Melanie De Biasio
Play It Again Sam
‘No Deal’ may be minimalist but the semi-improvised record is a rich, rewarding, deeply immersive listen that finds its power through subtle splendour.
Originally from Charleroi & currently based in Brussels, De Biasio is a classically trained flautist & the possessor of an extraordinary voice - she has been called the Belgian Billie Holiday. The album should appeal to fans of late-period Talk Talk, whose Mark Hollis is a huge figure for De Biasio. She also cites Frank Zappa & Pink Floyd as formative influences, plus Nina Simone & Abbey Lincoln, two icons of the civil rights fight and spokeswomen of an aggressive jazz stripped of any affectation. a real slow burner but a beautifully mesmerising one that needs time to show all its colours. the last track alone is reason enough to buy this record.
