Released: 15th Jun 2018

their full-length debut is a deeply evocative series of jazz workouts loosely based upon written compositions that overwhelmingly succeed in capturing the frenetic energy & grime of new York city; this would be the perfect alternate soundtrack to ‘taxi driver’.

Whereas previous Onyx Collective projects recreate New York City's more romantic facets, this has a much more ominous sound, reflective of the dissonance that accompanies life in the city. “When I wrote the record I was thinking about concepts like eviction & gentrification,” explains saxophonist Isaiah Barr. While this music is more premeditated than the impromptu nature of their previous work, New York's deafening influence remains present. fans of binker & moses, shabaka & the ancestors & ezra collective need to hear this. "deeply rewarding in its explorations of jazz history and the ways in which Barr and his collective update and skew the emotive core of such tradition." - london in stereo
