Explosive and full of energy, kokoko capture the same infectious and riotous mix of punk spirit and afrobeat that made fellow kinhasa band mbongwana star so brilliant.
While mbongwana star took their sound into post punk, kokoko keep things ticking with strong grooves and dancefloor ready beats that recall konono no.1 and baloji. It’s a chaotic listen, with the band sounding like they’re tearing apart at the seams at times (which comes with the territory when the instruments are often recycled materials), but that’s what makes this record so special. “A multilayered sound more compelling in its rawness than anything else you'll hear this year” – 5/5, the arts desk
