The trajectory of this band has been phenomenal to behold - They really do have the golden touch! In 2022, Jacob Slater’s (post-Dead Pretties) project released ‘Cub’, which popped up in various end of year lists but erroneously featured nowhere in ours - So we’re coming to the party pretty late, but we’re bringing the second wind energy, the best tunes and the whiskey to make up for it!.
The early noises we heard from ‘Midas’ made it impossible for us to resist the now-4-piece-band any further. Their raw power, brain-seizing anthems, intricate compositions and formidable stage presence has roused our attention and proven to be endlessly addictive. With rugged hooks, unfiltered noise and fierce melodic sensitivity, the most obvious touchpoints of this record are Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ and the surrounding early 90s Seattle sound. But ‘Midas’ rips up the pastiche grunge script of the many that have tried to capture that teen spirit and instead reads like a masterclass from the Elliott Smith school of songwriting, assuredly shifting from the guttural and innate to the delicate and eye-wellingly beautiful.
‘Midas’ establishes the band as an influential and important generational talent in their own right. We’re saddled up for a long ride.
