EVERYONE WAS A BIRD
local heroes refine unique brand of ancient modernity - the album travels seamlessly from imprisonment to ultimate release, taking in Jersey, Wales and the good old sussex downs along the way.
The third album by Andrew Phillips and Marcus O’Dair continues to explore an obsession with a very English sense of time and place, but this time around there are bigger tunes, more strings, greater dramas and longer journeys. While the duo's melancholy, pensive sound recalls tunng, midlake, the undervalued Ultramarine and Robert Wyatt - for whom O'dair penned the authorised biography - there are further literary clues from author Robert Macfarlane's liner notes and the title's pinch from 1st world war poet siegfried sassoon. "winsome, pastoral electronic vignettes that loop and swoop... compelling throughout" 4/5 - mojo.
