ABOUT

A truly independent record shop nestled in the bustling heart of Brighton’s vibrant North Laine.

From a humble naissance in 2004, to an ever-broadening and evolving multi-award winning (oh yes!) hub of the community 21 years later, we’ve grown enormously but not beyond recognition, as we constantly strive to retain the same sense of intimacy, personal service and homegrown culture that an indie should always bring to the high street.

We are a friendly and knowledgeable team who share our obsession for new and classic music through:

  • A lovingly curated and extensive range of catalogue (across vinyl, CD and books).
  • The widest selection of preorders we know of.
  • An enormous volume and variety of intimate and exciting artist events.
  • A spacious, accessible, thoughtfully-designed and diligently looked after physical shop.
  • Passionate and approachable customer service.
  • Countless exclusives, signed formats, special releases and bonus editions.
  • A meticulous and efficient mail order operation, that ships worldwide.

Our team spans multiple generations, represents myriad musical tastes and is comprised of folks of all preferences and persuasions, so all will feel welcome here!

We’ve experienced countless learning curves and evolutions, shop expansions, power cuts and roof downpours, but what will never change is our pride in what we do and our desire to remain an inviting place of warmth, chat, humility, laughter, discovery and ultimately, sweet sweet music…and also books.

  • I'm Nat(asha). I like to be surrounded by good people & good sounds, so I’m winning here. Slowly unmaturing with age.

    Hi there!
    Nat
  • I'm Dan, shopfloor manager at Resident. Obscure music is my forte. Occasional DJ and avid traveller of the globe.

    Hi there!
    Dan
  • Hi, I'm Georgie...

    Hi there!
    Georgie
  • Word wrangler. If I'm not up the Downs, I'm probably frantically scribbling in a notebook.

    Hi there!
    Jon
  • Little excites me as much as a new power tool; enabling me to create works of real genius. Also, Surfer Rosa is unequalled.

    Hi there!
    Jules
  • Hey, Hanna here, whilst you’re spending your time reading this I might just be at a gig or wandering around the Downs!

    Hi there!
    Hanna
  • I’ve spent the vast majority of my adult life in record shops, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

    Hi there!
    Rupert
  • I’m Juliet, I help keep the office running smoothly. I'm also one third of the mailorder team and starter of two small microwave fires.

    Hi there!
    Juliet
  • Work. Gig. Match. Film. Repeat.

    Hi there!
    Derry
  • I’m Des, you’ll have heard my laugh at some point in Brighton and have definitely seen me at a show.

    Hi there!
    Des
  • Hi! I’m Ian and I’ve been part of the counter crew for a while now. I’m a big fan of Sonic Youth & hats.

    Hi there!
    Ian
  • When not posing with records in the shop, I'm a guitarist in local punk band Harker who digs books, art, food & football

    Hi there!
    Louis
  • I'm Jack - I can usually be found on the shopfloor, keeping the sleeves in order or recommending some of my favourites.

    Hi there!
    Jack
  • Heyy! I'm Mali (aka Mrs Worldwide). When I'm not being a 365-day party girl, I'm down with the Radio 6 dads.

    Hi there!
    Mali
  • I'm Matt, not Jon. Jon is the small one who does books and has a beard, I'm the big one who does books and has a beard.

    Hi there!
    Matt
  • Hi I’m Austin! Mailorder worshipper, serial packer, and aux hogger of the office

    Hi there!
    Austin
  • Hi I’m Ewan. You might have seen me rushing about at instores. When I’m not doing that, I’m at the cinema, or finding horrible remixes for DJ sets.

    Hi there!
    Ewan
  • Frenetic mailorder team member, part time urban shepherd.

    Hi there!
    Jacky
  • Hi! I'm Patrick, or Paddy. When not between the racks here, I can be found up at Uni studying, prowling the Lanes for clothes, or in the pub with my pals.

    Hi there!
    Patrick
  • Hi I’m Phoebe! You’ve probably seen my name before because I answer all your emails, but now you can see my face too! Isn’t technology just magic.

    Hi there!
    Phoebe
  • I’m Resident’s Northern correspondent, soaking up the Manchester music scene and scribing our mailouts from afar – a pen pal, if you will.

    Hi there!
    Ferg
  • I’m Will, oh look! Another guy at Resident with a beard and a hat, who’d have thought it.

    Hi there!
    Will
  • I'm a music loving retired banker, now living the dream as Resident’s part-time bookkeeper.

    Hi there!
    Kevin
  • I do a bit of everything. Sort signed books, spreadsheets and web dev. Currently listening to Big Thief, probably.

    Hi there!
    James
  • Booking and running events is the name of my game and when I'm not doing that, you’ll likely find me playing in a band.

    Hi there!
    Georgia
