'costa blanca' pushes the envelope of their signature franc-o-phonic sound; the coloeur café cool of gainsbourg, the hypnotic drone of ‘vu’-era cale & the spiky fuzz of davie allan.

this time around the band laces the tunes with a dramatic flair from french new wave soundtracks & the percussive sonic accents found in morricone’s work in il gruppo. while the main thrust is still a lively brand of french pop meets velvets garage rock, they add more acoustic guitars, stretch out the songs' running times, & generally retreat from short, punchy songs in the direction of ones that take their time to unwind & have more diffuse charms. other tracks explore new moods, too; the slowly chugging ‘votre coté yéyé m'emmerde’ has a lot of sinister menace, ‘la mélancolie’ has a lovely downcast strut that seems perfect for listening to while walking through late-night rain & ‘cold was the ground’ reaches a level of slow despair they hadn't delved into before.
