In his first new work since his incredible ‘sleep’ project, the neo-classical master presents music drawn from his score for wayne mcgregor’s award-winning ballet production, inspired by the writing of Virginia woolf.

The album adopts a triptych structure, beginning with an excerpt of woolf talking about language, memories, and echoes of the past, and commencing with graceful compositions typical of richter’s most moving pieces. There’s something about the confluence of woolfian themes and these beautiful piano and violin-led melodies that makes this album particularly profound and relatable, rooted in some deep collective poetry. There are not enough tissues in your home to cover the weep-inducing gravity of this gorgeous music.

Helen recommends: “a triplicate of wonder, beauty & pain - you don't have to be familiar with virginia woolf to appreciate the graceful narrative that lies within each of her three 'worlds'”

Max Richter has crafted something that feels like a timeless nod to the past, and yet an inventive ode to Woolf’s modernism. He has followed up the exceptional ‘Sleep’ with yet another dazzling work that is “full of echoes, of memories, of associations” that celebrate and reflect this towering writer.” 9/10 – drowned in sound
