nomadic, goth-americana, cult songwriter delivers album number 6-&-a-half & it’s one of his most rocking & accessible to date.

as time goes on mccombs seems to be embracing melancholy more & more whole heartedly with each album but here he displays a sardonic edge that has grown with time & experience. there are plenty of the waltzy songs that have become his trademark, but the album is also augmented with chugging rockers that put him firmly up there with bill callahan & bonnie ‘prince’ billy when they let rip & shed their dark baggage. “love thine enemy’ reprises that velvets-y two-chord throb while paraphrasing tim rose’s fatalistic folk-blues ‘morning dew’, & ‘the living word’ taps mccombs’ big star ‘sister lovers/third’ album gene, deadpan but not masking the pain.” – bbc.
