Several Shades of Why
the dinosaur jr frontman is best known for his roaring guitar solos, volume & for creating some of the era’s signature songs, albums & styles. this solo effort is somewhat of a departure from his previous work as the tracks are made up almost entirely of acoustic songs that compliment his drawling vocals wonderfully, with accompaniment from the likes of kurt vile, sophie trudeau (a silver mount zion), kurt fedora, kevin drew (broken social scene) & ben bridwell (band of horses). the title track features some stunning picked guitar & delicate strings, while the doubled vocals, country-tinged lead guitar & flute on ‘make it right’ create a more laid back & retrospective ‘here comes the sun’. it may not be the mascis we are used to but his range of songwriting, whether it be english-tinged folk or west-coast american troubadour, is certainly a worthy beast. “a rather nifty set of bruised acoustic powerpop & smouldering folk-rock” 4/5 - uncut.
