Whilst 2017’s eagerly awaited return brought the shoegaze titans back into view, it’s this follow up which elevates them up to the stratospheric heights they so deserve to inhabit.
Combining all of the elements that made them resonate so acutely during that initial, fertile 90s wash, this builds on and expands the sprawling epic soundscapes into sublime hymns for good with a sturdy sense of humanity at the heart of it.
”This isn’t summer music; this is sunset music, attuned to and aware of fading glories.” - Pitchfork
It’s as if the band have spent the 6 years since their self-titled record plugging back into the soulful core that gave ‘Just For a Day’ and ‘Souvlaki’ their strong connection and immediacy. It’s more than floaty atmospherics, booming reverb, and ethereal vox. It’s a direct pipeline into a nation’s neuroses, into collective mourning, and into overwhelming sadness.
But ‘Everything Is Alive’ is the balm for all of this. Through it, us mere mortal listeners can find solace, hope, and serenity blooming from within the soaring chords and driving bass lines, patching us up and gifting us the courage to return to our feet and face this damned world yet again.
Suffice to say, this second wave of Slowdive is proving to be equally as awe-inspiring and breathtaking as when they hit first time round. Lean back and let the shimmering undulations rear up and break against your soul.
