we’ve had a fondness for chad’s previous output, but we’ve never really fallen in love with his work……until now that is. at last he emerges from his bunker in calgary with a batch of songs that are both enigmatic & ridiculously honest. after producing women’s amazing ‘public strain’, vangaalen decided to avoid the comfort of working on previous ground & instead apply some of the recording techniques & sonic ideas that emerged from those sessions to his own material. multi-tracked & often overdriven guitars are at the centre of each song which demonstrates his ability to write one hell of a riff & run with it. these songs are undoubtedly some of his best, excelling at restrained pavement/sonic youth arrangements with a more ethereal americana edge. highly recommended. “subtle character shifts & brave one-liners, all of which confirm vangaalen's status as gripping songwriter as well as a producer” – pitchfork.
