Dropping the six in favour of a Satellite, Chris Olley's latest incarnation finds him, fittingly, trawling channels of inner and outer space, zooming off into extended interplanetary wigouts, and returning with a truck full of brain-twisting aural psychedelia just perfect to lay back and sink deep into.
Chris Olley headed to the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales to record what he thought was going to be the next Six By Seven album but came away with an entirely different sound altogether along with a whole new band; Satellite Seven . The band is made up of Chris and Charlie (both from Six By Seven, Radio Bremen), Mark Refoy (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Slipstream) and Thighpaulsandra (COIL, Hawkwind, Julian Cope, Spiritualized). "Just based on the names involved with this record alone, and with Spiritualized being my favourite band of all time, this was a project I simply couldn’t turn down. The fact that they have concocted a gorgeous sounding, neo-krautrock album only made my decision to work with these guys and get this pressed onto vinyl even easier". - Adam, Drone Rock Records
As Chris explains the process better himself… “Guitar maestro Mark Refoy joined me and Charlie and Thighpaulsandra for a weekend of recording. In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have imagined what we came up with in such a short period of time. Mark is an amazing guitarist, with a distinctive melodic style which sits somewhere between Johnny Marr and Michael Rother. His guitar work on the first two Spiritualized albums is what makes them such awesome records. Thighpaulsandra added great sounds playing an Echoplex live along with synths. He also engineered and recorded the album in the same room that Bohemian Rhapsody was recorded. As usual, Charlies drumming was sublime and on the money, right from the start. When we made the record we were trying to make a sound that bands like Amon Düll and NEU! would be creating today, rather than just copying the old masters styles and beats.”
