Charming and timely, albarn’s brassy pop sojourn comes off as a solemnly elegiac maturation of his ‘modern life is rubbish’ rant of 25 years ago.

In between time, it was 2007 when this supergroup assembled, comprised of Albarn, The Clash’s Paul Simonon, The Verve’s Simon Tong and Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. Though this is mournful album, full of goodbyes and yesterdays, there is a jaunty, gallows sort-of hope to these songs, full of musical flourish and English wit. In that sense it feels an incredibly apt state-of-the-nation piece, something that could only have been made now, by these artists, with their distinct musical histories. recommended for blur, pulp, and last shadow puppets lovers. “Damon dons the black top hat and strides back through the pea-soupers, to deliver a stunning national elegy in hobbled waltz time.” – the guardian
