hard work & being generally ace! Firstly we were voted "England's Favourite Indie Record Shop" in a poll taken by www.indierecordshop.org in conjunction with Record Store Day 2011. As this was voted for by our awesome customers, this is an accolade we are very proud of indeed. Then, we won the much coveted Music Week Award for "Indie Record Shop of the Year" - posh clothes were worn, a snazzy ceremony was attended & a shiny award was handed over - Yay!
