this comp documents the oft-overlooked genre that connected the large swing bands of 40s wartime with the development of Rhythm & Blues: the precursor to Rock & Roll.

It was loud, up-tempo music with the one primary aim of getting the audiences dancing. These forty tracks are a fascinating cross section of what was happening in one part of American society during the popularity of ‘Jump Blues’. We can hear the blues and swing band roots, and hear how the music was essentially anticipating rock and roll and other later forms of dance music, and appreciate why this era of music is now drawing so much attentionfor its influence on what has happened since. It is rich, varied and exciting, and we would all be poorer without it.
